Giovanni Antonio Canal (1697-1768), known as Canaletto, began his career as a scene painter for the theaters of Venice. The artist is best known for his ability to capture encompassing views of the Venetian cityscape in paint, works that were frequently sold to European aristocrats on the Grand Tour. These early paintings often subtly blur the boundary between the real and imaginary, as the artist masterfully repositioned buildings and warped viewpoints to achieve the most holistic presentation of his subject. Although Canaletto is regarded as one of the greatest artists of the 18th century today, his life was mired in controversy as he struggled with his public perception, fighting to be accepted by the Venetian Academy of Fine Arts before dying in poverty.

The main purpose of the publication is to present a linguo-cultural picture of traditional values (such as the value of life, freedom, dignity, family, religion, community, truth, good, beauty, and God) reflected in Anglo-American and Polish paremiology. The author analyzes the proverbs with the use of semantic approach and divides them into several thematic categories and subcategories related to the sphere of values. The paremiological analysis carried out from a contrastive perspective provides additional evidence to support the claim that, despite some widespread axiological views common to languages, there exist distinct differences characteristic only of a given linguo-culture, naturally caused by different, among others, geographical, historical, social, and cultural environments.

The European Capital of Culture is one of the European Union’s most important cultural programmes, its significance transcending a narrow understanding of the cultural sphere. The scheme has been one of the foremost mechanisms contributing to the urban revival of European cities and increasingly close integration in many areas of social and cultural activity. The ECOC 2016 competition (2007-2011), entered by 11 Polish cities, took place in an exceptionally favourable context. The ECOC 2016 competition in Poland served as an impetus for many changes to take place in the participant cities. These particularly applied to the sociocultural sphere, encompassing such issues as a city’s identity and social capital. Consequently, it became possible to create new urban narratives which also contributed to changes regarding the cities’ images. In some cases, this could even be described as a real revolution which was able to take place as a result of unprecedented social mobilisation.
This book is a collection of papers pertaining to some of the current problems of language description couched in terms of recent advances of the theory of Cognitive Linguistics.
