In Making Martyrs East and West, Cathy Caridi examines how the practice of canonization developed in the West and in Russia, focusing on procedural elements that became established requirements for someone to be recognized as a saint and a martyr. Caridi investigates whether the components of the canonization process now regarded as necessary by the Catholic Church are fundamentally equivalent to those of the Russian Orthodox Church and vice versa, while exploring the possibility that the churches use the same terminology and processes but in fundamentally different ways that preclude the acceptance of one church's saints by the other. Making Martyrs East and West will appeal to scholars of religion and church history, as well as ecumenicists, liturgists, canonists, and those interested in East-West ecumenical efforts.
The United States' commitment to separation of church and state has defined the nation, from the structure of the schools and the welfare system to the nature of American politics and society. Many citizens mistakenly point to the First Amendment, which guarantees the freedom of religious practice, as the origin of this separation. Indeed, the Bill of Rights represents a crucial step toward the division of religious institutions from the affairs of the government. Yet, from the days of the early republic, the separation of church and state came about slowly, amid contentious legal, intellectual, and religious debates.
In this timely study, Mark McGarvie documents America's transition from Christian communitarianism with its government-sponsored religious institutions to liberal republicanism with its insistence that church and government not interfere with one another. Surprisingly, for a half-century after the ratification of the Constitution, many early state governments continued to support religious organizations. Disestablishment nonetheless proceeded, gaining ever greater momentum as churches lost tax support and found that they could not enforce mandatory attendance laws. No longer public institutions with strong state backing, churches were reconstructed as private, voluntary associations. At the same time, the state took responsibility for poor relief, community record keeping, and a variety of other public services formerly left to the churches.
Providing a close-up view of disestablishment as both a legal and an ideological process, McGarvie focuses on the efforts of three key states—New York, South Carolina, and New Hampshire—to disentangle church and state during the early national period. These case studies are particularly enlightening because a single state's disestablishment crisis helped change the law for the entire nation when New Hampshire's attempt to convert Dartmouth College into a secular state institution ended in a suit that eventually reached the Supreme Court. One Nation under Law is an important contribution to an ongoing, distinctly American debate.
Reflecting a prodigious amount of research in primary and secondary sources, this book examines the efforts of American abolitionists to bring northern religious institutions to the forefront of the antislavery movement.
John R. McKivigan employs both conventional and quantitative historical techniques to assess the positions adopted by various churches in the North during the growing conflict over slavery, and to analyze the stratagems adopted by American abolitionists during the 1840s and 1850s to persuade northern churches to condemn slavery and to endorse emancipation. Working for three decades to gain church support for their crusade, the abolitionists were the first to use many of the tactics of later generations of radicals and reformers who were also attempting to enlist conservative institutions in the struggle for social change.
To correct what he regards to be significant misperceptions concerning church-oriented abolitionism, McKivigan concentrates on the effects of the abolitionists' frequent failures, the division of their movement, and the changes in their attitudes and tactics in dealing with the churches. By examining the pre-Civil War schisms in the Presbyterian, Baptist, and Methodist denominations, he shows why northern religious bodies refused to embrace abolitionism even after the defection of most southern members. He concludes that despite significant antislavery action by a few small denominations, most American churches resisted committing themselves to abolitionist principles and programs before the Civil War.
In a period when attention is again being focused on the role of religious bodies in influencing efforts to solve America's social problems, this book is especially timely.

Описание: Biblical Misconceptions About Divorce and Remarriage at last, accurately explains what the Christian Bible actually teaches about this very confused subject. In this book you will discover: -The amazing contrasts and confusing interpretations between our different English translations that have caused great confusion. -The little understood historical differences addressed in the Bible that were totally different than our day and time. -How God's personal character of being a Just God dictated the requirement for a Divorce Document to be granted for the offended spouse. -The Biblical fact that God's purpose for requiring a divorce document was for the express purpose of providing for a legal remarriage. -You will understand the tremendous pain and wounds that have been heaped upon millions of God's already wounded children ... by the church itself ... where they should have received help and healing. -You will find in this little book the tools to help heal many wounded souls that you already know. -You will understand better than ever before in your life the veracity of Christ's own words ... that the truth will indeed bring freedom, peace, and joy. Ultimately this little book is a defense of God's reputation and His Holy Word ... the two having been greatly damaged through confused translations of the Bible ... and erroneous presentations of the nature and character of God.

Описание: This book is a study of a significant nexus in contemporary Catholic thought that has not had the attention that it deserves and is peculiarly relevant to the turbulent conditions of the Modern Church, especially in relation to Vatican II. It is a portrayal of Ratzinger’s discerning grasp of Vatican II Mariology and ecclesiology as a peritus of note during the Council’s sessions. The author lucidly sets out Ratzinger’s understanding of Marian theology as key to the Church’s self-understanding, which was the primary burden of Vatican II and still of the contemporary Church. Faithful to his hermeneutic, one of continuity in reform, the book casts Ratzinger’s appraisal of the Mary-Church relation as receptive to a new shift in the decision not to have a separate Council document on Mary because Mary is already the full realisation of the Church. One of the book’s strikingly novel contributions is its depiction of the Marian dimensions to the Church’s liturgy and missionary evangelization. The author shows that Ratzinger’s thought here is both intricate and coherent and that it discloses a profoundly unifying direction in the Council as a whole, that has not yet been fully understood.
