Описание: Cecil Tyndale-Biscoe polarised opinion in early 20th India by his unconventional methods of educating Kashmiris and, through them, changing the social order of a society steeped in old superstitions. He was a man of contradictions: a Christian and a boxer, a missionary who made very few converts, a staunch supporter of British imperialism and a friend of Kashmir’s political reformers. He made enemies of the Hindu Establishment, who described him as ‘exceedingly a bad man and one too much fond of cricket,’ but earned the respect of two successive Hindu Maharajas, as well as the Muslim leader, who succeeded them. He was 27 when he became the Principal of the Church Missionary Society’s school in Kashmir in 1890 and he left as India gained independence in 1947. His vision was of a school in action, vigorously involved in the affairs and problems of the city of Srinagar, to support the weak and to fight corruption wherever it occurred. Under his leadership the masters and boys were engaged in fighting fires in the city, saving people from drowning, taking hospital patients for outings on the lakes, helping women and removing the ban on the remarriage of young widows. His avowed purpose was to make his students into honest, fearless leaders, who would serve their beloved country of Kashmir. The book begins with the medieval condition of Kashmir in the nineteenth century; describes the development of his unusual approach to education; explores the many challenges he had to overcome, including his chronic bad health, his difficulties with the CMS and the opposition of the Hindu establishment and State Government; and contrasts this with the speedy and enthusiastic acceptance by his young Kashmiri teachers and students of what he was offering and how together they transformed their society and prepared Kashmir for independence.

The Dictatorship of Sex explores the attempts to define and control sexual behavior in the years following the Russian Revolution. It is the first book to examine Soviet “sexual enlightenment, ” a program of popular health and lifestyle advice intended to establish a model of sexual conduct for the men and women who would build socialism.
Leftist social theorists and political activists had long envisioned an egalitarian utopia, and after 1917, the medical profession took the leading role in solving the sex question (while at the same time carving out a niche for itself among postrevolutionary social institutions). Frances Bernstein reveals the tension between the doctors advocacy for relatively liberal social policy and the generally proscriptive nature of their advice, as well as their lack of interest in questions of personal pleasure, fulfillment, and sexual expression. While supporting the goals of the Soviet state, the enlighteners appealed to ‘irrefutable biological truths that ultimately supported a very traditional gender regime. The Dictatorship of Sex offers a unique lens through which to contemplate a central conundrum of Russian history: the relationship between the supposedly ‘liberated 1920s and ‘repressive 1930s. Although most of the proponents of sexual enlightenment in the 1920s would suffer greatly during Stalin s purges, their writings facilitated the Stalinist approach to sexuality and the family. Bernstein s book will interest historians of Russia, gender, sexuality, and medicine, as well as anyone curious about social and ideological experiments in a revolutionary culture.

Описание: Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) flows started gaining traction in South Asia from the late 20th century onwards, when nations from the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) began moving away from highly controlled regimes and adopting liberal and open economic policies. In the context of surplus labour and capital scarcity faced by South Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, to varying degrees, the economic reform process has provided an opportunity to actively promote inward FDI flows, with the goal of providing the much-needed capital for the growth of this region. Several policy initiatives were undertaken to attract FDI and incentives were announced to fascinate investors, resulting in the inflow of FDI across the region. This book examines FDI inflows in SAARC nations in the light of regional policy changes in the 21st century. It investigates the relationship between trade and FDI in the region, and also provides insights into the ease of doing business in the SAARC region.

Описание: Excerpt from The Silence of the Maharajah Out in India at a certain English station which was generally admitted to be so cially fast, with that unique sort of fast ness peculiar to anglo-indian life, the leader of the most rapid set was a hand some, dashing woman, known to the irrev erent as Lolly, and to the more orthodox as Mrs. Claude Annesley. She was the wife of Colonel Claude Annesley, of course, but this fact had to be strongly borne in upon the minds of those who were not thoroughly well acquainted with her, be cause at first sight she did not appear to be the wife of anybody. She gave you the impression of being a free lance among women, joyously insolent and in dependent; and the bonds of matrimony seemed to press very lightly on her frivolous, butterfly soul. She was not what one would call positively young any longer, being a trifle over forty, but she was so slim and light on her feet, besides know ing exactly what kind of corsets would give her the most perfectly pliant and svelte figure, that she was generously allowed by her men friends (though not by her woman rivals) to pass for being still in the early thirties. She went in thoroughly, too, for all the newest methods of skin treatment and succeeded in pre serving a fresh, and even brilliant, natural complexion, despite the heats of India. She was tall and brown-haired, with dark eyes Which had a Sparkle of the devil's own mischief in them; she had very white, even teeth, and could smile bewitchingly.
