Der Sammelband vereinigt Beitr?ge der gleichnamigen Tagung, die im Oktober 2018 unter Beteiligung von Historikern aus drei Kontinenten an der Freien Universit?t Berlin stattfand. Sie behandeln die Auswirkungen des Ersten Weltkriegs, der den Zusammenbruch der Kaiserreiche und des Sultanats zeitigte, den besiegten Staaten das Ende des Feudalstaats brachte und das Geschick ihrer V?lker in die H?nde eines seit langem erstarkten B?rgertums oder wenigstens einer am westlichen Vorbild orientierten Gesellschaftsschicht legte. Den Aufbruch in die Moderne hatte die russische Oktoberrevolution vorweggenommen, die Siegern und Besiegten eine alternative Gesellschaftsordnung entgegenstellte. Die Konkurrenz der Gesellschaftsordnungen bestimmte, bald hei?, bald kalt, das 20. Jahrhundert, und zeitigte den Aufstieg der USA zur wirtschaftlich ?berlegenen Weltmacht. Am Ende des Jahrhunderts ist das sozialistische Lager untergegangen und das kapitalistische befindet sich in einer Krise, die nicht nur das eigene ?berdauern, sondern durch die zunehmende Wahrscheinlichkeit kriegerischer Auseinandersetzungen und das Damoklesschwert des Klimawandels die Fortexistenz der Menschheit in Frage stellt. Der Aufbruch in die Moderne war mithin kein Erfolgsmodell, und sein Scheitern setzt die Frage nach einer Alternative mit anhaltender Dringlichkeit auf die Tagesordnung.

This volume offers an interdisciplinary approach to some pivotal topics of (de-) colonization. It examines the early modern debate on just war, transatlantic conquest and slavery, followed by the shift of the debate in the 18th and 19th centuries towards assertions of racial hierarchies based on supposed matters of fact, and finally the philosophical discussion regarding decolonization. Two central themes emerge: first, the political circumstances and the exploitation of the available terminology resulted in the production of new meanings or "translations" during the 17th and 18th centuries, and second, the adoptions of established justifications of colonial activities and enslavement brought about models of natural science that increasingly developed a momentum of their own.
Neither instruments nor methodologies are available to measure the development of CoI over long periods of time. Therefore, it is impossible to state whether CoI increase or decrease. The Member States of the EU have no statistics and figures about the development of Conflicts of Interest (CoI). However, ever new scandals, growing media attention and changing concepts of governance create ever new ethical challenges and conflicts of interest. As such, detecting, managing and measuring CoI policies involve some of the greatest challenges and difficulties in legal, political, organizational, behavioural and administrative sciences. This international and empirical research examines the causes of conflicts of interest and discusses concepts, innovative instruments and new ideas how to enhance the effectiveness of policies.

On the occasion of its 50th anniversary, a symposium honoring Johann Wolfgang von Goethe was organized and held on April 22, 2016, at the University of Dallas. This Festschrift is the published proceedings of the symposium along with a review of the Goethe Center’s history and the development of its mission from its founding to the present. The concept of the Festschrift is focused on the persona of Goethe and his modern-day relevance as a representative of German culture and Bildung. The chapters included in this volume revolve around Goethe’s uniqueness as a thinker, scientist, and artist. This volume seeks to draw attention to Goethe’s role as cultural representative by highlighting his double function as mediator between both tradition and innovation by virtue of his intellectual idiosyncrasy. English verbs of speaking have been affected by profound and intriguing changes, in particular between Old and Middle English. These changes crucially involve the loss of the verb cwe?an and its replacement by say, which remains the most common verb of speaking to this day. The present study provides an exhaustive corpus-based, cross-period, and multi-dimensional appraisal of verbs of speaking used as part of the linguistic expression of communication in the history of English situated within a frame-semantic and constructionist framework. Moreover, it elucidates the fascinating changes affecting the verbs used to talk about communication between Old and Middle English. Also, this study sheds light on the functions of medially placed reporting clauses emerging in the Middle English period.
