Описание: The Banking Industry Architecture Network (BIAN) is a global, not-for profit association of banks, solution providers, consultancy companies, integrators and academic partners with the shared aim of defining a semantic standard for the banking industry covering almost all the well-known architectural layers. The BIAN was formed in 2008 by a group of banks and solution providers with the shared aim of defining a semantic Service Operation standard for the financial services industry. At a later stage other standards bodies, like ISO and IFX, joined along with some academic partners. BIAN`s expectation is that a standard definition of business functions and service interactions that describe the general construct of any bank will be of significant benefit to the industry. When compared to an increasing number of proprietary designs, a dedicated industry standard, like BIAN, provides the following main benefits:¢ It enables the more efficient and effective development and integration of software solutions for and between banks;¢ It significantly lowers the overall integration costs;¢ It improves the operational efficiency within and between banks and provides the opportunity for greater solution and capability re-use within and among banks;¢ It supports the current need for more industry integration and collaboration through the usage of (open) APIs;¢ It supports the adoption of more flexible business service sourcing models and enhances the evolution and adoption of shared third party business services;¢ It supports FinTechs and RegTechs to gain an easy insight in the complex financial services industry structure. This book is intended for those enterprise, business and solution architects in the financial services industry (FSI) who are interested in applying the BIAN Industry Standard in their organization. It will provide readers with in-depth knowledge to help them understand the full construct of BIAN artifacts, how to apply them and how they can contribute to help the BIAN standard fulfill their (organization`s) needs. The authors of the book expect the readers to have an in-depth knowledge of IT architectural principles and methodologies. Описание: We are pleased to make this classic work accessible to a wider audience.

The Library of History, written between 60 BCE and 30 BCE by Diodorus Siculus, is not widely read because it is loaded down with detailed descriptions of all the nations of his time and obscure histories, which are of interest only to specialists.

But there is a gem hidden by all that dusty verbiage: one of best ancient accounts of many Greek myths. It contains the best surviving account of the entire myth of Heracles. It contains excellent concise accounts of the complete myths of Dionysus, Jason, Medea and the Argonauts, Theseus and the Minotaur, Oedipus and the Seven Against Thebes, and Daedalus. It contains brief accounts of many other myths.

This edition includes only the parts of the Library of History that are about Greek myths. It breaks the text up into chapters and adds subheadings to make it more readable.

Diodorus sometimes tries to explain away the myths, but soon reverts to the myth itself. For example, he says that Heracles did so much good during his life that people worshiped him after his death, leading to the myth that he was deified after he died. But right afterwards, he says that Hera reconciled with Heracles after he was deified.

Whether you are just learning about these myths or are an expert looking for more details about them, this book is for you.

2007 — A Choice Magazine Outstanding Academic Book

Sicilian historian Diodorus Siculus (ca. 100-30 BCE) is our only surviving source for a continuous narrative of Greek history from Xerxes' invasion to the Wars of the Successors following the death of Alexander the Great. Yet this important historian has been consistently denigrated as a mere copyist who slavishly reproduced the works of earlier historians without understanding what he was writing. By contrast, in this iconoclastic work Peter Green builds a convincing case for Diodorus' merits as a historian. Through a fresh English translation of a key portion of his multi-volume history (the so-called Bibliotheke, or "Library") and a commentary and notes that refute earlier assessments of Diodorus, Green offers a fairer, better balanced estimate of this much-maligned historian.

The portion of Diodorus' history translated here covers the period 480-431 BCE, from the Persian invasion of Greece to the outbreak of the Peloponnesian War. This half-century, known as the Pentekontaetia, was the Golden Age of Periclean Athens, a time of unprecedented achievement in drama, architecture, philosophy, historiography, and the visual arts. Green's accompanying notes and commentary revisit longstanding debates about historical inconsistencies in Diodorus' work and offer thought-provoking new interpretations and conclusions. In his masterful introductory essay, Green demolishes the traditional view of Diodorus and argues for a thorough critical reappraisal of this synthesizing historian, who attempted nothing less than a "universal history" that begins with the gods of mythology and continues down to the eve of Julius Caesar's Gallic campaigns.

Описание:

Only one surviving source provides a continuous narrative of Greek history from Xerxes' invasion to the Wars of the Successors following the death of Alexander the Great—the Bibliotheke, or "Library," produced by Sicilian historian Diodorus Siculus (ca. 90–30 BCE). Yet generations of scholars have disdained Diodorus as a spectacularly unintelligent copyist who only reproduced, and often mangled, the works of earlier historians. Arguing for a thorough critical reappraisal of Diodorus as a minor but far from idiotic historian himself, Peter Green published Diodorus Siculus, Books 11-12.37.1, a fresh translation, with extensive commentary, of the portion of Diodorus's history dealing with the period 480–431 BCE, the so-called "Golden Age" of Athens.

This is the only recent modern English translation of the Bibliotheke in existence. In the present volume—the first of two covering Diodorus's text up to the death of Alexander—Green expands his translation of Diodorus up to Athens' defeat after the Peloponnesian War. In contrast to the full scholarly apparatus in his earlier volume (the translation of which is incorporated) the present volume's purpose is to give students, teachers, and general readers an accessible version of Diodorus's history. Its introduction and notes are especially designed for this audience and provide an up-to-date overview of fifth-century Greece during the years that saw the unparalleled flowering of drama, architecture, philosophy, historiography, and the visual arts for which Greece still remains famous.
