Описание: Romeo and Juliet always use thou to each other, but they are the only pair of lovers in Shakespeare to do this. Why? All the women in Richard III address Richard as thou, but no man ever does. Why? When characters address the dead, they use thou - except for Hamlet, who addresses Yorick as you. Why? Shakespeares contemporaries would have known the answers to these questions because they understood what thou signified, but modern actors and audiences are in the dark. Through performance-oriented analysis of extracts from the plays, this book explores the language of trulls and termagants, true loves and unwelcome wooers, male impersonators, smothering mothers, warring spouses and fighting men, as well as investigating lиse-majestй, Freudian slips, crisis moments and rhetorical flourishes. Drawing on work with RSC actors, as well as the authors experience of playing a range of Shakespearean roles, the book equips the reader with a new tool for tracking emotions, weighing power relations and appreciating dazzling complexity.

Описание: Cracking Shakespeare serves to demystify the process of speaking Shakespeare’s language, offering hands-on techniques for drama students, young actors and directors who are intimidated by rehearsing, performing and directing Shakespeare’s plays. For some artists approaching Shakespeare, the ability to capture the dynamic movement of thought from mind to mouth, and the paradox of using the formality of verse to express a realistic form of speech, can seem daunting. Cracking Shakespeare includes practical techniques and exercises to solve this dilemma – including supporting online video which demonstrate how to embody Shakespeare’s characters in rehearsal and performance – offering a toolkit that will free actors and directors from their fear of Shakespeare. The result of thirty years of acting, teaching and directing Shakespeare, Kelly Hunter’s Cracking Shakespeare is the ideal textbook for actors and directors looking for new ways to approach Shakespeare’s plays in a hands-on, down-to-earth style.

Описание: The National Theatre's years at the Old Vic were the most Shakespearean period in its history, beginning in 1963 with Laurence Olivier's inaugural production of Hamlet, starring Peter O'Toole, and ending in 1975 with Peter Hall's production of the same play led by Albert Finney. Between them lay performances that included Olivier's then-legendary, now deeply controversial, Othello, a celebrated all-male As You Like It, the visit of the Berliner Ensemble with Brecht's version of Coriolanus, Franco Zeffirelli's festive Much Ado about Nothing, and Tom Stoppard's classic offshoot, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead.

Drawing upon a wealth of previously unseen material from the company archives, this book tells the inside story of the National's relationship with Shakespeare, within a landscape of institutional struggle, political upheaval and cultural transformation. Between them, the productions illuminate Olivier's legacy as an actor, his and Hall's achievements as directors, the role of the National in the Shakespearean careers of, amongst others, John Gielgud, Anthony Hopkins, Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith and Billie Whitelaw, its pioneering accommodation of European theatre practitioners, and its distinctive ways of engaging Shakespeare with the Britain of the 1960s and 1970s.

Описание: Cheek by Jowl, founded by Declan Donnellan and Nick Ormerod in 1981, is one of the world’s most critically acclaimed classical theatre companies. Across seventeen productions of Shakespeare (as well as several by his contemporaries and other European dramatists), Cheek by Jowl’s experiments with text, space, light and bodies have produced bold reinventions of canonical and lesser-explored plays. Despite the pre-eminence of the company, its multiple awards and central place in the European repertory, this is the first substantive study of the company’s body of work. This book situates Cheek by Jowl’s work within the key institutions and traditions that have shaped the company’s development from low-budget beginnings at the Edinburgh Festival to international celebration, while also focusing specifically on the company’s use of Shakespeare to drive forward its practice. Drawing on the company’s work in English, Russian and French, the book uses key productions as case studies to interrogate the company’s unique style and build an argument for the distinctive insights offered by Cheek by Jowl’s approach. The book draws on new interviews with creative and administrative company members from the full span of Cheek by Jowl’s history as well as a full appraisal of the Cheek by Jowl archives, offering the first scholarly overview of the company’s work.

Описание:

The first in-depth exploration of Shakespeare's representations of climate and the sky

While ecocritical approaches to literary texts receive more and more attention, climate-related issues remain fairly neglected, particularly in the field of Shakespeare studies. This monograph explores the importance of weather and changing skies in early modern England while acknowledging the fact that traditional representations and religious beliefs still fashioned people's relations to meteorological phenomena. At the same time, a growing number of literati stood against determinism and defended free will, thereby insisting on the ability to act upon celestial forces. Sophie Chiari argues that Shakespeare reconciles the scholarly approaches of his time with popular views rooted in superstition and promotes a sensitive, pragmatic understanding of climatic events. Taking into account the influence of classical thought, each of the book's seven chapters addresses a different play where sky-related topics are crucial and considers the way climatic phenomena were presented on stage and how they came to shape the production and reception of Shakespeare's drama.

Key Features

  • Offers an all-encompassing approach on early modern climate in Shakespeare
  • Redefines the notion of 'climate' as Shakespeare's contemporaries understood it
  • Suggests new hermeneutic tracks to understand Shakespeare's major comedies and tragedies
  • Probes environmental issues in Shakespeare's plays and, in doing so, echoes major concerns of the present time
