Описание: A famous Indonesian writer and feminist, Kartini (1879–1904) has been positioned at the forefront of nationalist and feminist movements in post-independence Indonesia, but the story of her struggle for equality has a global, and indeed, timeless reach. Appropriated by both local and international actors and institutions, including Dutch colonials, the Indonesian state, UNESCO and Eleanor Roosevelt, Kartini’s memory has invariably been subjected to the political agendas and contestations occurring at key moments across the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The eight essays in this volume, written by an interdisciplinary group of historians, literary scholars and anthropologists, trace the many ambiguities, paradoxes, inconsistencies and contradictions in Kartini’s memory and iconicity by paying equal attention to both Western and Asian contexts. By analysing the stunning legacy of this brilliant, passionate and self-consciously aristocratic young woman who tried to write her way out of a world of colonial racism and Javanese sexism, Appropriating Kartini analyses one hundred years of colonial, national and transnational struggles over what it means to be a woman of colour in global modernity.

Описание: The pursuit of antiquity was important for scholarly artists in constructing their knowledge of history and cultural identity in late imperial China. By examining versatile trends within paintings in modern China, this book questions the extent to which historical relics have been used to represent the ethnic identity of modern Chinese art. In doing so, this book asks: did the antiquarian movements ultimately serve as a deliberate tool for re-writing Chinese art history in modern China? In searching for the public meaning of inventive private collecting activity, Appropriating Antiquity in Modern Chinese Painting draws on various modes of artistic creation to address how the use of antiquities in early 20th-century Chinese art both produced and reinforced the imaginative links between ancient civilization and modern lives in the late Qing dynasty. Further exploring how these social and cultural transformations were related to the artistic exchanges happening at the time between China, Japan and the West, the book successfully analyses how modernity was translated and appropriated at the turn of the 20th century, throughout Asia and further afield.

This study counters the view that Franklin D. Roosevelt hegemonically exalted Thomas Jefferson to iconic dominance during the Great Depression. It analyzes the diversity of those who appropriated Jefferson to find answers to the socio-economic crisis and modern industrial capitalism. This discourse analysis, spanning the ideological spectrum between 1929–1945, reveals that the creation of the Jefferson icon—in various forms of representation—generated counterhegemonic varieties of Jefferson because the appropriators grafted their values onto the historical figure which led to its transformation. These competing versions of Jefferson expressed a reformed sense of national values not only through commonalities but through the flexibility of interpretative and representational differences.

Описание: This book validates the claim that the process of reproduction of social inequalities in teacher education is not a perfect, static process, but on the contrary, the real "seeds of transformation" within teacher education departments are abundant.
Just about any social need is now met with an opportuniy to "connect" through digital means. But this convenience is not free--it is purchased with vast amounts of personal data transferred through shadowy backchannels to corporations using it to generate profit. The Costs of Connection uncovers this process, this "data colonialism," and its designs for controlling our lives--our ways of knowing; our means of production; our political participation.
Colonialism might seem like a thing of the past, but this book shows that the historic appropriation of land, bodies, and natural resources is mirrored today in this new era of pervasive datafication. Apps, platforms, and smart objects capture and translate our lives into data, and then extract information that is fed into capitalist enterprises and sold back to us. The authors argue that this development foreshadows the creation of a new social order emerging globally--and it must be challenged. Confronting the alarming degree of surveillance already tolerated, they offer a stirring call to decolonize the internet and emancipate our desire for connection.

In this comparative and hybrid study, Reginald A. Wilburn offers the first scholarly work to theorize African American authors' rebellious appropriations of Milton and his canon. Wilburn engages African Americans' transatlantic negotiations with perhaps the preeminent freedom writer in the English tradition.
Preaching the Gospel of Black Revolt contends that early African American authors appropriated and remastered Milton by completing and complicating England's epic poet of liberty with the intertextual originality of repetitive difference. Wilburn focuses on a diverse array of early African American authors, such as Phillis Wheatley, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Frederick Douglass, and Anna Julia Cooper. He examines the presence of Milton in their works as a reflection of early African Americans' rhetorical affiliations with the poet's satanic epic for messianic purposes of freedom and racial uplift.
Wilburn explains that early African American authors were attracted to Milton because of his preeminent status in literary tradition, strong Christian convictions, and poetic mastery of the English language. This tripartite ministry makes Milton an especially indispensible intertext for authors whose writings and oratory were sometimes presumed beneath the dignity of criticism. Through close readings of canonical and obscure texts, Wilburn explores how various authors rebelled against such assessments of black intellect by altering Milton's meanings, themes, and figures beyond orthodox interpretations and imbuing them with hermeneutic shades of interpretive and cultural difference. However they remastered Milton, these artists respected his oeuvre as a sacred yet secular talking book of revolt, freedom, and cultural liberation.
Preaching the Gospel of Black Revolt particularly draws upon recent satanic criticism in Milton studies, placing it in dialogue with methodologies germane to African American literary studies. By exposing the subversive workings of an intertextual Middle Passage in black literacy, Wilburn invites scholars from diverse areas of specialization to traverse within and beyond the cultural veils of racial interpretation and along the color line in literary studies.

Описание: Because of God's heart dream, He has given Himself wholeheartedly and completely to Man in covenant integrity God did not just give Himself to us in some kind of reluctant religious way or in just some kind of inferior, meaningless, religious philosophy No. He gave His heart to us: His commitment, in covenant integrity He gave Himself to us: His devotion, His care, His whole heart, His everything, in covenant commitment, in covenant integrity as if He could not be trusted. And so in the New Covenant, as opposed to the Old Covenant which was between God and Man, in the New Covenant we discover that the second party is now God Himself. He swore by Himself, by His own being, incarnate in a human body Being our original blueprint and now also one with the human race in the incarnation, this Jesus forever became our inseparable representative. Deity took upon Himself humanity to become our inseparable surety. He became the surety of our eternal union with God Jesus, through the incarnation and then the resurrection, thus became the security of our union with God for all eternity. Isn't that wonderful?
