Four decades of multimedia exploits in race, art politics and subjectivity: a long-overdue survey on conceptual performance artist Lorraine O'Grady
Conceptual performance artist Lorraine O'Grady burst into the contemporary art world in 1980 dressed in a gown made of 180 pairs of white gloves and wielding a chrysanthemum-studded whip. For the next three years, O'Grady documented her exploits as this incendiary fictional persona, visiting gallery openings and providing critiques of the racial politics at play in the New York art scene. The resulting series, Mlle Bourgeoise Noire, was merely the beginning of a long career of avant-garde work that would continue to build upon O'Grady's conceptions of self and subjectivity as seen from the perspective of a Black woman artist. This survey of O'Grady's work spans four decades of her career and features nearly all of her major projects, as well as Announcement, the opening series of a new performance piece seven years in the making. Contextualized by an extensive timeline with letters, journal entries and interviews, Both/And provides a long-overdue close examination of O'Grady's artistic and intellectual ambitions.
Before she became an artist at the age of 45, Lorraine O'Grady (born 1934) worked as an intelligence analyst for the United States government, a translator, and a rock music critic for the Village Voice and Rolling Stone. O'Grady's unique life experiences, as well as her identity as a diasporic subject, have informed her multidisciplinary practice across live performance, video, photomontage, public art and cultural criticism. She is represented by Alexander Gray Associates, New York.

Описание: This is the first critical study of feminist practices of ‘speaking out’ in response to rape. This book argues that feminist anti-rape politics are characterised by a belief in the transformative potential of women’s personal narratives of sexual violence. The political mobilisation of these narratives has been an incredibly successful strategy, but one with unresolved ethical questions and political limitations. The book explores both the successes and the unresolved questions through feminist archival materials, published narratives of sexual violence, and mass media and internet sources. It argues that that a rethinking of the role and place of women’s stories and the politics of speaking out is vital for a rethinking of feminist politics around sexual violence and key to fresh approaches to combating this violence.
Essential reading for career-minded women at all stages of their careers, Blazing Trails will inspire you to own your power, aim for greatness and blaze your own trails.
A woman and visible minority who rose up the executive ranks of the male-dominated oil and gas industry, Levonne Louie has lived her life as a trailblazer--but, as she confesses in her new memoir, Blazing Trails, it took her time to own that title.
In this frank reflection on her personal and professional journey, Levonne shares the valuable insights she has gained through a lifetime of living life on her own terms--from challenging her family's traditional values and embracing life as a single mother, to devoting herself to a career in a male-dominated field.
The book is cleverly divided into two sections--in the first, Levonne gives a chronological recounting of her life, and in the second, she shares the gems of wisdom she has collected along the way. Whether Levonne's relating a story about resisting her family's traditional values or encouraging other women to embrace their self-worth, she weaves common threads of perseverance, resilience, and courage throughout the pages of Blazing Trails.

Описание: Examines student movements in the American south to grasp the nature of activism in the region during the turbulent 1960s. Examining the activism of black and white students, Jeffrey A. Turner shows that the South responded to national developments but that the response had its own trajectory - one that was rooted in race.
