Автор: Lino E. Silva Moisйs Название: Minoritarian Liberalism: A Travesti Life in a Brazilian Favela ISBN: 022681825X ISBN-13(EAN): 9780226818252 Издательство: Wiley Рейтинг: Цена: 87360.00 T Наличие на складе: Есть у поставщика Поставка под заказ. Описание: A mesmerizing ethnography of the largest favela in Rio, where residents articulate their own politics of freedom against the backdrop of multiple forms of oppression. Normative liberalism has promoted the freedom of privileged subjects, those entitled to rights--usually white, adult, heteronormative, and bourgeois--at the expense of marginalized groups, such as Black people, children, LGBTQ people, and slum dwellers. In this visceral ethnography of Rocinha, the largest favela in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Moisйs Lino e Silva explores what happens when liberalism is challenged by people whose lives are impaired by normative understandings of liberty. He calls such marginalized visions of freedom "minoritarian liberalism," a concept that stands in for overlapping, alternative modes of freedom--be they queer, favela, or peasant. Lino e Silva introduces readers to a broad collective of favela residents, most intimately accompanying Natasha Kellem, a charismatic self-declared travesti (a term used in Latin America to indicate a specific form of female gender construction opposite to the sex assigned at birth). While many of those the author meets consider themselves "queer," others are treated as "abnormal" simply because they live in favelas. Through these interconnected experiences, Lino e Silva not only pushes at the boundaries of anthropological inquiry, but also offers ethnographic evidence of non-normative routes to freedom for those seeking liberties against the backdrop of capitalist exploitation, transphobia, racism, and other patterns of domination.

This publication is a bilingual collection of Dreamtime poems, originally written in Italian by Lino Concas, born in Gonnosfanadiga (Sardinia, Italy), and accompanied by English translation by John Gatt-Rutter. The poems express the poet's fascination and identification with the age-old culture of Australia's Aborigines known as Dreaming or Dreamtime and the traumas of white settlement. They are unlike any other poetry about the Aboriginal experience, whether written by Aborigines or non-Aborigines of any ethnic origin, and are a unique creation both thematically and in their poetic language. The poems will be backed up with Dreamtime photography and informative material, including the Prime Minister Kevin Rudd's 2008 "Sorry Speech" about the Stolen Generation. This publication aims at making a wide impact among both Italophone and non-italophone readers, and goes beyond a simple reading of poetry.

Culture and conflict inevitably go hand in hand. The very idea of culture is marked by the notion of difference and by the creative, fraught interaction between conflicting concepts and values. The same can be said of all key ideas in the study of culture, such as identity and diversity, memory and trauma, the translation of cultures and globalization, dislocation and emplacement, mediation and exclusion. This series publishes theoretically informed original scholarship from the fields of literary and cultural studies as well as media, visual, and film studies. It fosters an interdisciplinary dialogue on the multiple ways in which conflict supports and constrains the production of meaning, on how conflict is represented, how it relates to the past and projects the present, and how it frames scholarship within the humanities.
