Описание:

When the World Turned Upside Down is a collection of 66 essays and opinion columns written between 2019 and 2022, a period of momentous—some unimaginable—developments in the United States and across the world. This book stands at the intersection of opinion journalism, history, and chronicling offering a dialogue between past and present (or present and past). They are, to use the often-quoted phrase, first drafts of history.

Over the past five years, the world has witnessed several "unimaginables" about which the author felt compelled to write. Some of the book’s essays identify, analyze, and connect parallels between the U.S. Antebellum and Civil War and the contemporary increasingly polarized context that reached an explosive peak during the 2020 elections and the violent attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Shrouded in a cloud of unprecedented global pestilence, the world has witnessed dramatic political and geopolitical change, mostly for the worse: China, Russia, Hungary, Belarus, Myanmar, Cuba, even Puerto Rico. Essays in this book discuss these transformations from a historical perspective as well as mass popular resistance, in places like Cuba, where they seemed unimaginable.

The book’s final section, "Not Boring at All: Globalization and World Politics," explores the global ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical rearrangements related to China’s meteoric ascendance as a world power, Russia’s militaristic expansionism, and related topics.

"In When the World Turned Upside Down, Luis Mart?nez-Fern?ndez demonstrates that he is not ‘merely’ an acclaimed historian, but an engaging, sharp-witted social commentator. This excellent collection of columns, written during and about what Mart?nez-Fern?ndez rightly terms ‘the unimaginable events of 2019-2022,’ is dazzling for his easy, readable blend of history, sociology, popular culture, politics and more."

—Jeff Robbins, Columnist, Boston Herald and Creators Syndicate

"Mart?nez-Fern?ndez’s book reads like a series of missives from the front, capturing the drama of unfolding, often unpredictable, events. The author is a master story-weaver, drawing from the warp and weft of our national and global histories to reveal patterns in today’s events."

—Suzette Martinez Standring, Author of The Art of Column Writing

"Professor Mart?nez-Fern?ndez fuses the perspective of a historian with a journalist’s eye on wide-ranging contemporary events. The result is an exhilarating read and a broader understanding of today’s world."

—George Breslauer, Professor and Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Emeritus, UC Berkeley

Описание:

Outskirts Press releases new Civil War book by celebrated author Dr. Virginia Lohmann Nodhturft. This is the first and only published book about the largest spy ring in Richmond, Virginia during the Civil War headed by Elizabeth Van Lew who worked with FWE Lohmann. These two spies were strong abolitionists who risked their lives for Union, flag and abolition of slavery. The book will peak the readers interest in how they planned and executed their secret missions.

The author takes you behind the scenes where secret missions were planned and executed such as the famous Libby Prison escape and the Dahlgren Affair well known in history books. The secret code developed by Elizabeth Van Lew that was used to send messages to Generals Kilpatrick, Grant, and others in the field regarding troop size, strength and location is interpreted for the first time in history, which has been a mystery for over a hundred years by historians.

The book shares the life of FWE Lohmann a secret agent in Richmond Virginia and the extraordinary risks he took to transport black families across the border to safety and secreting escaped Union prisoners. His role in developing the underground railroad is discussed as well as specific secret missions. Lohmann betrayed by a confederate spy in disguise and was sent to one of the worst prisons in Richmond Virginia castle Thunder for transporting a black family across the border. While incarcerated he was severely tortured for the names of the others spies. He was hung by his thumbs rendering them completely useless, was flagged and forced to wear a barrel shirt making it impossible for him to sit or lie down. He was denied blankets in the cold basement, food, mail, spiritual support. Snow blew in the bar windows and he had to fight off his nocturnal friends the rats.

When the fall of Richmond occurred FWE took advantage of the confusion in the city and escaped seeking refuge in Elizabeth Van Lew's home. As Richmond fell, Grant had a celebratory dinner at Van Lew's home with FWE Lohmann and other members of the Richmond Underground. These two patriots who risked their lives, fortune and careers were on the right side of this conflict in time.
The author was the great, great granddaughter of FWE Lohmann who has firsthand knowledge of the secret missions undertaken during the Civil War passed on by generations of stories.

The book can be obtained at Barnes and Noble or Amazon. For further info contact Dr. Virginia Nodhturft ginny3644@verizon.net or Box .... Temple Terrace, Fl. 33617

Описание:

Shortly after the Civil War ended, David Power Conyngham, an Irish Catholic journalist and war veteran, began compiling the stories of Catholic chaplains and nuns who served during the war. His manuscript, Soldiers of the Cross, is the fullest record written during the nineteenth century of the Catholic Church's involvement in the war, as it documents the service of fourteen chaplains and six female religious communities, representing both North and South. Many of Coyngham's chapters contain new insights into the clergy during the war that are unavailable elsewhere, either during his time or ours, making the work invaluable to Catholic and Civil War historians. The introduction contains over a dozen letters written between 1868 and 1870 from high-ranking Confederate and Union officials, such as Confederate General Robert E. Lee, Union Surgeon General William Hammond, and Union General George B. McClellan, who praise the church's services during the war. Chapters on Fathers William Corby and Peter P. Cooney, as well as the Sisters of the Holy Cross, cover subjects relatively well known to Catholic scholars, yet other chapters are based on personal letters and other important primary sources that have not been published prior to this book.

Unpublished due to Conyngham's untimely death, Soldiers of the Cross remained hidden away in an archive for more than a century. Now annotated and edited so as to be readable and useful to scholars and modern readers, this long-awaited publication of Soldiers of the Cross is a fitting presentation of Conyngham's last great work.

Описание: Despite popular belief, the Civil War did not end when Robert E. Lee surrendered to Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox, Virginia, in April 1865. The Confederacy still had tens of thousands of soldiers under arms, in three main field armies and countless smaller commands scattered throughout the South.  Although pressed by Union forces at varying degrees, all of the remaining Confederate armies were capable of continuing the war if they chose to do so. But they did not, even when their political leaders ordered them to continue the fight. Convinced that most civilians no longer wanted to continue the war, the senior Confederate military leadership, over the course of several weeks, surrendered their armies under different circumstances.Gen. Joseph Johnston surrendered his army in North Carolina only after contentious negotiations with Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman. Gen. Richard Taylor ended the fighting in Alabama in the face of two massive Union incursions into the state rather than try to consolidate with other Confederate armies. Personal rivalry also played a part in his practical considerations to surrender. Gen. Edmund Kirby Smith had the decision to surrender taken out of his hands - disastrous economic conditions in his Trans-Mississippi Department had eroded morale to such an extent that his soldiers demobilized themselves, leaving Kirby Smith a general without an army. The end of the Confederacy was a messy and complicated affair, a far cry from the tidy closure associated with the events at Appomattox.
