When the Bolsheviks seized power in 1917, they set themselves the task of building socialism in the vast landscape of the former Russian Empire, a territory populated by hundreds of different peoples belonging to a multitude of linguistic, religious, and ethnic groups. Before 1917, the Bolsheviks had called for the national self-determination of all peoples and had condemned all forms of colonization as exploitative. After attaining power, however, they began to express concern that it would not be possible for Soviet Russia to survive without the cotton of Turkestan and the oil of the Caucasus. In an effort to reconcile their anti-imperialist position with their desire to hold on to as much territory as possible, the Bolsheviks integrated the national idea into the administrative-territorial structure of the new Soviet state. In Empire of Nations, Francine Hirsch examines the ways in which former imperial ethnographers and local elites provided the Bolsheviks with ethnographic knowledge that shaped the very formation of the new Soviet Union. The ethnographers—who drew inspiration from the Western European colonial context—produced all-union censuses, assisted government commissions charged with delimiting the USSR's internal borders, led expeditions to study "the human being as a productive force," and created ethnographic exhibits about the "Peoples of the USSR." In the 1930s, they would lead the Soviet campaign against Nazi race theories. Hirsch illuminates the pervasive tension between the colonial-economic and ethnographic definitions of Soviet territory; this tension informed Soviet social, economic, and administrative structures. A major contribution to the history of Russia and the Soviet Union, Empire of Nations also offers new insights into the connection between ethnography and empire.
The Social Construction of Black Masculinity examines the legacy of negotiating black masculinity in a relatively free society that forced black men to justify claims of equitable humanity. The book represents an unapologetic narrative about behavioral choices by black men, which were framed by a history of forced distancing from their covenant with God, deliberate character assassinations, and emasculation in plain sight of their women and children.

The construction industry as a workplace is commonly seen as problematic for a number of reasons, including its worrying health and safety record, the instability of its workforce, and the poorly regulated nature of the sector. It is surprising therefore, that the sector and its working practices remain so under-theorised.
Now though, there is a growing interest in and awareness of the utility of an ethnographic approach to the construction industry. Ethnographic Research in the Construction Industry draws together in one volume a set of expert contributions which demonstrate how social science perspectives, rooted in ethnographic research on construction sites and with construction workers themselves, can generate fresh insights into the social, cultural and material ways that the industry and conditions of work in it are experienced and played out.
Each chapter develops discussion on the basis of an ethnographic case study to examine how theoretically informed ethnographic research can help us understand industry problems, and can challenge common perceptions of the construction industry. This book will be of interest to students and scholars of anthropology, sociology, geography and organization studies, as well as those from the built environment and related applied fields.

An in-depth analysis of how social constituents of identity influence and are influenced by the processes of a specific social site—a school.
School Worlds addresses debates on:
• The role that a school plays in the construction of gender, social class and religious attitudes of its students
• The kind of interactions that take place in school settings due to the varied perceptions of these social identities
• The influence of peer relations and the manner in which gender differences are constituted, re-structured and sometimes overcome
The book focuses on the experiences of schooling through an ethnographic study of everyday life in a secondary school. It assesses classroom interactions amongst teachers and pupils as well as the non-classroom situations within the school space, highlighting the diversity in such spaces that help generate notions of identity.

Описание: While most people associate the term learning disabilities” with children, or students, research has shown that these problems do not disappear in adulthood. As a result, interest in adults with learning disabilities is increasing. In Speaking for Themselves, nine adults with learning disabilities tell the ""inside story"" of how they deal with a very real handicap that the outside world does not see. Through their interview format, authors Paul J. Gerber and Henry B. Reiff take the reader beyond the usual boundaries of educational research and into the daily lives of fascinating individuals. Their subjects respond to in-depth to questions about careers, education, social and emotional concerns, daily living, and their own keys to success. Faced with a variety of challengesfrom problems with processing language to difficulties in organizing daily routinesthey describe their own strategies for coping with them, which are often amusing, sometimes sorrowful, and always intriguing. The subjects go on to offer their own first-hand definitions of learning disabilities and to give suggestions and advice not only to other adults who share their difficulties, but also to all of us who will come into contact with them. Their contributions produce a book that extends its interest not only to professionals in the field of learning disabilities, but to family members, friends, employers, educators, and psychologists. The interviews in this unique volume demonstrate that, for many individuals, learning disabilities do not preclude successful adjustment to adult life.

Автор: Zachary Kingdon Название: Ethnographic Collecting and African Agency in Early Colonial West Africa: A Study of Trans-Imperial Cultural Flows ISBN: 1501377884 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781501377884 Издательство: Bloomsbury Academic Рейтинг: Цена: 28500.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: The early collections from Africa in Liverpool’s World Museum reflect the city’s longstanding shipping and commercial links with Africa’s Atlantic coast. A principal component of these collections is an assemblage of several thousand artefacts from western Africa that were transported to institutions in northwest England between 1894 and 1916 by the Liverpool steam ship engineer Arnold Ridyard. While Ridyard’s collecting efforts can be seen to have been shaped by the steamers’ dynamic capacity to connect widely separated people and places, his Methodist credentials were fundamental in determining the profile of his African networks, because they meant that he was not part of official colonial authority in West Africa.
Kingdon’s study uncovers the identities of many of Ridyard’s numerous West African collaborators and discusses their interests and predicaments under the colonial dispensation. Against this background account, their agendas are examined with reference to surviving narratives that accompanied their donations and within the context of broader processes of trans-imperial exchange, through which they forged new identities and statuses for themselves and attempted to counter expressions of British cultural imperialism in the region. The study concludes with a discussion of the competing meanings assigned to the Ridyard assemblage by the Liverpool Museum and examines the ways in which its re-contextualization in museum contexts helped to efface signs of the energies and narratives behind its creation.
