There is a saying in the Space exploration business that we stand on the shoulders of giants. Mike Fox was one of those giants. During the Gemini and Apollo programs when tests to be performed were too dangerous or too great a risk for the Astronauts, Mike would be the first to volunteer. He was a test subject in every space suit before it flew in space. Mike touched so many lives at the Johnson Space Center that we will never know the magnitude of the positive impact he made and his contribution to exploration of Space. He dedicated his life to his country from his service in the Korean War and the Vietnam War as a combat medic, to his 36 years at NASA. Mike was truly part of the greatest generation. In the end it was his exposure to Agent Orange that caused the closure of Mike's extraordinary life. --Ronald Lee, Office of Emergency Management, NASA Johnson Space Center
Mike Fox's wonderful, dry sense of humor and his fearless love of adventure were famous among the astronauts, but my strongest memory of Mike was his tireless obsession to train as many of our JSC folks as possible to perform CPR. He lobbied long, hard and successfully to have AED defibrillators installed in every building at JSC, and to have an adequate number of people certified to use them. He trained countless JSC employees, and all the astronauts, to perform CPR, and that training saved lives on several occasions. When my first grandchildren were born, he volunteered on the weekend to train my entire family on proper resuscitation techniques for newborn babies. Mike's concern for others made him a wonderful role model for everyone. --Michael Coats, former astronaut and Director, NASA Johnson Space Center, 2005 to 2012

Описание: Book & DVD. With the successful repair of the Skylab workshop by Pete Conrads Skylab 2 crew the stage was now set for his fellow Apollo 12 moon walker Alan Bean to lead a full scientific mission to the giant space station. Bean was to be accompanied by two of the next generation of astronauts, Owen Garriott and Jack Lousma. The crew were launched on a Saturn IB on 28 July 1973 for a mission which would last for just short of two months. This would be by far the longest duration mission ever attempted by the United States. Just as the previous mission had required space walks, Skylab 3 would also see the crew venture outside on three separate occasions. The experience gained from these early repair missions would be of incalculable value to the future of manned space exploration. Having secured the station and completed the repairs begun by Conrads crew, Bean, Lousma and Garriott conducted an intensive series of experiments on themselves and on behalf of students back on Earth. They also began the serious study of our home planet through the Skylab Earth Resources Experiment Package and undertook meaningful studies of the Sun using the Apollo Telescope Mount. Many of the paradigms for life aboard the International Space Station began right here with the flight of Skylab 3. Monitoring the crews reaction to long duration exposure to micro-gravity, watching the effect on small organisms, carefully studying the earths ecosphere, looking out into deep space with the benefit of clear skies and generally learning whether humanity could withstand the rigors of long missions away from the Earth. In this book you will discover everything from the minutiae of complex experiments to the human face of some of the earliest true space residents. Once again the enormous Skylab workshop would provide them with a home.

Come Fly with Us is the story of an elite group of space travelers who flew as members of many space shuttle crews from pre-Challenger days to Columbia in 2003. Not part of the regular NASA astronaut corps, these professionals known as “payload specialists” came from a wide variety of backgrounds and were chosen for an equally wide variety of scientific, political, and national security reasons. Melvin Croft and John Youskauskas focus on this special fraternity of spacefarers and their individual reflections on living and working in space. Relatively unknown to the public and often flying only single missions, these payload specialists give the reader an unusual perspective on the experience of human spaceflight. The authors also bring to light NASA’s struggle to integrate the wide-ranging personalities and professions of these men and women into the professional astronaut ranks.
While Come Fly with Us relates the experiences of the payload specialists up to and including the Challenger tragedy, the authors also detail the later high-profile flights of a select few, including Barbara Morgan, John Glenn (who returned to space at the age of seventy-seven), and Ilan Ramon of Israel aboard Columbia on its final, fatal flight, STS-107.

On October 1, 1958, the world's first civilian space agency opened for business as an emergency response to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik a year earlier. Within a decade, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, universally known as NASA, had evolved from modest research teams experimenting with small converted rockets into one of the greatest technological and managerial enterprises ever known, capable of sending people to the Moon aboard gigantic rockets and of dispatching robot explorers to Venus, Mars, and worlds far beyond. In spite of occasional, tragic setbacks in NASA's history, the Apollo lunar landing project remains a byword for American ingenuity; the winged space shuttles spearheaded the International Space Station and a dazzling array of astronomical satellites and robotic landers, and Earth observation programs have transformed our understanding of the cosmos and our home world's fragile place within it.
Throughout NASA's 60-year history, images have played a central role. Who today is not familiar with the Hubble Space Telescope's mesmerizing views of the universe or the pin-sharp panoramas of Mars from NASA's surface rovers? And who could forget the photographs of the first men walking on the Moon?
Researched with the collaboration of NASA, this collection gathers more than 400 historic photographs and rare concept renderings, scanned and remastered using the latest technology and reproduced in extra-large size. Texts by science and technology journalist Piers Bizony, former NASA chief historian Roger Launius, and best-selling Apollo historian Andrew Chaikin--and an extensive mission checklist documenting the key human and robotic missions--round out this comprehensive exploration of NASA, from its earliest days to its current development of new space systems for the future. The NASA Archives is more than just a fascinating pictorial history of the U.S. space program. It is also a profound meditation on why we choose to explore space and how we will carry on this grandest of all adventures in the years to come.
