Описание: How did early Americans define themselves? The American exceptionalist perspective tells us that the young republic rejected Europeans, Native Americans, and African Americans in order to isolate a national culture and a white national identity. Imitativeness was often seen as antithetical to self and national creation, but Jason Richards argues that imitation was in fact central to such creation.

Описание: Lawrence Gellert has long been a mysterious figure in American folk and blues studies, gaining prominence in the left-wing folk revival of the 1930s for his fieldwork in the U.S. South. A "lean, straggly-haired New Yorker," as Time magazine called him, Gellert was an independent music collector, without formal training, credentials, or affiliation. At a time of institutionalized suppression, he worked to introduce white audiences to a tradition of black musical protest that had been denied and overlooked by prior white collectors.By the folk and blues revival of the 1960s, however, when his work would again seem apt in the context of the civil rights movement, Gellert and his collection of Negro Songs of Protest were a conspicuous absence. A few leading figures in the revival defamed Gellert as a fraud, dismissing his archive of black vernacular protest as a fabrication -- an example of left-wing propaganda and white interference. A Sound History is the story of an individual life, an excavation of African American musical resistance and dominant white historiography, and a cultural history of radical possibility and reversal in the defining middle decades of the U.S. twentieth century.

Описание: This anthology, a companion to the Santa Fe 400th Anniversary Commemoration publication, "All Trails Lead to Santa Fe," affords Native American authors the opportunity to unreservedly express their ideas, opinions and perspectives on the historical and cultural aspects of Santa Fe using their own voice and preferred writing styles that are not necessarily in accord with western academic and writing conventions. One cannot truly contemplate the history and culture of Santa Fe without the voices of the Native Americans-the original inhabitants of "Po'oge," "White Shell Water Place". Indeed, much of Santa Fe's story is conveyed from a western colonial perspective, which, until fairly recently, has predominantly relegated Native Americans to the fringes. However, over the last thirty years colonial narratives regarding Native American history and culture have been, and continue to be, disputed and amended as the pursuit of academic, intellectual and cultural self determination gains momentum in respective Native American tribal and academic communities. The Santa Fe 400th Commemoration has created an opportunity for the Native American voice to be heard. This anthology is a ceremony of Native voices, a gathering of Native people offering scholarly dialogue, personal points of view, opinions, and stories regarding the pre and post-historical and cultural foundations of Santa Fe. Includes Study Guide and Index.

Описание: Like cotton, indigo has defied its humble origins. Left alone it might have been a regional plant with minimal reach, a localised way of dyeing textiles, paper and other goods with a bit of blue. But when blue became the most popular colour for the textiles that Britain turned out in large quantities in the eighteenth century, the South Carolina indigo that coloured most of this cloth became a major component in transatlantic commodity chains. In Red, White, and Black Make Blue, Andrea Feeser tells the stories of all the peoples who made indigo a key part of the colonial South Carolina experience as she explores indigo’s relationships to land use, slave labour, textile production and use, sartorial expression and fortune building. In the eighteenth century, indigo played a central role in the development of South Carolina. The popularity of the colour blue among the upper and lower classes ensured a high demand for indigo and the climate in the region proved sound for its cultivation. Cheap labour by slaves - both black and Native American - made commoditisation of indigo possible and due to land grabs by colonists from the enslaved or expelled indigenous peoples, the expansion into the backcountry made plenty of land available on which to cultivate the crop. Feeser recounts specific histories - uncovered for the first time during her research - of how the Native Americans and African slaves made the success of indigo in South Carolina possible. She also emphasises the material culture around particular objects, including maps, prints, paintings and clothing. Red, White, and Black Make Blue is a fraught and compelling history of both exploitation and empowerment, revealing the legacy of a modest plant with an outsized impact.

Описание:

One way to fully understand the effect that slavery and its legacy has had, and continues to have, is to look at how it began-similar to when a person trying to understand their ancestry must go back and trace the roots of where their family began. 1619 - Twenty Africans will attempt to do both, tracing the beginning of slavery in America and having a discussion about tracing our ancestry, in the context of author Stephen Hanks' DNA test results. Hanks started out tracing two family names-and ended up examining the lineages of four genetic DNA cousins related to him. What he discovered would completely shake his whole understanding about how slavery in America was created, ultimately taking the author on a journey leading him to the events that started in the year 1619 on the shores of Virginia. Today's DNA testing is revealing that Americans have far more in common with each other than they ever could have imagined.
