Описание: This volume collects essays that approach notions of creating, maintaining, and crossing boundaries in the history of the English language. The concept of boundaries is variously defined within linguistics depending on the theoretical framework, from formal and theoretical perspectives to specific fields and more empirical, physical, and perceptual angles. The contributions to this volume do not take one particular theoretical or methodological approach but, instead, explore how examining various types of boundaries—linguistic, conceptual, analytical, generic, physical—helps us illuminate and account for historical use, variation, and change in English. In their exploration of various topics in the history of English, contributions ask a range of questions: what does it mean to set up boundaries between time periods? When do language varieties have distinct boundaries and when do they overlap? Where do language users draw up clausal, constructional, semantic, phonetic/phonological boundaries? Thus, the chapters explore not only how boundaries illustrate synchronic and diachronic features in the history of the English language but also what we can discover by questioning perceived or actual boundaries.

Описание: A major reexamination of the father of the Hudson River School in relation to his European roots and travels

Thomas Cole (1801-1848), arguably the greatest American landscape artist of his generation, is presented here in a new light: as an international figure, born in England, and in dialogue with the major landscape painters of the age, including J.M.W. Turner and John Constable. Cole traveled in Europe from 1829 to 1832. Thomas Cole's Journey reexamines his seminal works of 1832-36--notably The Oxbow and Course of Empire--as a culminating response to his experiences of British art and society and of Italian landscape painting. These, combined with Cole's passion for the American wilderness and his horror of the industrial revolution in Britain, led him to create works that offer a distinctive, even dissident, response to the economic and political rise of the United States and the ecological changes then underway. This groundbreaking book also discusses Cole's influence on later artists, from Frederic Edwin Church to Ed Ruscha.

Описание:

In the 1930s and 1940s, rural reformers in the United States and Mexico waged unprecedented campaigns to remake their countrysides in the name of agrarian justice and agricultural productivity. Agrarian Crossings tells the story of how these campaigns were conducted in dialogue with one another as reformers in each nation came to exchange models, plans, and strategies with their equivalents across the border.

Dismantling the artificial boundaries that can divide American and Latin American history, Tore Olsson shows how the agrarian histories of both regions share far more than we realize. He traces the connections between the US South and the plantation zones of Mexico, places that suffered parallel problems of environmental decline, rural poverty, and gross inequities in land tenure. Bringing this tumultuous era vividly to life, he describes how Roosevelt's New Deal drew on Mexican revolutionary agrarianism to shape its program for the rural South. Olsson also looks at how the US South served as the domestic laboratory for the Rockefeller Foundation's "green revolution" in Mexico--which would become the most important Third World development campaign of the twentieth century--and how the Mexican government attempted to replicate the hydraulic development of the Tennessee Valley Authority after World War II.

Rather than a comparative history, Agrarian Crossings is an innovative history of comparisons and the ways they affected policy, moved people, and reshaped the landscape.

Описание:

Roop is torn between pleasing his hard-working immigrant parents and living the less traditional life of a typical Canadian college student.

Already avoiding a marriage his mother is trying to arrange for him to a perfectly lovely Indian girl named Neetu, Roop learns that an old friend of his father's has arrived in the country with his daughter, who recently enrolled at his school.

Roop is intrigued. If he must agree to an arranged marriage to keep the peace, might the newcomer be a better match for him than his mother's initial choice, whom he barely knows? How can he meet and get to know her without Neetu's family finding out? Perhaps a new friend he meets on campus, Preet, can help him untangle his complicated personal life.

Find out what happens when the different cultures and generations collide. Written as an entertaining and insightful stage play about a family of South Asian immigrants, Crossings takes you on a heartfelt journey through the tenuous world of cultural heritage and brings the nuances of each societal group to life in a uniquely personal way.

Описание: This volume attempts for the first time a comprehensive view of the momentous process of German-American cultural transfer during the 18th and 19th centuries, which played an important part in the formation of an American national and cultural identity, a process to which the New England Transcendentalists contributed some of the decisive ingredients, but which has largely escaped the attention of German and American scholarship. In each chapter a specific problem is treated systematically from a clearly defined perspective, deficiencies of existing translation theories are exposed, so that in the concluding chapters 13 and 14 (with an unpublished memorandum by Alexander von Humboldt) a cohesive view of the entire process emerges. A comprehensive bibliography will facilitate further scholarly pursuits.

Barriers, Borders and Crossings in British Postcolonial Fiction

Описание: “Dr Cecilia Acquarone’s perceptive analysis of liminality in British postcolonial fiction from a gender perspective constitutes an innovative, thought-provoking and crystal-clear study of female ‘versus’ male responses to the challenges of postmodernity as exemplified by significant British postcolonial writers. The book can be justly praised for the lucid use of theoretical language and the exploration of modern and postmodern ideology in an unobstrusive form, pinpointing the most significant phenomena related to the topic in question. Dr Acquarone locates the relevance of barriers, borders and crossings with gender on the agenda within the realm of tragedy and comedy, providing a sensible and sensitive humanistic approach to the works of some of the most outstanding authors of British postcolonial fiction. In sum, Cecilia Acquarone’s book is undoubtedly an invaluable contribution to the field of British postcolonial studies.”—Dr Antonio Ballesteros-Gonzalez, Spanish Open University“Cecilia Acquarone’s Barriers, Borders and Crossing in British Postcolonial Fiction: A Gender Perspective is a particularly interesting contribution to the field of postcolonial criticism due to its perceptive intertwining of a sound theoretical background and a sensitive close reading of representative novels by major writers of contemporary multicultural Britain. … In a clear prose, she sheds light on highly complex philosophical and sociological issues, expounding on what the feminine and the masculine perspective can contribute to the hard task of peaceful coexistence in contemporary British multicultural society.”—?ngeles de la Concha, Catedr?tica de Filolog?a Inglesa, Universidad Nacional de Educaci?n a Distancia“Barriers, Borders and Crossing in British Postcolonial Fiction: A Gender Perspective provides an original attempt to map an increasingly visible body of writing in the UK in recent years. In her analysis of key novels by black and Asian British writers … the author highlights an opposition between the predominantly tragic vision of life of the male authors and the fundamentally comic vision of life found in the women writers. … The author offers a provocative reading of recent black and Asian British fiction as postmodernist works in which the writers respond differently to contemporary conditions. The volume is a significant contribution to the field of postcolonial studies and diaspora studies, and its use of the comedy-tragedy paradigm to understand recent fiction enriches more common approaches to the two major ways of experiencing and discussing diaspora.”—Dr Sof?a Mu?oz-Valdivieso, Associate Professor, University of Malaga

Описание: The experience of witnessing and undertaking border crossings has become a pillar of the contemporary human condition. In order to respond to our global, multidimensional social reality, writers need to generate innovative forms of narration that expand the confines of literary tradition. This study discusses four types of border crossing (migration, intercultural dialogue, multicultural identities, military invasion) and presents literary aesthetics that unfold in Algeria, China, France, Germany, Romania, Switzerland, Trinidad and Tobago, the UK, and the USA. These analyses move from the fall of the Iron Curtain to the rise of the internet, and from the turn of the millennium to the terrorist attacks of 9/11, and the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. Positioned in the field of comparative literature, this book draws upon an extensive background of theoretical thought (e.g. Adorno/Horkheimer, Arendt, Dawkins, Fanon, Freud, Kristeva, Zizek) and reaches into other academic disciplines (such as religious studies). Border crossings thus serve as both theme and methodology, which not only leads to a new definition of post-modern writing, but also underlines literature's relevance in a global society driven by public discourse.
