Описание: An embouchure is the way in which a wind musician applies their mouth to an instruments mouthpiece, and Embouchure, Emilia Phillipss fourth poetry collection, sets its mouth, ready to play. Trumpeting a picaresque coming out story, the poems are at turns self-deprecatory and revelatory, exploring sexual fluidity and non-monosexuality. From the speakers adolescent crushes to her closeted 20s to her eventual acceptance of queerness, her disarming joy--even at her own mistakes--is cut with challenges to toxic masculinity and reckonings with anticipatory anxiety. The tomboy the speaker once was is transfigured into a presexual soft butch / Medusa with a beautiful, beautiful / body that didnt know yet // how to contain itself. Elsewhere, the speaker evades a Dickinsonian personification of Death, who seems more like an inescapable ex-boyfriend than a welcome bridegroom. Phillipss mock-confessionalism is as brassy as it is vulnerable.

Описание: The poems of Empty Clip bore into the cultures of violence in the United States while candidly cross-firing upon the poets' complicity and testifying on these cultures' effects upon female body image and mental health.

From a meditation about a bullet hole-animated PowerPoint presentation on campus shooters to the startled invective against an unprovoked dick pic, lyrics brooding upon illness-driven suicidal thoughts to narratives about a slippery memory of childhood abuse, Emilia Phillips's third poetry collection sears with the angry love of self to find some truth that's nevertheless a broken bone that can't be / set.
