Описание: This multidisciplinary work analyses challenges to sustainable development amidst rapidly changing climate in the world’s largest delta – the Sundarbans. Empirical evidence unpacks grounded vulnerabilities and reveals their temporal socio-economic impacts. A novel concept of ‘everyday disasters’ is proposed – supported by data and photographic evidence – that contests institutional disaster definition. Then it uncovers how the geopolitics of ecological governance and its hegemonic discourse dominate local policies, which in turn fail to address local socio-ecological concerns, adaptation needs and development aspirations. Absence of local vocabularies, cognitive values and socio-cultural contexts along with spatially constricted, exclusionary, top-down techno-science approaches further escalate knowledge-action gaps. Deconstruction of multiscalar conflicts between the global rhetoric and transformative postcolonial geographies offers an ethical, Southern perspective of sustainability.

Описание: Understanding the balance of society and nature is imperative when researching ecosystems and their global influence. A method of studying the health of these ecosystems is biodiversity. The more diverse the species that live in an ecosystem, the healthier it is. As the climate continues to transform, small-scale ecosystems are affected, altering their diversity. Environmentalists need a book of research that studies the specific impacts of climate change and how it affects the future of the environment. Current State and Future Impacts of Climate Change on Biodiversity is a pivotal reference source that provides vital research on biological systems and how climate change influences their health. While highlighting topics such as genetic diversity, economic valuation, and climatic conditions, this publication explores the effects of climate change as well as the methods of sustainable management within ecosystems. This book is ideally designed for environmental scientists, environmental professionals, scientists, ecologists, conservationists, government officials, policymakers, agriculturalists, environmentalists, zoologists, botanists, entomologists, urban planners, researchers, scholars, and students seeking research on current and future developments of various ecosystems.

Advancing Climate Change Research in West Africa: Trends, Impacts, Vulnerability, Resilience, Adaptation and Sustainability Issues

Описание: Over the past few decades, agriculture and related sectors in West Africa have been challenged by climate change, which has become one of the most important developmental issues in the region. Whereas negative environmental and socio-economic impacts have been extensively documented in West Africa, future climate projections suggest that the situation will only get worse if relevant actions are not taken. Indeed, most of the West African countries remain characterized by a limited use of production technologies and information, and local economies heavily rely on a rain-fed agriculture.Despite the increasing number of studies focusing on climate change related issues, the methodological (i.e., conceptual and analytical) approaches seem to become stagnant with mixed practical results in terms of mitigation and adaptation outcomes. Against this backdrop, the forthcoming book is aimed at showcasing innovative and promising approaches that can be used to advance our current knowledge of climate change trends, impacts, vulnerability, resilience and adaptation in West Africa. With the focus on agriculture and environment, the book compiles the latest developments in climate change research in West Africa by providing an overview of recent approaches used to better understand the vulnerability, resilience and adaptation to climate change. It also considers the methods and frameworks for assessing the sustainability of climate change adaptation.
