How can the simple choice of a men's suit be a moral statement and a political act? When the suit is made of free-labor wool rather than slave-grown cotton. In Moral Commerce, Julie L. Holcomb traces the genealogy of the boycott of slave labor from its seventeenth-century Quaker origins through its late nineteenth-century decline. In their failures and in their successes, in their resilience and their persistence, antislavery consumers help us understand the possibilities and the limitations of moral commerce.
Quaker antislavery rhetoric began with protests against the slave trade before expanding to include boycotts of the use and products of slave labor. For more than one hundred years, British and American abolitionists highlighted consumers' complicity in sustaining slavery. The boycott of slave labor was the first consumer movement to transcend the boundaries of nation, gender, and race in an effort by reformers to change the conditions of production. The movement attracted a broad cross-section of abolitionists: conservative and radical, Quaker and non-Quaker, male and female, white and black.
The men and women who boycotted slave labor created diverse, biracial networks that worked to reorganize the transatlantic economy on an ethical basis. Even when they acted locally, supporters embraced a global vision, mobilizing the boycott as a powerful force that could transform the marketplace. For supporters of the boycott, the abolition of slavery was a step toward a broader goal of a just and humane economy. The boycott failed to overcome the power structures that kept slave labor in place; nonetheless, the movement's historic successes and failures have important implications for modern consumers.

Описание: In this book Jukka Korpela offers an analysis of the trade in kidnapped Finns and Karelians into slavery in Eastern Europe. Blond slaves from the north of Europe were rare luxury items in Black Sea and Caspian markets, and the high prices they commanded stimulated and sustained a long-distance trade based on kidnapping in special robbery missions and war expeditions. Captives were sold into the Volga slave trade and transported through market webs further south. This business differed and was separate from the large-scale raids carried out on Crimeans for enslavement in Eastern Europe, or the mass kidnappings characteristic of Mediterranean slavery. The trade in Finns and Karelians provides new perspectives on the formation of the Russian state as well as the economic networks of official and unofficial markets in Eastern Europe.

Don Quixote was the first novel ever to gain a virtually immediate international reception: within a year of its publication in 1605 it was being read in multiple countries on two continents. Shortly after that, translations, plays, and works of fiction adapting, or re-accentuating, the character were published and staged throughout Europe. Cervantes's novel has thus generated perhaps the most interesting and varied history of reception, interpretation, and re-accentuation of any work of literature ever written. The character of Don Quixote is undoubtedly the most easily recognized literary character ever created. He is, as we have previously written, the greatest literary hero of all time. We offer here a dozen essays on the perception and interpretation of Don Quixote around the world by an international group of outstanding scholars. -From the introduction.

Описание: Slaves and Slave Agency in the Ottoman Empire offers a new contribution to slavery studies relating to the Ottoman Empire. Given the fact that the classical binary of slavery and freedom derives from the transatlantic experience, this volume presents an alternative approach, by examining the strongly asymmetric relationships of dependency documented in the Ottoman Empire. A closer look at the Ottoman social order discloses manifold and ambiguous conditions involving enslavement practices, rather than a single universal pattern. The authors of this volume examine various forms of enslavement and dependency with a particular focus on agency, i.e., the room for maneuver, which the enslaved could secure for themselves, or else the available options for action in situations of extreme individual or group dependencies. Case studies reveal a very wide spectrum of agency, especially with regard to domestic slaves. The authors discuss a multitude of questions, including the uses of legal documents. Others explore the particular situations of eunuchs, galley slaves, slave traders, enslaved populations, manumitted slaves at the palace and in ordinary households, war captives returned home, and domestic servants after the abolition of slavery. This volume presents a clearer and more nuanced picture of the practices of slavery and asymmetric dependency that evolved across the duration of the Ottoman Empire.
