Schon am Beginn seiner k nstlerischen Laufbahn steht bei Georg Baselitz das Interesse an der Druckgrafik. Als Stipendiat in der Villa Romana in Florenz beginnt er 1965, den italienischen Manieristen Parmigianino zu sammeln. Dazu sagte er in einem Interview: Die Druckgraphik mochte ich aus zwei Gr nden: Zum einen ist sie die einfachste fixierte Art, eine k nstlerische Idee wiederzugeben. Zum anderen war sie auch gemacht f r das kleine Portemonnaie, f r kleine Leute. Seine eigenen ersten Radierungen datieren auf 1963/64, Holzschnitte auf 1966, 1977 folgen Linolschnitte - Arbeiten, die von Fred Jahn bei Johannes Gachnang in einem zweib ndigen Werkverzeichnis berwiegend schwarz-wei publiziert worden sind (Bd. I: 1963-1974; Bd. II: 1974-1982). Wie in seiner Malerei und Skulptur findet sich auch in der Druckgraphik die Auseinandersetzung mit Themenkomplexen wie Helden, Hirten, Adlern, B umen und vieles andere mehr. Der vorliegende Band versammelt nun, durchg ngig farbig abgebildet, in einzigartiger technischer Brillanz ca. 280 Werknummern aus den Jahren 1983-1989. Es steht au er Frage, dass das druckgraphische OEuvre von Georg Baselitz eigenst ndig neben seinem malerischen und bildhauerischen Schaffen steht. From Wolfram von Eschenbach's epic of chivalry to Richard Wagner's opera, from the knight as fool to the fool as savior, the story of Parsifal has struck deep chords with artists over the centuries.

In this collaboration, Georg Baselitz's studies for a 2018 production of Parsifal at the Munich State Opera (2018) are paired with Alexander Kluge's responses to Baselitz's drawings, through stories in which he filters out individual elements from Eschenbach's epic, such as Parsifal's native wit or the figure of the Knight of the Cheerful Countenance.

The result is an ongoing communication conducted over long periods of time: aspects of the Middle Ages can be found in the present. The volume concludes with Tristan Marquardt's text "Excerpts from a Parsifal Lexicon," which shows how far our contemporary language has diverged from Eschenbach's in terms of meaning and sound.
