Описание: The Special Court for Sierra Leone was established through signature of a bilateral treaty between the United Nations and the Government of Sierra Leone in early 2002, making it the third modern ad hoc international criminal tribunal. It has tried various persons, including former Liberian President Charles Ghankay Taylor, for serious violations of international humanitarian law committed during the latter half of the Sierra Leonean armed conflict. It completed its work in December 2013. A new Residual Special Court for Sierra Leone, based in Freetown and with offices in The Hague, has been created to carry out its essential “residual” functions.
This volume, which consists of three books and a CD-ROM and is edited by two legal experts on the Sierra Leone Court, completes the set of edited Law Reports started in 2012. Together, the Law Reports fill the gap of a single and authoritative reference source of the tribunal’s jurisprudence. The law reports are intended for national and international judges, lawyers, academics, students and other researchers as well as transitional justice practitioners in courts, tribunals and truth commissions, and anyone seeking an accurate record of the trials conducted by the Special Court for Sierra Leone.

N.B.: The hardback copy of this title contains a CD-ROM with the decisions that are reproduced in the book and the trial transcripts.
The e-book version does not.

Описание:

From the heart of a bold and brilliant thought-leader comes this compelling memoir and call-to-action, which fills a gaping hole in criminal justice reform literature in a way that only Bianca M. Forde can. Uniquely qualified, following a racially motivated arrest that paradoxically labeled her as both prosecuted and prosecutor, Forde provides an authentic analysis of how prosecutors can truly fulfill their mandate as servants of the law. She tackles the taboo topics that prosecutors are best positioned, but often lack courage, to discuss-from inequities in charging decisions and blind spots affecting Brady disclosures; to dispassionate requests for detention, and detached sentencing recommendations. She candidly shares her evolution as a prosecutor in hopes of accelerating the maturity of rookie prosecutors, inspiring a new way of thinking among veteran prosecutors, and educating community members on why their local vote matters. If mass incarceration is the disease, Forde is firmly convinced that justice-minded, transformational prosecution is, in large part, the cure. This book elevates the conversation on prosecutorial power to a new height, and provides practical guidance that promises to disrupt the status quo.

Описание:

For more than 20 years, Terry Jones began each trial with this opening statement: "Good morning, my name is Terry Jones. I am the Prosecuting Attorney for the 4th Judicial District and in that capacity I represent people of the State of Arkansas."

His memoir is a frank and entertaining insider's look at the American justice system. From the sensational Billie Jean Phillips murder trial, to religious con men, to brutal assault charges, "The cases described here are authentic, although some of the names have been changed to protect the innocent, or the stupid, or because I could not remember who the hell they were."

He is a long time member of the Fayetteville Exchange Club.

Jones is a grill master and flower gardener, who rides a scooter every day to exercise class. He has two grown children, loves to play bad golf, and is a member of a curmudgeons' round table on Wednesdays.

Описание: In Prosecuting the President, Andrew Coan offers a highly engaging look at the long, mostly forgotten history of special prosecutors in American politics. For more than a century, special prosecutors have struck fear into the hearts of Presidents, who have the power to fire them at any time. How could this be, Coan asks? And how could the nation entrust such a high responsibility to such subordinate officials? With vivid storytelling and historical examples, Coan demonstrates that special prosecutors can do much to protect the rule of law under the right circumstances. Many have been thwarted by the formidable challenges of investigating a sitting President and his close associates; a few have abused the powers entrusted to them. But at their best, special prosecutors function as catalysts of democracy, channeling an unfocused popular will to safeguard the rule of law. By raising the visibility of high-level misconduct, they enable the American people to hold the President accountable. Yet, if a President thinks he can fire a special prosecutor without incurring serious political damage, he has the power to do so. Ultimately, Coan concludes, only the American people can decide whether the President is above the law.

Описание: In this exceptionally timely book, law professor Andrew Coan explains what every American needs to know about special prosecutors - perhaps the most important and misunderstood public officials of our time.

The first special prosecutor was appointed by President Ulysses S. Grant in 1875, to investigate a bribery scandal involving his close friends and associates. Ever since, presidents of both parties have appointed special prosecutors and empowered them to operate with unusual independence. Also called special counsels and independent counsels, such appointments became a standard method for neutralizing political scandals and demonstrating the President's commitment to the rule of law. Special counsel Robert Mueller is the latest example.
