Описание: Connects Chinese literary production to emerging discourses of pirates and the sea. The book shows that the late Ming discourses of pirates and the sea were fluid, ambivalent, and dialogical; they simultaneously entailed imperialistic and personal narratives of the `other`: foreigners, renegades, migrants, and marginalized authors.

Описание:

This title was first published in 2000: The printed writings of the most important authors of the sixteenth century are characterised by frequent references to current affairs. This collection brings together essays by literary scholars and historians of the era to discuss various ways in which those writing in the vernacular during the early sixteenth century responded to contemporary events. The papers in this volume also demonstrate how the spread of literacy was of fundamental significance for the economics of book production, and for ways in which political power was exercised and expressed, as well as for the development of new literary forms of critical and occasional writing.

Описание: Crawford examines the intriguing relationship between poetry and landscape in eighteenth- and early-nineteenth-century Britain. She examines the fraught parliamentary enclosure movement, which closed off the last of England`s open fields between 1760 and 1815, taking enclosure as a metaphor for a reconceptualisation of the aesthetics of space in the period.

Описание: This book shows that the self-conscious construction of ideas about modern English literary character derived in part from debates about Chinese history, taste, and culture. By writing China into new literary forms such as the novel, periodical paper, and newspaper, writers helped define what constituted modern English identity.

The Scholar and the State: Fiction as Political Discourse in Late Imperial China

Описание:

In imperial China, intellectuals devoted years of their lives to passing rigorous examinations in order to obtain a civil service position in the state bureaucracy. This traditional employment of the literati class conferred social power and moral legitimacy, but changing social and political circumstances in the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) periods forced many to seek alternative careers. Politically engaged but excluded from their traditional bureaucratic roles, creative writers authored critiques of state power in the form of fiction written in the vernacular language.

In this study, Liangyan Ge examines the novels Romance of the Three Kingdoms, The Scholars, Dream of the Red Chamber (also known as Story of the Stone), and a number of erotic pieces, showing that as the literati class grappled with its own increasing marginalization, its fiction reassessed the assumption that intellectuals’ proper role was to serve state interests and began to imagine possibilities for a new political order.
