Описание:

This is the story of Shirley Rosalyn Kraus Tydor, the American-born daughter of early 20th-century Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Her father was an atheist\communist and her mother a traditional Jew. Shirley, the rebel, became a career woman and married her boss, an Orthodox Holocaust survivor and a widower twice her age, with two adult children. The couple lived in South Dakota and Montana, returned to NY in 1959 where their daughter was born, and worked as travel agents before moving to Israel in 1974. Shirley traveled the world when few Americans even possessed passports. For the Love of Shirley provides readers with an intimate glimpse into one Jewish woman’s challenges and choices in postwar Jewish America.

Описание: A broad cultural history of the postwar US, this book traces how middle-class white Americans increasingly embraced figures they understood as outsiders and used them to re-imagine their own cultural position as marginal and alienated. Romanticizing outsiders and becoming rebels, middle-class whites denied the contradictions between self-determination and social connection.

Описание: This new cultural history of Jewish life and identity in the United States after World War II focuses on the process of upward mobility. Rachel Kranson challenges the common notion that most American Jews unambivalently celebrated their generally strong growth in economic status and social acceptance during the booming postwar era. In fact, a significant number of Jewish religious, artistic, and intellectual leaders worried about the ascent of large numbers of Jews into the American middle class. Kranson reveals that many Jews were deeply concerned that their lives—affected by rapidly changing political pressures, gender roles, and religious practices—were becoming dangerously disconnected from authentic Jewish values. She uncovers how Jewish leaders delivered jeremiads that warned affluent Jews of hypocrisy and associated ""good"" Jews with poverty, even at times romanticizing life in America's immigrant slums and Europe's impoverished shtetls. Jewish leaders, while not trying to hinder economic development, thus cemented an ongoing identification with the Jewish heritage of poverty and marginality as a crucial element in an American Jewish ethos.

Описание: In The Feminine Mystique, Jewish-raised Betty Friedan struck out against a postwar American culture that pressured women to play the role of subservient housewives. However, Friedan never acknowledged that many American women refused to retreat from public life during these years. Now, A Jewish Feminine Mystique? examines how Jewish women sought opportunities and created images that defied the stereotypes and prescriptive ideology of the "feminine mystique." As workers with or without pay, social justice activists, community builders, entertainers, and businesswomen, most Jewish women championed responsibilities outside their homes. Jewishness played a role in shaping their choices, shattering Friedan's assumptions about how middle-class women lived in the postwar years. Focusing on ordinary Jewish women as well as prominent figures such as Judy Holliday, Jennie Grossinger, and Herman Wouk's fictional Marjorie Morningstar, leading scholars from a variety of disciplines explore here the wide canvas upon which American Jewish women made their mark after the Second World War.

Описание: Who was the “Mysterious Sofía,” whose letter in November 1934 was sent from Washington DC to Mexico City and intercepted by the Mexican Secret Service? In The Mysterious Sofía Stephen J. C. Andes uses the remarkable story of Sofía del Valle to tell the history of Catholicism’s global shift from north to south and the importance of women to Catholic survival and change over the course of the twentieth century. As a devout Catholic single woman, neither nun nor mother, del Valle resisted religious persecution in an era of Mexican revolutionary upheaval, became a labor activist in a time of class conflict, founded an educational movement, toured the United States as a public lecturer, and raised money for Catholic ministries—all in an age dominated by economic depression, gender prejudice, and racial discrimination. The rise of the Global South marked a new power dynamic within the Church as Latin America moved from the margins of activism to the vanguard.

Del Valle’s life and the stories of those she met along the way illustrate the shared pious practices, gender norms, and organizational networks that linked activists across national borders. Told through the eyes of a little-known laywoman from Mexico, Andes shows how women journeyed from the pews into the heart of the modern world.

Описание:

The Inability to Love borrows its title from Alexander and Margarete Mitscherlich's 1967 landmark book The Inability to Mourn, which discussed German society's lack of psychological reckoning with the Holocaust. Challenging that notion, Agnes Mueller turns to recently published works by prominent contemporary German, non-Jewish writers to examine whether there has been a thorough engagement with German history and memory. She focuses on literature that invokes Jews, Israel, and the Holocaust. Mueller's aim is to shed light on pressing questions concerning German memories of the past, and on German images of Jews in Germany at a moment that s ideologically and historically fraught.

One by One: A Memoir: Love and Loss in the Shadows of Opiate America

Описание: A passionate and heartrending memoir of tragedy and perseverance from an opiate addict in an opiate addicted community, and an up-close look at America's new health crisis.

Nick Bush was a good kid--many of them are--and no one saw it coming. At first it didn't seem so bad. Then came the cravings. And then came Nick's status as one of the three million people in the United States alone who abuse opiates. Estimates for global abuse of opiates surpass thirty-six million. Deaths in the US from opiate abuse increased 21 percent from 2016 to 2017; forty-two thousand people died and, as a result, for the second year in a row, the life expectancy of Americans dropped . The death count for 2017 is still pending, but the CDC has said it increased substantially and shows no sign of abating. Both Nick's sister and younger brother died from opiate overdoses. So did many of his friends.

Incredibly, the stories of the people suffering from opiate addiction rarely get told. Legislation to fight the epidemic is proposed and then thrown out or insufficiently implemented. And people continue to suffer. Communities are torn apart from generation to generation.

In One by One, Nick steps out of the opiate shadows to share his page-turning true story. He is remarkably candid about how he became an addict, as well as the stories of those around him, the deaths of his siblings and friends, and what rock bottom is like. He also brings courage, sharing how he overcame the disease and inspiring others to do the same. This read brings humanity to the disease, faces to the addiction, and an understanding of how it takes hold of people and how to help them before it's too late.

Описание: A love story spanning thirty years. A woman dedicated to her faith. A forbidden love with an uncertain destiny.

Meeting as teenagers, Nicikia and C.J. had an instant connection. A precious and monumental friendship was established in the school hallways when the teenagers needed each other the most. Though their chemistry was undeniable, they went their separate ways, experiencing love and relationships with other people. But there was something that drew Nicikia and C.J. back together time and again.

The road to one another was rocky and difficult to navigate. Nicikia had to wrestle with what God was guiding her to do against outside influences, which made her question her faith. She chose to believe in herself and trust that the messages from God were leading her in the right direction.

One of a Kind is a memoir written with honesty and candor as the reader follows the ups and downs in this tumultuous relationship. It is also a story about faith and one woman's quest to become the best version of herself....
