Описание: Thermopylae, Salamis. These Ancient Greek hoplite battles are known to a wider audience, if only as names. This book contains a list of ten, not so well-known Ancient Greek battles that as in the case of Eyremedon for instance, corroborated the results of the Persian Wars. Some others like the battles of Hyampolis and Delion are the first recordings of military innovations that have their uses even in modern battlefields. This title narrates also how Ancient Greek commanders used ingenuity and tactics to overcome overwhelming odds and annihilate the enemy instead of fighting a battle of attrition.

Описание: Agrometeorology or Agricultural Meteorology involves the integration of climatological and meteorological data and techniques into agricultural problems, such as crop production, soil moisture, moisture stress, and migration of pests. Agrometeorology is the study and use of weather and climate information to enhance or expand agricultural crops and/or to increase crop production. Agrometeorology mainly involves the interaction of meteorological and hydrological factors, on one hand and agriculture, which encompasses horticulture, animal husbandry, and forestry. It is an interdisciplinary, holistic science forming a bridge between physical and biological sciences and beyond. It deals with a complex system involving soil, plant, atmosphere, agricultural management options, and others, which are interacting dynamically on various spatial and temporal scales. Specifically, the fully coupled soil-plant-atmosphere system has to be well understood in order to develop reasonable operational applications or recommendations for stakeholders. For these reasons, a comprehensive analysis of cause-effect relationships and principles that describe the influence of the state of the atmosphere, plants, and soil on different aspects of agricultural production, as well as the nature and importance of feedback between these elements of the system is necessary. Agrometeorological methods therefore use information and data from different key sciences such as soil physics and chemistry, hydrology, meteorology, crop and animal physiology and phenology, agronomy, and others. Observed information is often combined in more or less complex models, focused on various components of system parts such as mass balances, biomass production, crop growth and yield, and crop or pest phenology in order to detect sensitivities or potential responses of the soil-biosphere-atmosphere system. This book entitled Agrometeorology emphasizes on the application of meteorological information and data to weather sensitive problems of agriculture.

Описание: Plant Biochemistry is the study of chemical processes within and relating to living organisms. Plant Biochemistry is not only an important field of basic science explaining the molecular function of a plant, but is also an applied science that is in the position to contribute to the solution of agricultural and pharmaceutical problems. Plant biochemistry is an important emerging field in the agricultural sciences. Basic knowledge of the chemistry and the biochemical mechanisms of the plant in synthesizing various components are essential for advancements needed in other areas of agriculture like plant breeding, plant protection, plant production, etc. Plant Biochemistry is not only an important field of basic science explaining the molecular function of a plant, but is also an applied science that is in the position to contribute to the solution of agricultural and pharmaceutical problems. By controlling information flow through biochemical signaling and the flow of chemical energy through metabolism, biochemical processes give rise to the complexity of life. Over the last 40 years, biochemistry has become so successful at explaining living processes that now almost all areas of the life sciences from botany to medicine are engaged in biochemical research. Today, the main focus of Plant Biochemistry is in understanding how biological molecules give rise to the processes that occur within living cells, which in turn relates greatly to the study and understanding of whole organisms. The book, agricultural plant biochemistry, deals with the cellular and molecular biology and interaction between bimolecules along with the study of photosynthesis, respiration, plant nutrition, plant hormone functions which are associated with plant morphology, ecology and environmental effects on plants. The book is aimed at providing good information to graduate and post-graduate students in agriculture and biology. It will also serve as a valuable tool to researchers in plant breeding, agronomy, plant physiology and plant protection and will come in handy to solve many global problems by the present and future generations.

