The siege of Constantinople in AD 717--18 was a key clash between the expanding Umayyad Caliphate and the Byzantine Empire, and one which influenced the fate of Western civilization. In this specially illustrated study, Si Sheppard examines the course of this pivotal campaign.
The siege of Constantinople in AD 717--18 was the supreme crisis of Western civilization. The Byzantine Empire had been reeling under the onslaught of Arabic imperialism since the death of the Prophet, whilst Jihadist armies had detached Syria, Palestine, Egypt, and Carthage from imperial control and were in the process of imposing their ascendancy at sea. The Empire had been reduced to its Anatolian and Balkan heartland, and Arab incursions threatened even this--Arab naval forces had appeared under the walls of Constantinople every year from 674 to 678. But all this was only a prelude to the massive combined-arms invasion force that advanced on the capital in 717. This title offers a comprehensive study of the ensuing clash between the ascendant Caliphate and the Empire at bay. It details the forces available to each side, with their respective advantages and vulnerabilities, evaluating the leadership qualities of the rival commanders and assessing their strategic and tactical initiatives. It also accounts for the trajectory and outcome of the campaign and emphasizes the fundamental significance of the struggle. By holding the line, the Byzantines gave Europe enough time to develop at its own pace and emerge strong enough to face down its Islamic counterpart on equal terms. If Constantinople had fallen in 717, could Europe have endured as an independent entity? Could Christianity have survived as major religion? What would the future course of world history have been?

The siege and fall of the capital city of the Eastern Roman Empire, Constantinople, by the Ottoman Turks in 1453, marked a turning point in the history of the world. It was more than just another Muslim victory in their centuries-old war on Europe; it was confirmation that a deadly threat had arisen, and had to be checked, otherwise all of Europe would be consumed and extinguished.
This work covers the events leading up to the siege, the main players on both sides, the preparations, and a blow-by-blow account of the 53-day siege which finally saw the ancient walls of the city--which had withstood barbarian invaders for nearly 1,000 years--finally breached.
The reasons for the weakness of the city are highlighted: calls for aid by the last Eastern Roman emperor saw little or no response from the West, due to the division between Eastern and Western Christianity, and many citizens of the city refused to come to their own defense. Of the population of approximately 100,000, the last emperor could only raise an army of just over 6,000 men, and they, together with a few thousand volunteers from Western Europe, made their last stand against hundreds of thousands of Ottoman Turks. The outcome was inevitable.
This new edition of this classic and highly readable work has been reformatted, and enhanced with over 30 new illustrations and dramatic eyewitness accounts unavailable at the time of its original publication. Together, these accounts and the story of the fall of Constantinople make sobering reading, and serve as a warning to the future of Europe more than five centuries after the events they describe.
A comprehensive and sweeping history of the last 250 years of the Eastern Roman Empire, from the time of the disastrous Fourth Crusade to the dramatic and bloody seizure of the ancient capital city of Constantinople by the Ottoman Turks.
Drawing upon a rich array of original texts written by eyewitnesses and classical historians, this richly-researched work pulls no punches in highlighting the litany of inter-European squabbles--including those between the Roman and Eastern Catholic churches, and national and city divisions--which steadily weakened the great eastern capital city of Constantinople.
At the same time, hordes of central Asians--accurately racially described in this book--were forming to seize the lands of the once-great Eastern Roman Empire in the Middle East and Asia Minor. The Asiatic advance--under several tribal names but always subservient to the flag of Islam--finally conquered all of the present-day Middle East and Turkey, seizing those lands from the Christian West. The city of Constantinople, depleted and weakened behind its 1,000-year-walls, was cut off, an island in a sea of Mohammedans.
The inevitable siege and fall of that city, and the final chapter of the Roman Empire was written in blood, with the very last emperor cut down in the final defense against the invading Ottoman Turks.
In addition, this work highlights the fact that the Ottoman Turks could not have achieved their victory without the aid of thousands of white renegades--from the Janissary elite troops to the Hungarian master armorer Urban, who built the great guns which knocked down Constantinople's walls.
This work ends with the aftereffects of the fall of the Eastern Roman Empire, which included a revival in Greek learning in the West, and a realization that a united front was needed to halt the Turkish advance--a front which only became a reality over 200 years later when the Muslim invasion was finally halted at the gates of Vienna.
Originally published as "The Destruction of the Greek Empire and the Story of the Capture of Constantinople by the Turks," this new edition has been completely reset, and contains all the original maps and images. Indexed. Cover image: the double-headed eagle, symbol of the house of the last ruling house of the Eastern Roman Empire.

Описание: Memoirs or Chronicle of The Fourth Crusade and The Conquest of Constantinople is an 11th-Century history of the crusades by Geoffrey de Villehardouin that contains the following excerpt: Be it known to you that eleven hundred and ninety-seven years after the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, in the time of Innocent Pope of Rome, and Philip King of France, and Richard King of England, there was in France a holy man named Fulk of Neuilly - which Neuilly is between Lagni-sur-Marne and Paris - and he was a priest and held the cure of the village. And this said Fulk began to speak of God throughout the Isle-de-France, and the other countries round about; and you must know that by him the Lord wrought many miracles. Be it known to you further, that the fame of this holy man so spread, that it reached the Pope of Rome, Innocent*; and the Pope sent to France, and ordered the right worthy man to preach the cross (the Crusade) by his authority. And afterwards the Pope sent a cardinal of his, Master Peter of Capua, who himself had taken the cross, to proclaim the Indulgence of which I now tell you, viz., that all who should take the cross and serve in the host for one year, would be de- note: Innocent III, elected Pope on the 8th January 1198, at the early age of thirty seven, Innocent III was one of the leading spirits of his time-in every sense a strong man and great Pope. From the beginning of his pontificate he turned his thoughts and policy to the recovery of Jerusalem. ] 2 livered from all the sins they had committed, and acknowledged in confession. And because this indulgence was so great, the hearts of men were much moved, and many took the cross for the greatness of the pardon.
