Ben Hunnicutt encounters a bit of war, a bit of peace, a little time in a Japanese Geisha house, a week at an exclusive Alaska fishing lodge, a bit of stumbling around in the mountains, and a very interesting bear.
The fourth book in the Ben Hunnicutt series, "The Last Kill", Ben has left Alaska and "Operation Washtub" to continue his interrupted journey to the battlefields of Korea. It is 1953; both sides have emerged from a frigid winter of slugging it out on a line near the 38th parallel while endless peace negotiations drone on at a small camp at Panmunjom. Ben sees his fair share of battle, broken by a brief interlude in Japan which plays an important part in his later life.
A wound sends him back to the States just as the war ends in July 1953, and he serves out the remainder of his twenty years never having the good fortune to be again assigned to Alaska. Upon retirement in 1967 he keeps a promise to himself and moves to Anchorage, at last able to explore the state which so fascinated him on his first visit.
In 1972, retired and at leisure, he is mysteriously contacted by an intelligence officer that he befriended while on R & R in Japan during the Korean war. The Vietnam War is in full swing, and the stability of the South Vietnamese government is being threatened by a large-scale sacking of the nation's treasury. The stolen gold is apparently being smuggled to mining operations in Alaska where it is "laundered" and converted to cash. Ben is asked to ferret out the rogue miners so the government can move in and return the looted gold to the treasury of South Vietnam. As usual, the task is more complex and more dangerous than it seems. Ben must call on some of his offbeat friends to see him through.
Don Neal, author of the Ben Hunnicutt novels, is a retired soldier. Reared in Suffolk and in Surry County in southern Virginia, he dropped out of the College of William and Mary and enlisted in the Army after the Chinese entered the Korean War in late 1950. His 28 years of service encompassed nearly the entire Cold War, taking him to Japan, Germany, Korea, and Alaska. He has served in the Infantry, Artillery, Armor, and Air Defense Missile branches. His last ten years of service were with the Nike Hercules Air Defense Missile units protecting the Anchorage and Fairbanks population and military centers against Soviet bomber attack during the Cold War.
He and his family have lived in Anchorage, Alaska, for over 50 years. His hobbies include military history and the research and study of antique and historical firearms--with an occasional foray into drag racing.
His four novels reflect Alaska as a Territory, then as a raw new state before it was transformed and modernized by the discovery of oil and the building of the Trans-Alaska Oil Pipeline.

Ben Hunnicutt's planned 'together time' in Alaska with FBI Agent Liz Nichole is interrupted by her recall to Norfolk, Virginia to work a major dope smuggling case. He reluctantly accompanies her, expecting a romantic interlude, and finds that the smugglers are operating on the lands and rivers where he grew up.
His familiarity with the local people and countryside are utilized by the FBI to help in cracking the smuggling ring. During the round-up, Ben causes the death of one of a pair of murderous Irish twins who were ringleaders of the smuggling gang.
On his return to Alaska, he learns that the surviving twin has escaped prison and is stalking him with vengeance in mind. His stalker is an explosives and bomb-making expert, and devises various diabolical threats designed to keep Ben in a state of fearful anxiety.
FBI Agent Liz returns to Alaska to help contrive a trap, using Ben as bait, to apprehend the escaped murderer before he can carry out his scheme. The wary killer manages to stay a step ahead of his hunters, and seems destined to achieve his goal of destroying Ben. The culmination of the plot gives new meaning to the Shakespearean quotation, "Hoist by his own petard."
