Feminist Translation Studies: Local and Transnational Perspectives situates feminist translation as political activism. Chapters highlight the multiple agendas and visions of feminist translation and the different political voices and cultural heritages through which it speaks across times and places, addressing the question of how both literary and nonliterary discourses migrate and contribute to local and transnational processes of feminist knowledge building and political activism. This collection does not pursue a narrow, fixed definition of feminism that is based solely on (Eurocentric or West-centric) gender politics-rather, Feminist Translation Studies: Local and Transnational Perspectives seeks to expand our understanding of feminist action not only to include feminist translation as resistance against multiple forms of domination, but also to rethink feminist translation through feminist theories and practices developed in different geohistorical and disciplinary contexts. In so doing, the collection expands the geopolitical, sociocultural and historical scope of the field from different disciplinary perspectives, pointing towards a more transnational, interdisciplinary and overtly political conceptualization of translation studies.

Описание: Finalist for the 2020 Prose Awards (Language and Linguistics Category)The emergence of transgender communities into the public eye over the past few decades has brought some new understanding, but also renewed outbreaks of violent backlash. In Transgender, Translation, Translingual Address Douglas Robinson seeks to understand the “translational” or “translingual” dialogues between cisgendered and transgendered people. Drawing on a wide range of LGBT scholars, philosophers, sociologists, sexologists, and literary voices, Robinson sets up cis-trans dialogues on such issues as “being born in the wrong body,” binary vs. anti-binary sex/gender identities, and the nature of transition and transformation. Prominent voices in the book include Kate Bornstein, C. Jacob Hale, and Sassafras Lowrey. The theory of translation mobilized in the book is not the traditional equivalence-based one, but Callon and Latour’s sociology of translation as “speaking for someone else,” which grounds the study of translation in social pressures to conform to group norms. In addition, however, Robinson translates a series of passages from Finnish trans novels into English, and explores the “translingual address” that emerges when those English translations are put into dialogue with cis and trans scholars.
Автор: Almanna, Ali Название: Semantics for translation students ISBN: 1906165580 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781906165581 Издательство: Peter Lang Рейтинг: Цена: 69190.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: This book is an introduction to semantics for students and researchers who are new to the field, especially those interested in Arabic–English translation and Arabic–English contrastive studies. The book first presents key concepts in semantics, pragmatics, semiotics, syntax and morphology and gradually introduces readers to the central questions of semantics. These issues are then analysed and discussed in conjunction with the act of translating between Arabic and English. Seeking a balance between theoretical developments and empirical investigation, the book thus provides both a systematic overview of semantics and an application in the field of English and Arabic contrastive semantics, hence offering a resource for students and teachers of Arabic–English translation.

Автор: Jiaoyue Chen Название: An Exploration of Formulaic Language in Chinese University Students` Written Texts ISBN: 1433169614 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781433169618 Издательство: Peter Lang Рейтинг: Цена: 100600.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: This is a descriptive study, based on PhD research, that aims to find out what sorts of formulaic language are used by Chinese learners of English, and what the learners think about the concept, learning, use and teaching formulaic language in the EFL context. The author does this by analyzing texts written by two groups of Chinese EFL learners (83 first-year college students and 73 third-year college students) and interviews with 12 focal participants (6 from each group). The main findings are that formulaic language did occur in the learners’ output, and that there was a measure of correspondence between the ‘strings’ that the students identified for themselves as holistic units, and ‘clusters’ that the researcher identified computationally as frequent. The terms core formulaic language pairs and shared formulaic language were proposed, suggesting a broader view of what is formulaic on the part of the EFL learners. This book ends with a discussion of the implications for teaching practice and the direction for future research on formulaic language in the EFL context.
This book seeks to (1) familiarise Translation and Interpreting (T/I) students/researchers/scholars with different qualitative and quantitative (various statistical and mathematical formulae and equations) techniques when analysing and interpreting results/findings; (2) make T/I students, researchers, and scholars more critical and prudent readers of both qualitative and quantitative research methods; (3) improve the quality of T/I scholars’ research papers employing various qualitative and quantitative research methods; and (4) facilitate the teaching/instruction of qualitative and quantitative research methods in T/I classrooms.
Unlike most translation and interpreting research books, this book discusses both qualitative and quantitative aspects of T/I studies. It also proposes some new and updated information regarding translation assessment and evaluation products. This text also covers the applicability of abstracting and indexing as most translation and interpreting students are not familiar with journal metrics regarding where and how to publish their research papers. Last but not least, the book includes different translation and interpreting examples, Learn More! and Read More! sections which add to the book.

Описание: Western literature, from the mysterious figure of Marco Polo to the deliberate fictions of Daniel Defoe and Mark Twain, has constructed portraits of China born of dreamy parody or sheer prejudice. The Wests attempt to understand China has proven as difficult as Chinas attempt to understand the West. A Poetics of Translation is the result of academic conversations between scholars in China and the West relating to issues in translation. "Translation" here is meant not only as the linguistic challenges of translating from Chinese into English or English into Chinese, but also as the wider questions of cultural translation at a time when China is in a period of rapid change. The volume illustrates the need for scholars, both eastern and western, to learn very quickly to live within the exchange of ideas, often with few precedents to guide or advise. This book also reflects the final impossibility of the task of translation, which is always, at best, approximate. By examining texts from the Bible to poetry and from historical treatises to Shakespeare, this volume carefully interrogatesaand ultimately broadensatranslation by exposing the multiple ways in which linguistic, cultural, religious, historical, and philosophical meaning are formed through cross-cultural interaction. Readers invested in the complexities of translation betwixt China and the West will find this volume full of intriguing studies and attentive readings that encompass the myriad issues surrounding East-West translation with rigor and imagination.
American and Israeli Jews have historically clashed over the contours of Jewish identity, and their experience of modern Jewish life has been radically different. As Philip Roth put it, they are the "heirs jointly of a drastically bifurcated legacy." But what happens when the encounter between American and Israeli Jewishness takes place in literary form--when Jewish American novels make aliyah, or when Israeli novels are imported for consumption by the diaspora?
Reading Israel, Reading America explores the politics of translation as it shapes the understandings and misunderstandings of Israeli literature in the United States and American Jewish literature in Israel. Engaging in close readings of translations of iconic novels by the likes of Philip Roth, Saul Bellow, Bernard Malamud, Amos Oz, A. B. Yehoshua, and Yoram Kaniuk--in particular, the ideologically motivated omissions and additions in the translations, and the works' reception by reviewers and public intellectuals--Asscher decodes the literary encounter between Israeli and American Jews. These discrepancies demarcate an ongoing cultural dialogue around representations of violence, ethics, Zionism, diaspora, and the boundaries between Jews and non-Jews. Navigating the disputes between these "rival siblings" of the Jewish world, Asscher provocatively untangles the cultural relations between Israeli and American Jews.
