Описание: Once hailed as 'the eternal state', the Ottoman Empire was in decline by the end of the nineteenth century, finally collapsing under the pressures of World War I. Yet its legacies are still apparent, and few have had more impact than those of its schools and educational policies. "Empire and Education under the Ottomans" analyses the Empire's educational politics from the mid-nineteenth century, amidst the Tanzimat reform period, until "The Young Turk Revolution in 1908". Through a focus on the regional impact of decrees from Istanbul, Emine O. Evered unravels the complexities of the era, demonstrating how educational changes devised to strengthen the Empire actually hastened its demise. This book is the first history of education in the Ottoman Middle East to evaluate policies in the context of local responses and resistance, and includes the first published English translation of the watershed 1869 Ottoman Education Law. A stimulating and impressively-researched study, it represents an important new addition to the historiography of the Ottoman Empire and will be essential for those researching its lasting legacy.

Описание: Multiple Cities, Multiple Subjectivities in the Contemporary African American Novel: Discursive Practices of Whiteness in Everyday Urban Encounters examines the post-1990s African American novels, namely the "neo-urban novel," developing a new urban discourse for the 21st century on how the city as a social formation impacts black characters through everyday discursive practices of whiteness. The critique of everyday life in a racial context is o important in considering diverse forms of the lived reality of black everyday life in the novelistic representations of the white dominant urban order. Even if the African American novels, studied in this book, are not all published in post-9/11, they help us see where the lack of interactional social relations has led Americans to where they are, namely the culture of fear, seeing all people of color as an ominous threat. African American fictional representations of the city have political significance in that the "neo-urban novel" explores the nature, indeed the very possibility of a dialogic communication with the American society at large. The book explores the need to understand how whiteness works, what it forecloses, and what it occasionally opens up in everyday life in American society. The book consists of seven chapters on Walter Mosley s Devil in a Blue Dress (1990) and Little Scarlet (2004), John Edgar Wideman s Two Cities (1998), Percival Everett s I am Not Sidney Poitier (2009), Martha Southgate s The Fall of Rome (2002), Asha Bandele s Daughter (2003), and Michael Thomas Man Gone Down (2007) that explore how the strategic employment of blackness can offer ways of subverting the discursive power of the white embodied self. These novels also probe how the relationship of a white person to his/her own self changes, once s/he is undone, and becomes, to a certain extent unknowable. All in all, it is impossible to erase the color-lines by all means in the US as much as across the globe, but this book may contribute to finding new ways/strategies of deconstructing, hopefully unconstructing in the long run, racial hierarchies in an attempt to expand the boundaries of the ongoing critique of racism, neocolonialism, and globalization (built upon the white supremacist vision) in the 20th and 21st centuries.

Описание: How have attempts to integrate Turkish agriculture into the global economy impacted rural populations? This book reveals the extent to which the increasingly authoritarian political regime in Turkey, and the neoliberal economy, impacts minority ethnic groups and women. The tomato industry in Turkey has the highest export rate amongst fresh and processed fruit and vegetables. But Emine Erdogan shows here that global production is gendered, relying on the labour of unpaid or poorly paid women and based on a system of what she calls ‘intersectional patriarchy’. The book is based on participant observation and interviews to foreground the stories of the those involved in production, including local rural workers, Kurdish seasonal migrant workers, women factory workers and factory managers, as well as the landowning families. This provides a detailed picture of the transformation of rural Turkey and the inequalities of gender, class, ethnicity and age. A detailed ethnographic account, the book in unique in providing an intersectional and feminist analysis on processes of capitalization.

Описание:

The first study of album-making in the Ottoman empire during the seventeenth century, demonstrating the period's experimentation, eclecticism, and global outlook

The Album of the World Emperor examines an extraordinary piece of art: an album of paintings, drawings, calligraphy, and European prints compiled for the Ottoman sultan Ahmed I (r. 1603-17) by his courtier Kalender Paşa (d. 1616). In this detailed study of one of the most important works of seventeenth-century Ottoman art, Emine Fetvacı uses the album to explore questions of style, iconography, foreign inspiration, and the very meaning of the visual arts in the Islamic world.

The album's thirty-two folios feature artworks that range from intricate paper cutouts to the earliest examples of Islamic genre painting, and contents as eclectic as Persian and Persian-influenced calligraphy, studies of men and women of different ethnicities and backgrounds, depictions of popular entertainment and urban life, and European prints depicting Christ on the cross that in turn served as models for apocalyptic Ottoman paintings. Through the album, Fetvacı sheds light on imperial ideals as well as relationships between court life and popular culture, and shows that the boundaries between Ottoman art and the art of Iran and Western Europe were much more porous than has been assumed. Rather than perpetuating the established Ottoman idiom of the sixteenth century, the album shows that this was a time of openness to new models, outside sources, and fresh forms of expression.

Beautifully illustrated and featuring all the folios of the original seventy-page album, The Album of the World Emperor revives a neglected yet significant artwork to demonstrate the distinctive aesthetic innovations of the Ottoman court.
