Описание: A reconsideration of Arthurian compilations in the late middle ages, looking at the complex ways in which they reshape their material for new audiences.
This book explores how one early medieval poet survived and thrived amidst the political turbulence of sixth century Gaul—with a little help from his friends. Born in northern Italy, Venantius Fortunatus made his career writing for and about members of the Merovingian elite. Although he is no longer dismissed as an opportunistic poetaster who wrote undistinguished flattery for undeserving kings and aristocrats, his work remains unduly neglected. This book reframes Fortunatus as a writer uniquely suited to his times, a professional poet who addressed his contemporaries’ needs and wishes for the prestige and sophistication of Classical culture. His poems and letters enabled his aristocratic patrons to situate themselves in networks, which they made and maintained in order to navigate a post-imperial but not post-Roman world. It makes an important contribution to our understanding of friendship in the Middle Ages and offers a fresh look at the Frankish kingdoms of Merovingian Gaul.

Описание: The emergence of the early American republic as a new nation on the world stage conjured rival visions in the eyes of leading statesmen at home and attentive observers abroad. Thomas Jefferson envisioned the newly independent states as a federation of republics united by common experience, mutual interest, and an adherence to principles of natural rights. His views on popular government and the American experiment in republicanism, and later the expansion of its empire of liberty, offered an influential account of the new nation. While persuasive in crucial respects, his vision of early America did not stand alone as an unrivaled model. The contributors to Rival Visions examine how Jefferson's contemporaries - including Washington, Adams, Hamilton, Madison, and Marshall - articulated their visions for the early American republic. Even beyond America, in this age of successive revolutions and crises, foreign statesmen began to formulate their own accounts of the new nation, its character, and its future prospects. This volume reveals how these vigorous debates and competing rival visions defined the early American republic in the formative epoch after the revolution.

This peculiarity of the American character, so common to our noble progenitors, has been too little noticed, and, in this fast age, only appreciated when recorded as part and parcel of our local history. Having their origin in that fruitful nursery of men and great men, in the most enlarged sense of the word - their pro gress has been steadily westward until the sons of New England now largely populate every Northern State and Territory from the Atlantic to the Pacific, carrying the church, the school and the other noble influences of New England civilization with them. In this there is true romance, but of a character unlike that of the Crusades of earlier centuries. It is romance under the guidance of God. It is, in reality, preaching the Gospel to all nations. The necessities and privations of those pioneer progressives were borne by the strong-minded and the brave sons of the older and more populous States. They came on foot, or on horseback, alone, or with a devoted wife, and perhaps young family, and so dared to plunge into the then unknown 'wilderness, inhabited by the savage, and, perhaps, worse than all, were compelled to encounter new forms of malarious disease from which none were exempt. I am led to dwell upon these reflections for the reason that this now prosperous and beautiful city and the country beyond, was, in the days of which I write, what now has scarcely an existence-an unexplored West. The truthful compass still points westward as it did then; but when we speak of American civilization, the East, the West, the North and the South, have lost their social, and almost their political and geographical significance.
