Описание: From the mid-19th to the mid-20th century, British Southern Africa saw hosts of Europeans arriving in the region to transform their lives and participate in colonial life in different ways. Their narratives have largely gone unexplored and unremembered until the present. Set against the more glamorous history of colonialism and the "civilizing" mission, this focused history seeks to recover some of these forgotten narratives, and to tell the stories of the people and groups who, as colonial immigrants in Southern Africa, accrued immense social and cultural wealth. Ruramisai Charumbira chronicles the life of Alfred Beit, a German who would make millions in South African mining and go on to shape African infrastructure. She then turns to examine the Catholic missionaries who influenced native colonial policy. Finally, she demonstrates how 'birthright colonials' -- the Scots, Irish, Welsh, and English -- constructed and negotiated ethnic and national identities that were cast into sharp relief in the colonies. These narratives combine to complicate our current picture of colonialism and its legacy, and this book will encourage readers to think in more nuanced ways about the differentiated and unequal societies that predominate in today's world.

Описание: "Overcoming methodological challenges posed by translation, memory, and frankly a scarcity of documents disclosing askari voices, Moyd sought to understand these soldiers on their own terms. As a result she explores the everyday life of the askari, from within their households to their official and unofficial roles within colonial society, and she recovers a past widely misunderstood due to German praise and Tanzanian denunciation for their loyalty to the Schutztruppe (the official name of the German colonial army).... Violent Intermediaries, like other books in Ohio University Press`s New African Histories series edited by Jean Allman, AllenIsaacman, and Derek R. Peterson, expands the boundaries of African history in new and exciting directions." -Canadian Journal of History, Sept. 2015The askari, African soldiers recruited in the 1890s to fill the ranks of the German East African colonial army, occupy a unique space at the intersection of East African history, German colonial history, and military history. Violent Intermediaries recovers and reconsiders the origin and role of these men, and of colonial soldiers more generally. Lauded by Germans for their loyalty during the East Africa campaign of World War I, but reviled by Tanzanians for the violence they committed during the making of the colonial state between 1890 and 1918, the askari have been poorly understood as historical agents. Violent Intermediaries situates them in their everyday household, community, military, and constabulary contexts, as men who helped make colonialism in German East Africa. By linking microhistories with wider nineteenth-century African historical processes, Michelle Moyd shows that the construction of the German East African colonial army resulted from convergences and collisions among differing conceptions of masculinity, radical reconfigurations of socioeconomic, political, and military structures, and European imperial incursions. As soldiers and colonial intermediaries, the askari built the colonial state while simultaneously carving out paths to respectability, becoming men of influence within their local contexts. Yet their positions as clients of German officer-patrons also exposed their dependency on a particular political order, which in the case of German East Africa proved ephemeral. Through its focus on the making of empire from the ground up, Violent Intermediaries offers a fresh perspective on African colonial troops as state-making agents and critiques the mythologies surrounding the askari by focusing on the nature of colonial violence.

The negative legacy of the British empire is often thought of in terms of war and economic exploitation, while the positive contribution is associated with the establishment of good governance and effective, modern institutions. In this new analysis of the end of empire in Uganda, Spencer Mawby challenges these preconceptions by explaining the many difficulties which arose when the British attempted to impose western institutional models on Ugandan society.
Ranging from international institutions, including the Commonwealth, to state organisations, like the parliament and army, and to civic institutions such as trade unions, the press and the Anglican church, Mawby uncovers a wealth of new material about the way in which the British sought to consolidate their influence in the years prior to independence. The book also investigates how Ugandans responded to institutional reform and innovation both before and after independence, and in doing so sheds new light on the emergence of the notorious military dictatorship of Idi Amin. By unpicking historical orthodoxies about 20th-century imperial history, this institutional history of the end of empire and the early years of independence offers an opportunity to think afresh about the nature of the colonial impact on Africa and the development of authoritarian rule on the continent.

Описание: In this engaging study of African diplomacy, Nigerian scholar Nwankwo Nwaeziegwe revisits the issue of cooperation between Arab nationalist governments and the nations of Sub-Saharan Africa. The book clinically explores the proper bases, character, and implications of Arab-Sub-Saharan relations through the lens of Arab nationalist diplomatic initiative and collective Black African development initiatives. It presents the Sub-Saharan African with the option of either continuing to regard the Arabs as a people with a common aspiration or putting them in the same neo-colonial basket as he has tended to put Europeans. The book’s main objective is to arrive at a proper understanding of the basis of Arab interest in Sub-Saharan Africa from the Egyptian Revolution of 1952, which brought the first Arab nationalist to power, and 1993, the year of the epoch-making Declaration of Principles (DOP) between Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO).Most importantly, the book examines the other face of the African predicament, which previous scholars of modern Africa have neglected. Ironically, the Arabs may have participated in undermining Sub-Saharan Africa’s development by promoting the institution of slavery, which was just as ruthless as the European experience of that phenomenon, if not worse. Nevertheless, due to Europe’s overwhelming dominance in the colonial era, the Arab role has often been downplayed against that of Europeans.

Cahora Bassa Dam on the Zambezi River, built in the early 1970s during the final years of Portuguese rule, was the last major infrastructure project constructed in Africa during the turbulent era of decolonization. Engineers and hydrologists praised the dam for its technical complexity and the skills required to construct what was then the world’s fifth-largest mega-dam. Portuguese colonial officials cited benefits they expected from the dam—from expansion of irrigated farming and European settlement, to improved transportation throughout the Zambezi River Valley, to reduced flooding in this area of unpredictable rainfall. “The project, however, actually resulted in cascading layers of human displacement, violence, and environmental destruction. Its electricity benefited few Mozambicans, even after the former guerrillas of FRELIMO (Frente de Liberta??o de Mo?ambique) came to power; instead, it fed industrialization in apartheid South Africa.” (Richard Roberts)
This in-depth study of the region examines the dominant developmentalist narrative that has surrounded the dam, chronicles the continual violence that has accompanied its existence, and gives voice to previously unheard narratives of forced labor, displacement, and historical and contemporary life in the dam’s shadow.

Описание: Colonial agents worked for fifty years to make a Japanese Taiwan, using technology, culture, statistics, trade, and modern ideologies to remake their new territory according to evolving ideas of Japanese empire. Since the end of the Pacific War, this project has been remembered, imagined, nostalgized, erased, commodified, manipulated, idealized and condemned by different sectors of Taiwan’s population. The volume covers a range of topics, including colonial-era photography, exploration, postwar deportation, sport, film, media, economic planning, contemporary Japanese influences on Taiwanese popular culture, and recent nostalgia for and misunderstandings about the colonial era. Japanese Taiwan provides an interdisciplinary perspective on these related processes of colonization and decolonization, explaining how the memories, scars and traumas of the colonial era have been utilized during the postwar period. It provides a unique critique of the ‘Japaneseness’ of the erstwhile Chinese Taiwan, thus bringing new scholarship to bear on problems in contemporary East Asian politics.
