Описание:

Important both for political theorists and for womens studies. She explores with great care and thoroughness the connections between nineteenth century feminist argument and activism on the one hand, and familiar liberal principles of justice and equality on the other - Nannerl 0. Keohane, Wellesley College

Traditional studies of the womens movement in Victorian England focused on the battle for suffrage and other public rights. In this new study, however, Mary Lyndon Shanlev explores how Victorian women campaigned to reform the laws which related to marriage and the married state.
Arguing that without a fundamental transformation of the marriage relationship there would be no justice for women, they fought a series of campaigns to change laws governing divorce, married womens property, infanticide, protective labour legislation, child custody, wife abuse, marital rape and the restitution of conjugal rights.
Women involved in these campaigns exposed the connection between the privileged position of men in both public and private life and the reluctance of Parliament to enact the reforms women sought. In a series of case studies Shanley explores the demands of the reformers, and the response of Parliament.
In an Epilogue, Shanley warns of the dangers to liberal feminism in relying exclusively on equal rights in the law as a formula for change.

Описание: Queen Victoria is often cast as a foe of the women`s movement; she famously declared women`s rights to be a `mad, wicked folly`. Arianne Chernock analyses the ruler`s surprising role in the women`s movement and reveals Victoria as a ruler who captivated nineteenth-century feminists, with profound cultural and political consequences.

Описание: Focusing on the ways in which female novelists have, in their creative work, challenged or scrutinised contemporary assumptions about their own sex, this book's critical interest in women’s fiction shows how mid-nineteenth-century women writers confront the conflict between the pressures of matrimonial ideologies and the often more attractive alternative of single or professional life. In arguing that the tensions and dualities of their work represent the honest confrontation of their own ambivalence rather than attempted conformity to convention, it calls for a fresh look at patterns of imaginative representation in Victorian women’s literature. Making extensive use of letters and non-fiction, this study relates the opinions expressed there to the themes and methods of the fictional narratives. The first chapter outlines the social and ideological framework within which the authors were writing; the subsequent five chapters deal with the individual novelists, Craik, Charlotte Bronte, Sewell, Gaskell, and Eliot, examining the works of each and also pointing to the similarities between them, thus suggesting a shared female ‘voice’. Dealing with minor writers as well as better-known figures, it opens up new areas of critical investigation, claiming not only that many nineteenth-century female novelists have been undeservedly neglected but also that the major ones are further illuminated by being considered alongside their less familiar contemporaries.

Описание:

In the nineteenth century, a woman who could prove a man had broken his promise to marry her was legally entitled to compensation for damages. Bridging the gap between history and literature, Ginger S. Frost offers an in-depth examination of these breaches of promise and compares actual with fictional cases. Althought the most important factor in determining the outcome of such trials was gender, class was also vital in assessing the suitability of mates. Promises Broken highlights the courtship practices of lower- and middle- class Victorians, a group much neglected in previous scholarship.

Описание:

Adultery, impotence, and a cruel cross-examination all in the context of a famous bank failure, this precedent setting case, fueled by a fight to control a sizeable inheritance, recounts Bella's struggle to claim her own body, life and fortune from her husband and a misogynistic legal system.

Bella: An Exploration of a Victorian Annulment of Marriage Appeal Record of Gordon v. Merricks to the House of Lords Containing Witness Transcripts, Legal Pleadings, Documentary Evidence, and Appeal Court Decisions; with Annotations, Analysis, and Additional Material from the Time gives readers an accurate view into an unhappy marriage and the court cases resulting from it.

Bella explores and explains an Appeal Record to the House of Lords, functioning as the highest appeal court in the United Kingdom in 1885. To explain Bella's case to modern readers, the author provides detailed annotations to the text of the Appeal Record, including the many witness transcripts, as well as other documents from the time.

News articles and much legal research help modern readers understand how Bella's fortune was at risk of being squandered by her husband. This effort reveals the legal machinations perpetrated by Bella's husband and his lawyers as well as the excellent brief her own lawyers provide. Four decisions from the House of Lords are also presented with detailed annotations so modern readers may discern the results of both sides' arguments.

Several essays detail the context of the time including the failure of the City of Glasgow Bank, famous in its day for being the first case where bank officers went to jail for concealing very large unpaid loans to insiders and their favorite businesses. The development of judicial objectivity is examined in the context of Bella's case.

The author provides an Epilogue detailing, in some instances, the day to day turmoil of Bella's life.

Описание: Often when people have become alienated from their religious backgrounds, they access their traditions through lifecycle events such as marriage. At times, modern values such as gender equality may be at odds with some of the traditions; many of which have always been in a state of flux in relationship to changing social, economic and political realities. Traditional Jewish marriage is based on the man acquiring the woman, which has symbolic and actual ramifications. Grounded in the traditional texts yet accessible, this book shows how the marriage is an acquisition and contextualises the gender hierarchy of marriage within the rabbinic exclusion of women from Torah study, the highest cultural practice and women's exemption from positive commandments. Melanie Landau offers two alternative models of partnership that partially or fully bypass the non-reciprocity of traditional Jewish marriage and that have their basis in the ancient rabbinic texts.

Описание: Author and Printer in Victorian England demonstrates that printing technology shapes texts. The technology involved was a nineteenth-century revolution in printing methods; the texts were classic literary works by Victorian authors. What was at stake was textual control: who would decide how the text would read-author, compositor, printer's reader, or publisher? In a unique fusion of literary history and printing history, Allan C. Dooley explores the interactions between individual authors and their publishers and printers. He takes the reader through each stage of a work's development, illustrating how authors attempted to perfect and protect their writings from compositional manuscript through stereotyped reprints. His analysis includes details of a wide range of technical innovations and changes in practices in the printing of books between the development of printing machines in the 1830s and 1840s and the introduction of the Linotype in the 1890s. Drawing on the experiences of leading Victorian authors, he shows how nineteenth-century printing practices both enhanced and diminished writers' abilities to control texts. He reveals that much more was under their control than has commonly been believed and that many authors took advantage of printing technologies in order to gain and maintain control over the texts of their works. But new kinds of errors and new sources of inaccuracy were introduced by the technology as well.
