Описание:

Todays professionals recognize the need to elevate written communication beyond argument-driven pedantry, political polemic, and obtuse pontification. Whether the goal is to write the next serious work of best-selling nonfiction, to develop a platform as a public scholar, or simply to craft clear and concise workplace communication, The Art of Public Writing demystifies the process, showing why its not just nice, but necessary, to connect with those inside and outside ones area of expertise. Drawing on a diverse set of examples ranging from Charles Darwins On the Origin of Species to Steven Levitts Freakonomics, Zachary Michael Jack offers invaluable advice for researchers, scholars, and working professionals determined to help interpret field-specific debates for wider audiences, address complex issues in the public sphere, and successfully engage audiences beyond the Corner Office and the Ivory Tower.

We

need to teach the things this book advocates for-good writing as citizenship, as workplace, as informing the public clearly, and more. We want college

graduates who look out to the world, not those who look back at the academy. This book says all that very well. The argument is convincing, compelling, and could give rise to a movement to acknowledge in writing studies where higher education should go in the current, more open-access, world. -Dominic DelliCarpini, Naylor Endowed Professor of Writing Studies and Dean of the Center for Community Engagement at York College of Pennsylvania.

The Art of Public Writing communicates that public writing is communication happening between real human beings-not academic machines. -Jessica Schad Manuel, Book Oblivion

Zachary Michael Jack teaches courses in public and professional writing in the Masters in Professional and Creative Writing program at North Central College in Naperville, Illinois, where he serves as a faculty member in the Writing, Leadership, Ethics, and Values (LEV), and Chicago Area Studies (CAS) programs. Jacks columns, commentaries, and analyses have appeared in many of the nations most widely circulated publications, from USA

Today and the Los Angeles Times to the San Francisco Chronicle. The author of more than twenty books on subjects ranging from history, to sport, to

the environment, to leadership and social change, Jack leads public writing workshops nationwide, drawing on his publishing experience in multiple academic disciplines and previous careers as a newspaper section editor, assistant public radio producer, and outreach librarian.

Описание: In February 1913, firebrand activist "General" Rosalie Gardiner Jones mustered an army of equal rights activists and women demanding the right to vote and marched 250 miles from Manhattan to Washington, DC. The story of this indomitable woman shows a forgotten piece of the early women`s rights movement in the United States.

Описание:

What does it mean to deeply love a home place that haunts us still? From Mark Twain to Grant Wood to Garrison Keillor, regionalists from the Gilded Age to the Digital Age have explored the American Gothic and the homegrown fatalism that flourish in many of the nation's most far-flung and forgotten places. The Haunt of Home introduces us to a cast of real-life Midwestern characters grappling with the Gothic in their own lives, from promising young professionals debating the perennial "Should I stay or should I go" dilemma, to recent ?migr?s and entrepreneurs seeking personal reinvention, to faithful boosters determined to keep their communities alive despite the odds. In The Haunt of Home Zachary Michael Jack considers the many ways a region's abiding spirit shapes the ethos of a land and its people, offering portraits of others who, like himself, are determined to live out the unique promise and predicament of the Gothic.

Описание: Clubfoot: The Quest for a Better Life for Millions of Children tells the little-known story of the world's most common skeletal birth defect and development of a revolutionary method for eliminating lifelong disability for the 200,000 children born every year with this deformity. The hero of this story is Dr. Ignacio Ponseti (1914-2009) who, as a young physician, became enmeshed in the Spanish Civil War before being forced into exile in France and then Mexico. He eventually found a home in the heartland of America where, despite opposition from the medical establishment, he began a life-long quest to reshape children's futures from lives of pain and disability to lives of hope and promise. Because of Dr. Ponseti's quest, and the many healthcare professionals, parents, and other advocates who have taken it up, a normal, disability-free life is now possible for hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of children. This book answers three questions. Who was Ignacio Ponseti? What is the tr