Описание: Evapotranspiration (ET) is the sum of evaporation and plant transpiration from the Earths land and ocean surface to the atmosphere. Evaporation accounts for the movement of water to the air from sources such as the soil, canopy interception, and water bodies. Transpiration consists of the vaporization of liquid water contained in plant tissues and the vapour removal to the atmosphere. Crops predominately lose their water through stomata. These are small openings on the plant leaf through which gases and water vapour pass. The water, together with some nutrients, is taken up by the roots and transported through the plant. The vaporization occurs within the leaf, namely in the intercellular spaces, and the vapour exchange with the atmosphere is controlled by the stomatal aperture. Nearly all water taken up is lost by transpiration and only a tiny fraction is used within the plant. Energy is required to change the state of the molecules of water from liquid to vapour. Direct solar radiation and, to a lesser extent, the ambient temperature of the air provide this energy. The driving force to remove water vapour from the evaporating surface is the difference between the water vapour pressure at the evaporating surface and that of the surrounding atmosphere. As evaporation proceeds, the surrounding air becomes gradually saturated and the process will slow down and might stop if the wet air is not transferred to the atmosphere. The replacement of the saturated air with drier air depends greatly on wind speed. Hence, solar radiation, air temperature, air humidity and wind speed are climatological parameters to consider when assessing the evaporation process. This book, Evapotranspiration - From Measurements to Agricultural and Environmental Applications, characterizes an overview of the direct measurement techniques of evapotranspiration with related applications to the water use optimization in the agricultural practice and to the ecosystems study. For the optimization of the water use in agriculture, detailed measurements on transpiration demands of crops and different cultivars, as well as results of different irrigation schemes and techniques in semi-arid areas for openfield, greenhouse and potted grown plants are presented. The book provides a tremendous synopsis for both, researchers and students who expect to address these issues.

Описание: Over the past several decades, due to the rapid development of science and technology and the ever-increasing groundwater extraction and contamination, many new theories, methodologies and applications regarding hydraulic conductivity have emerged. Water can move through soil as saturated flow, unsaturated flow, or vapor flow. Saturated flow takes place when the soil pores are completely filled (or saturated) with water. It depends on the intrinsic permeability of the material, the degree of saturation, and on the density and viscosity of the fluid. Unsaturated flow occurs when the larger pores in the soil are filled with air, leaving only the smaller pores to hold and transmit water. Vapor flow occurs as vapor pressure differences develop in relatively dry soils. Vapor migrates from an area of high vapor pressure to an area of low vapor pressure. Hydraulic conductivity is a soil property that describes the ease with which the soil pores permit water (not vapor) movement. It depends on the type of soil, porosity, and the configuration of the soil pores. Hydraulic conductivity is probably the most important hydrogeological parameter, as it governs, along with other parameters, the flow of fluids and migration of contaminants beneath the ground surface, especially in soils and aquifers. The book Hydraulic Conductivity - Issues, Determination and Applications presents comprehensive reviews of new measurements and numerical techniques for estimating hydraulic conductivity.

Описание:

French philosophy changed dramatically in the second quarter of the twentieth century. In the wake of World War I and, later, the Nazi and Soviet disasters, major philosophers such as Koj?ve, Levinas, Heidegger, Koyr?, Sartre, Merleau-Ponty, and Hyppolite argued that man could no longer fill the void left by the "death of God" without also calling up the worst in human history and denigrating the dignity of the human subject. In response, they contributed to a new belief that man should no longer be viewed as the basis for existence, thought, and ethics; rather, human nature became dependent on other concepts and structures, including Being, language, thought, and culture. This argument, which was to be paramount for existentialism and structuralism, came to dominate postwar thought. This intellectual history of these developments argues that at their heart lay a new atheism that rejected humanism as insufficient and ultimately violent.

Описание:

This book returns to a time and place when the concept of transparency was met with deep suspicion. It offers a panorama of postwar French thought where attempts to show the perils of transparency in politics, ethics, and knowledge led to major conceptual inventions, many of which we now take for granted.

Between 1945 and 1985, academics, artists, revolutionaries, and state functionaries spoke of transparency in pejorative terms. Associating it with the prying eyes of totalitarian governments, they undertook a critical project against it—in education, policing, social psychology, economic policy, and the management of information. Focusing on Sartre, Lacan, Canguilhem, L?vi-Strauss, Leroi-Gourhan, Foucault, Derrida, and others, Transparency in Postwar France explores the work of ethicists, who proposed that individuals are transparent neither to each other nor to themselves, and philosophers, who clamored for new epistemological foundations. These decades saw the emergence of the colonial and phenomenological "other," the transformation of ideas of normality, and the effort to overcome Enlightenment-era humanisms and violence in the name of freedom. These thinkers' innovations remain centerpieces for any resistance to contemporary illusions that tolerate or enable power and social coercion.
