Описание:

At a time when the dialogue concerning Black and White people in America is more crucial than ever, it is important to approach the conversation with the sense of urgency required to eliminate the historic strain between the two founding races of this country once and for all. If we continue to kick the proverbial can down the road, we will only be nursing a raging ulcer in the system which will continue to plague our children and our childrens children in unpredictable ways.

As any great problem solver knows, in order to solve a problem, you must first identify it. Red, White, And Black does just that. It delves deep into the historic relationship between Black and White people to expose the roots of the weeds that spring up from time to time to choke out any resemblance of a nation that is supposed to have moved far beyond Slavery and Segregation. Whenever tensions reside just beneath the surface of an environment, there is always a chance that the slightest agitation will provoke those tensions to rear their ugly heads in a violent and tumultuous manner. Red, White, And Black is devoted to preventing that precarious outcome from happening.

We can no longer ignore that Black and White people largely live in two different Americas, separate and unequal. What changes are America willing to make to truly give liberty and justice to everyone in this nation? We have reached the time in America where the American Dream has to put up or shut up. Either America will finally do what is necessary to make it equally accessible to every American, including Black people, or it is time for Black people to consider other options. MLK once said that We must learn to live together as brothers or perish together as fools. But today, Black people have found themselves saying, We must determine that if we cannot live together as brothers that we will also not perish together as fools. Is it time for Blacks and Whites to consider splitting up like the old Soviet Union did? Can America be saved? These questions and more are addressed in Red, White, And Black.

Описание: A LOVE POEM FROM A FATHER TO HIS TWO SONS, AND A TRIBUTE TO THE BEES THAT POLLINATE THE FOODS WE LOVE TO EAT. "Sometimes bees can be a bit rude. They fly in your face and prance on your food." And yet... without bees, we might not have strawberries for shortcakes or avocados for tacos Shabazz Larkin's The Thing About Bees is a Norman Rockwell-inspired Sunday in the park, a love poem from a father to his two sons, and a tribute to the bees that pollinate the foods we love to eat. Children are introduced to different kinds of bees, "how not to get stung," and how the things we fear are often things we don't fully understand. Shabazz Larkin made his picture book illustration debut with Farmer Will Allen and the Growing Table, followed by his author/illustrator debut with A Moose Boosh: A Few Choice Words About Food, both named American Library Association Notable Children's Books and published by READERS to EATERS. He is a multi-disciplinary artist and an advertising creative director. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife and two sons. SHABAZZLARKIN.COM

Описание:

"This is a spectacular body of work...I don't use the word spectacular often. It wrenched me inside out and reassembled me whole. Shabazz naps with one eye open where suffering and courage encapsulate lifetimes of experience. Be careful, his poems shamelessly offer grenades in lunch boxes posed as gifts." -Jaki Shelton Green, 2009 Piedmont Laureate, and winner of the North Carolina Award for Literature "One word, AMAZING. A powerful, moving collection from a poet at the height of his powers... From passionate lyrics to meditative narratives, Shabazz's poems are peopled with unforgettable characters, real human beings, friends, family, revolutionaries and lost wild men lurking city streets for something more than a handful of change. This book is not a confessional rather a meditation on a life lived and confirms that to be the Phoenix one must first endure the fire, only then can one rise from the ashes." -Howard L. Craft, poet, playwright "In a world ruled by indifference in which the glimmer of past embers appear barely visible, Shabazz's words remind us that if we train our eyes to listen, it is obvious for all to see that from Ganazumba to Hotada Francis, from the rage of loss to the reinvention of the soul, from the end of a world to the building of that other world of collective love found in the sweetness of mother's cooking, Black Fire lives on " -Alvaro Reyes, Assistant Professor, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill

Spatializing Blackness: Architectures of Confinement and Black Masculinity in Chicago

Описание: Over 277,000 African Americans migrated to Chicago between 1900 and 1940, an influx unsurpassed in any other northern city. From the start, carceral powers literally and figuratively created a prison-like environment to contain these African Americans within the so-called Black Belt on the city's South Side.

A geographic study of race and gender, Spatializing Blackness casts light upon the ubiquitous--and ordinary--ways carceral power functions in places where African Americans live. Moving from the kitchenette to the prison cell, and mining forgotten facts from sources as diverse as maps and memoirs, Rashad Shabazz explores the myriad architectures of confinement, policing, surveillance, urban planning, and incarceration. In particular, he investigates how the ongoing carceral effort oriented and imbued black male bodies and gender performance from the Progressive Era to the present. The result is an essential interdisciplinary study that highlights the racialization of space, the role of containment in subordinating African Americans, the politics of mobility under conditions of alleged freedom, and the ways black men cope with--and resist--spacial containment.

A timely response to the massive upswing in carceral forms within society, Spatializing Blackness examines how these mechanisms came to exist, why society aimed them against African Americans, and the consequences for black communities and black masculinity both historically and today.

Cowritten by Malcolm X s daughter, this riveting and revealing novel follows the formative years of the man whose words and actions shook the world.
Malcolm Little s parents have always told him that he can achieve anything, but from what he can tell, that s a pack of lies after all, his father s been murdered, his mother s been taken away, and his dreams of becoming a lawyer have gotten him laughed out of school. There s no point in trying, he figures, and lured by the nightlife of Boston and New York, he escapes into a world of fancy suits, jazz, girls, and reefer. But Malcolm s efforts to leave the past behind lead him into increasingly dangerous territory. Deep down, he knows that the freedom he s found is only an illusion and that he can t run forever.
"X "follows Malcolm from his childhood to his imprisonment for theft at age twenty, when he found the faith that would lead him to forge a new path and command a voice that still resonates today."
