Our evolutionary ancestors once possessed the ability to intuit what food their bodies needed, in what proportions, and ate the right things in the proper amounts--perfect nutritional harmony. From wild baboons to gooey slime molds, most every living organism instinctually knows how to balance their diets, except modern-day humans. When and why did we lose this ability, and how can we get it back?
David Raubenheimer and Stephen Simpson reveal the answers to these questions in a gripping tale of evolutionary biology and nutritional science, based upon years of groundbreaking research. Their colorful scientific journey takes readers across the globe, from the foothills of Cape Town, to the deserts of Arizona, to a state-of-the-art research center in Sydney. Readers will encounter locusts, mice and even gorillas along the way as the scientists test their hypotheses on various members of the animal kingdom.
This epic scientific adventure culminates in a unifying theory of nutrition that has profound implications for our current epidemic of metabolic diseases and obesity. Raubenheimer and Simpson ultimately offer useful advice to understand the unwanted side effects of fad diets, gain control over one's food environment, and see that delicious and healthy are integral parts of proper eating.

In contemporary South Africa, power no longer maps neatly onto race. While white South Africans continue to enjoy considerable power at the top levels of industry, they have become a demographic minority, politically subordinate to the black South African population. To be white today means having to adjust to a new racial paradigm. In this book, Jacob Boersema argues that this adaptation requires nothing less than unlearning racism: confronting the shame of a racist past, acknowledging privilege, and, to varying degrees, rethinking notions of nationalism. Drawing on more than 150 interviews with a cross-section of white South Africans--representationally diverse in age, class, and gender--Boersema details how they understand their whiteness and depicts the limits and possibilities of individual, and collective, transformation. He reveals that the process of unlearning racism entails dismantling psychological and institutional structures alike, all of which are inflected by emotion and shaped by ideas of culture and power. Can We Unlearn Racism? pursues a question that should be at the forefront of every society's collective consciousness. Theoretically rich and ethnographically empathetic, this book offers valuable insights into the broader sociological process of unlearning, relevant today to communities all around the world.
What drives the human appetite? Two leading scientists share their cutting-edge research (with an emphasis on the role protein plays) to show how we can gain control over what, when, and how much we eat.
Summary Of How to Change Your Mind: What the New Science of Psychedelics Teaches Us About Consciousness, Dying, Addiction, Depression, and Transcendence By Michael Pollan - Book Summary - Anthony Young
In the book "How To Change Your Mind," Michael Pollan traces the eventful history of psychedelics, from Hofmann's first encounter with LSD to the first surge of research into the field, to the widespread abuse and misuse followed by a federal government ban, and the recent resurrection of psychedelic research. Psychedelics are probably the world's most controversial class of drugs and in this book, he narrates how they got their reputation.
Pollan is careful to correct the popular conclusion that Timothy Leary was the beginning and end of psychedelics. The author's depth of research is obvious as he chronicles the lives and contributions of scientists, therapists, religious leaders, and countless others who have a place in the psychedelics story.
This book contains a comprehensive, well detailed summary and key takeaways of the original book by Michael Pollan. It summarizes the book in detail, to help people effectively understand, articulate and imbibe the original work by Pollan. This book is not meant to replace the original book but to serve as a companion to it
Contained is an Executive Summary of the original book Key Points of each chapter and Brief chapter-by-chapter summaries

Through the pages of How to Change Your Mind, you'll experience an entirely new way of looking at the world and the way that things occur within the world. There are plenty of different experiences out there that can and should be explored, and psychedelics could be the way that these experiences are best explored. Michael Pollan looks at different research that has been done throughout a range of different fields, including depression, addiction and "healthy normal" and seeks to find a way that psychedelics could be the answer to the question of how to change our world and improve our sense of "normal."
The researchers are discussed here with reference to some of the patients who have participated in their experiments and been helped in different ways. These patients feel they have been cured, and some of them recognize that they have only improved moderately, but still, all seem to see a difference. There are skeptics and more and even several firsthand accounts of Pollan's experiences and the ones that he has garnered from others. No matter what may be happening in the world at large, there may be a future for psychedelics in changing that future and improving the mental health of all of those around us at the same time.
By exploring each of these types of research Pollan hopes to understand whether psychedelics should be evaluated further and whether the current laws restricting them as Schedule 1 narcotics from the FDA are something that should be reevaluated as well. He seeks, through the course of this book, to evaluate the important nature of psychedelics and all of the things that they have been able to do throughout history as well as throughout different stages of the recent past and even what may happen in the future. Through this process, it's possible to think about the ways that psychedelics and the experiences that occur as a result of them may just be the answer that modern medicine is looking for or could at least hold the key to something different about our consciousness.

Описание: The newspapers around the country reported a famous preacher`s comment about social drinking. He said, "I do not believe that the Bible teaches teetotalism. I can`t; Jesus drank wine. Jesus turned water into wine at a wedding feast. That wasn`t grape juice, as some of them try to claim." This is false as false can be.
