Описание:

The late Israeli Foreign Minister, Prime Minister and President Shimon Peres was a towering figure in Israeli and Middle Eastern politics. But what drove the hawkish statesman behind Israel's nuclear deterrence and early settlement policy to stake his political reputation on peace negotiations with the Arab world and the PLO, Israel's sworn enemy?

In this insider's account, written by Avi Gil, Peres's close confidant over almost 30 years, we witness firsthand the tense moments during the historic Oslo talks, kept under the strictest secrecy, when the explosive revelation that Peres was directing direct communications with Yasser Arafat's representatives for the first time threatened to leak to the press.

We also see the fervent discussions and arguments between the personalities involved in the peace process, including Peres's rivalries with the Prime Ministers he served under, including Rabin, Sharon and Netanyahu. Although one of Peres's most trusted colleagues, Gil offers a frank assessment of his mentor, recounting his foibles and failures as consistently as he does his victories. We are shown Peres's unique energy and optimism for Israel and its Arab neighbors in his vision of a 'New Middle East'.

But most valuable of all, we gain unique insight into the actual thought processes, conversations and decisions of Peres and his colleagues and adversaries as they initiated, processed and reacted to events in real time, shedding new light on a historic period in Israeli and Middle Eastern History. Of unique value to all those interested in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the book is also an insightful meditation on the inner-workings of all high-level government and diplomatic negotiations.

Описание:

In 1934, eleven-year-old Shimon Peres emigrated to the land of Israel from his native Poland, leaving behind an extended family who would later be murdered in the Holocaust. Few back then would have predicted that this young man would eventually become one of the towering figures of the twentieth century. Peres would indeed go on to serve the new state as prime minister, president, foreign minister, and the head of several other ministries. He was central to the establishment of the Israeli Defense Forces and the defense industry that would provide the young state with a robust deterrent power. He was crucial to launching Israel's nuclear energy program and to the creation of its high-tech "Start-up Nation" revolution. His refusal to surrender to conventional wisdom and political norms helped save the Israeli economy and prompted some of the most daring military operations in history, among them the legendary Operation Entebbe. And yet, as important as his role in creating and deploying Israel's armed forces was, his stunning transition from hawk to dove--with its accompanying unwavering commitment to peace--made him one of the globe's most recognized, honored, and admired statesmen.

In this, his final work, finished only weeks before his passing, Peres offers a long-awaited examination of the crucial turning points in Israeli history through the prism of having been a decision maker and eyewitness. Told with the frankness of someone aware this would likely be his final statement, No Room for Small Dreams spans decades and events, but as much as it is about what happened, it is about why it happened. Examining pivotal moments in Israel's rise, Peres explores what makes for a great leader, how to make hard choices in a climate of uncertainty and distress, the challenges of balancing principles with policies, and the liberating nature of imagination and unpredicted innovation. In doing so, he not only charts a better path forward for his beloved country but provides deep and universal wisdom for younger generations who seek to lead--be it in politics, business, or the broader service of making our planet a safer, more peaceful, and just place.

Описание:

"The Jewish people doesn't know what it owes to Shimon Peres." Said David Ben-Gurion, Israel's founding father.
Indeed, the young Peres, operating in secrecy, was the builder of Israel's military might. In Israel's Independence war, he acquired weapons from all over the world, and later drew the plans for the conquest of the Negev.

Appointed Director General of the Defense Ministry at the age of twenty-nine, he built Israel's Aircraft Industry; later, acting against the advice and the derision of his colleagues, he convinced France to supply Israel with the weapons it so badly needed, and was the architect of the 1956 Sinai Campaign. In a secret agreement with the French Prime Minister, Peres obtained France's help in building Israel's nuclear reactor in Dimona and making tiny Israel a nuclear power.

In a fierce snowstorm he drove to Bavaria, and convinced the German Defense Minister to supply large quantities of weapons to the beleaguered Israel, free of charge. Then in 1976, when an Air France airliner, carrying more than a hundred Israelis, was hijacked by terrorists to Entebbe airport in Uganda, Defense Minister Peres planned with a group of generals the hostages' rescue mission, that stunned the world.

Thus Peres earned his title of "Mr. Security". But as soon as Dimona's nuclear power gave Israel invincibility, he felt that time had come to make peace with the Arab nations. He reached a secret agreement with King Hussein of Jordan, but it was thwarted by right-wing Prime minister Shamir. Refusing to give up, he signed the Oslo agreements with the Palestinian leaders, and established the Peres Center for Peace. Mr. Security had become Mr. Peace. Twice Prime Minister, twice minister of Defense, he became President of Israel in 2007. He died at the age of 93, in 2016.

In 2001, when serving as Foreign Minister, Peres met with Michael Bar-Zohar, the biographer of David Ben-Gurion. "I am of the same age Ben-Gurion was when you started writing his biography," Peres said, "and after what I did for the country I hope that Ben-Gurion's biographer will be also mine."

Bar-Zohar, an author of 35 books of fiction and non-fiction, a professor of political science and a former member of the Knesset, spent several years writing this book, that was completed after Peres's death.

After leaving the USSR, Adam Gardov arrives in Austria to meet with the Israeli Sokhnut. He plans to immigrate to Israel and start a new life, but plans change.

Instead of Israel, Gardov decides to apply for an American visa-- a complicated process that takes six months. To support himself, he finds employment in Vienna, working for the odious Madame Betina.

Gardov decision will have far-reaching consequences. While anxiously awaiting word on his visa application, he meets the beautiful Nata, another Russian immigrant who turns his head before leaving for America.

Join Gardov as he travels from Vienna to that iconic home of immigrants, New York City. There, he discovers life in America will not be easy. He has a new language to master, a job to find, and a driving need to start his own business. And when he reconnects with Nata, he realizes he cannot live without the charming and artistic young woman.

The first volume in Shimon Garber's sweeping Immigrants saga, Capital of Immigrants, brings to life the trials of adapting to a new country and culture and the dedication it takes to forge a new life after leaving everything you once knew behind.
