Описание: Homelessness has been recognized as a serious problem in Japan since the 1990s, but the dominant model of a homeless person has been that of an unemployed male labourer - a model that has largely excluded women, who experience homelessness in different forms.

This study gives the homeless women of Japan a voice at last.  Based on extensive fieldwork, the author paints a vivid picture of the unique experiences of homeless women living in a diverse range of environments. By introducing a gender perspective to the analytic framework and challenging the conception of the homeless individual as a rational, autonomous subject, the author invites a critical reconsideration of homeless studies and of public policy.

Описание:

His life was barely worth a dollar. He slept outside, on park benches, in stairwells, under bushes. Michael Gaulden lived in shelter after shelter across the United States. With his father incarcerated and mother disabled, he stayed homeless for ten years.

From the age of seven to seventeen, Michael, with his mother and sister, journeyed along his own underground railroad, desperately searching for a way to free his family from the sewers of society.

Michael learned death was a big part of youth homelessness. Education was not. To survive, he had to become something more. Caught in between two worlds- his dreams vs. his reality- violence, gangsters, hunger, poverty, and sorrow marked his daily life.

Michael vowed to change his fate through getting his high school diploma. He never hoped to dream that not only would he graduate from high school but also from a prestigious California university. This is the true story of a homeless boy, marked for prison or worse, who fought against tremendous odds and persevered to achieve academic and professional success.

Описание: Youth are one of the fastest growing segments of the homeless population. Although there has been much research on how youth become homeless and survive on the streets, we know very little about their pathways off the street and the many challenges that present during this process. This book relates the lived experiences of homeless youth as they negotiate the individual, sociocultural, and economic tensions of transitioning out of homeless and street contexts and cultures. Through interviews the authors gained privileged entry into the lives of youth in Toronto and Halifax over a year-long period.Through rich qualitative prose, quantitative elaboration, and comic-book narratives, participants spoke of courage, fortitude, strength, adversity, and at times, simple bad luck. Ultimately this became a story of fragility, complexity, living ""on the edge,"" and the (re)-building of identity.

Описание: Uncovering injustices built into our everyday surroundingsCallous Objects unearths cases in which cities push homeless people out of public spaces through a combination of policy and strategic design. Robert Rosenberger examines such commonplace devices as garbage cans, fences, signage, and benches-all of which reveal political agendas beneath the surface. Such objects have evolved, through a confluence of design and law, to be open to some uses and closed to others, but always capable of participating in collective ends on a large scale. Rosenberger brings together ideas from the philosophy of technology, social theory, and feminist epistemology to spotlight the widespread anti-homeless ideology built into our communities and enacted in law.Forerunners: Ideas First is a thought-in-process series of breakthrough digital publications. Written between fresh ideas and finished books, Forerunners draws on scholarly work initiated in notable blogs, social media, conference plenaries, journal articles, and the synergy of academic exchange. This is gray literature publishing: where intense thinking, change, and speculation take place in scholarship.

Описание: Homeless women and their children who reside in a transitional housing facility or shelter have experienced multiple traumas and disruptions in their earliest attachments. These multiple, chronic traumas often result in disorganized attachment disorders, which, in turn, affect all future development. Although there are a dearth of programs and interventions that work with disorganized attachment disorder within the homeless population, there are few studies that explore the difficulties that homeless mothers experience in forming positive attachments with their children. Mothering without a Home: Attachment Representations and Behaviors of Homeless Mothers and Children explores the attachment style of homeless mothers and its effect on the resulting attachment style of their children. Ann Smolen utilizes psychoanalytically informed interventions with the goal of aiding these women in developing a deeper capacity to understand and be attuned to their children's emotional needs.

Описание:

"In Walking By the Homeless, Laura shows us that our journey toward Christ-likeness doesn't occur in the culmination of our understanding of God, but rather in wrestling with the difficult questions that are born from a heart rescued by His grace and overflowing with His love."

Adriana Hayes, Professor, Freelance Illustrator, Speaker, and Columnist for Just Between Us magazine

"The humility and honesty of Laura's faith journey will challenge and inspire you. Sometimes loving others is just doing the obvious, and sometimes it means building relationships with those who have no home. Everyone can do something, and I believe that the Holy Spirit will use this book as a catalyst to help you start something."

Diane Studer, Founder & Director of Soles For Jesus, Inc.

How many times have you walked by a homeless person? Or read about someone hurting or in need and felt conflicted? How often have you spoken to a stranger more nicely than your husband? How often have you looked in the mirror and not liked the person looking back at you?

Walking By the Homeless is a book about ordinary life intersecting with awareness. It is about one suburban woman's journey from ignoring the homeless to identifying with them by becoming mindful of gaps in her beliefs, actions and relationships in her heart and home. This is a story about doing something in Jesus' name in our cities, country clubs, kitchens and the crevices of our souls. Walking By the Homeless is not a glamourous or romantic journey, but it will challenge you to think and help you live and love with less regret.

Marriage and Marriageability: The Practices of Matchmaking between Men from Japan and Women from Northeast China

Описание:

How do the Japanese men and Chinese women who participate in cross-border matchmaking--individuals whose only interaction is often just one brief meeting--come to see one another as potential marriage partners? Motivated by this question, Chigusa Yamaura traces the practices of Sino-Japanese matchmaking from transnational marriage agencies in Tokyo to branch offices and language schools in China, from initial meetings to marriage, the visa application processes, and beyond to marital life in Japan.

Engaging issues of colonial history, local norms, and the very ability to conceive of another or oneself as marriageable, Marriage and Marriageability rethinks cross-border marriage not only as a form of gendered migration, but also as a set of practices that constructs marriageable partners and imaginable marriages. Yamaura shows that instead of desiring different others, these transnational marital relations are based on the tactical deployment of socially and historically created conceptions of proximity between Japan and northeast China. Far from seeking to escape local practices, participants in these marriages actively seek to avoid transgressing local norms. By doing so on a transnational scale, they paradoxically reaffirm and attempt to remain within the boundaries of local marital ideologies.
