Автор: Gavin Parkinson Название: Robert Rauschenberg and Surrealism: Art, `Sensibility` and War in the 1960s ISBN: 1501358294 ISBN-13(EAN): 9781501358296 Издательство: Bloomsbury Academic Рейтинг: Цена: 95040.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: The art of Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) is usually viewed as quite distinct from Surrealism, a movement which the artist himself displayed some hostility towards. However, Rauschenberg had a very positive reception among Surrealists, particularly across the period 1959-69.In the face of Rauschenberg’s avowals of his own ‘literalism’ and insistence on his art as ‘facts,’ this book gathers generous evidence of the poetic, metaphorical, allusive, associative and connotative dimensions of the artist's oeuvre as identified by Surrealists, and thus extrapolates new readings from Rauschenberg's key works on that basis. By viewing Rauschenberg’s art against the expansion of the cultural influence of the United States in Europe in the period after the Second World War and the increasingly politicized activities of the Surrealists in the era of the Algerian War of Independence (1954-62), Robert Rauschenberg and Surrealism shows how poetic inference of the artist’s work was turned towards political interpretation. By analysing Rauschenberg’s art in the context of Surrealism, and drawing from it new interpretations and perspectives, this volume simultaneously situates the Surrealist movement in 1960s American art criticism and history.

Описание: Although Pablo Picasso spotted Dora Maar at a cafe in January 1936 it is highly likely that she had come to his attention prior. As Brassai, a Hungarian-French photographer, recalled, It was at Les Deux-Magots that, one day in autumn 1935, [he] met Dora On an earlier day, he had already noticed the grave, drawn face of the young woman at a nearby table, the attentive look in her light-colored eyes, sometimes disturbing in its fixity. When Picasso saw her in the same cafe in the company of the surrealist poet Paul Eluard, who knew her, the poet introduced her to Picasso (Brassai, a.k.a. Gyula Halasz, Conversations with Picasso [University of Chicago Press, 1999]). Tinged with a seductive mix of violence and dark eroticism, this first meeting has attained mythical status in the story of the artists life. It reads like an unreal fantasy. A mysterious and feline beauty, which Man Ray had captured in the pictures he took of her, a companion of Georges Bataille, Dora was an accomplished photographer, close to the Surrealists revolutionary aesthetics. Picasso addressed her in French, which he assumed to be her language; she replied in Spanish, which she knew to be his. For the next decade, the painter would translate not just his fascination with the woman who had seduced him on the spot, but also his desire to escape the grip of someone who, for the first time, could intellectually aspire to be his equal. Dora would appear in his works as a female Minotaur, a Sphinx, a lunar goddess and a muse. Because of her intense artistic sensibility, her poetic gifts and her ability to participate in suffering, she was especially qualified to resonate Picassos own inner torments during these troubled years.

Автор: Kim Socha Название: Women, Destruction, and the Avant-Garde: A Paradigm for Animal Liberation ISBN: 9042034238 ISBN-13(EAN): 9789042034235 Издательство: Brill Цена: 95630.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: This interdisciplinary study fuses analysis of feminist literature and manifestos, radical political theory, critical vanguard studies, women’s performance art, and popular culture to argue for the animal liberation movement as successor to the liberationist visions of the early twentieth-century avant-gardes, most especially the Surrealists. These vanguard groups are judiciously critiqued for their refusal to confront their own misogyny, a quandary that continues to plague animal activists, thereby disallowing for cohesion and full recognition of women’s value within a culturally marginalized cause. This volume is of interest to anyone who is concerned about the continued—indeed, escalating—violence against nonhumans. More broadly, it will interest those seeking new pathways to challenge the dominant power constructions through which oppression of humans, nonhumans, and the environment thrives. Women, Destruction, and the Avant-Garde ultimately poses the animal liberation movement as having serious political and cultural implications for radical social change, destruction of hierarchy and for a world without shackles and cages, much as the Surrealists envisioned.
Автор: Roger Rothman Название: Tiny Surrealism: Salvador Dali and the Aesthetics of the Small ISBN: 0803280882 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780803280885 Издательство: Mare Nostrum (Eurospan) Рейтинг: Цена: 29260.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание:
Though one of the most popular artists of the twentieth century, Salvador Dalн is typically seen as peripheral to the dominant practices of modernist painting. Roger Rothman's Tiny Surrealism argues that this marginal position is itself a coherent response to modernism. It demonstrates how Dalн's practice was organized around the logic of the inconsequential by focusing on Dalн's identification with things that are literally tiny (ants, sewing needles, breadcrumbs, blackheads, etc.) as well as those that are metaphorically small (the trivial, the weak, the superficial, and the anachronistic). In addition to addressing the imagery of Dalн's paintings, Tiny Surrealism demonstrates that the logic of the small was a fundamental factor in Dalн's adherence to the techniques of miniaturist illusionism. Long derided as antimodernist and kitsch, Rothman demonstrates that Dalн's style was itself a strategy of the small aimed at subverting the dominant values of modern painting.
Tiny Surrealism not only examines Dalн's pictorial work, it also probes the artist's many public pronouncements and private correspondences. By attending to the peculiarities of Dalн's technique and examining overlooked aspects of his writings, Tiny Surrealism is the first study to detail his deliberate subversion of modernist orthodoxies.
