Описание: Gender bias is well established in children by age 6, so creating a classroom environment where all children can learn without bias requires an understanding of the components of gender bias and the related challenges. This book supports educators by giving them the language to talk about gender equity, and the tools to assess culture curriculum.

Описание: Bay and Nathan are high-school students in the mountain town of Hailey, Idaho, and they are falling in love in the early autumn of their senior year. Bay is fascinated by local history and collects stories from older residents of the town, but no one shares her passion. Nathan, at six-foot six inches, towers over his close friends, Taki and Nick. Nathan has just turned 18. He is being raised by his mom, Carol, a nurse. His stepfather, Brock, is enraged that Nathan's interest lies in science rather than basketball. He is studying fairy shrimp, and classmates call him "Shrimp" to mock him. One day while flyfishing along an old Jeep road, Nathan and his friends discover a ghost town, Silvertop. Nathan tracks down the owner and gains a share of the property for himself. A friend of Carol's, Frank, tells her to prepare a secret place and stash food and supplies, because he has special knowledge that terrible times are coming soon. Carol and Nathan take Frank's advice and begin to stockpile supplies at the farm. Then Carol mysteriously disappears after an argument with Brock, when she refuses to sell the family farm, Skeleton Creek, leased to a family raising four boys. Carol and Nathan take Frank's advice and begin to stockpile supplies at the farm. Nathan and Bay search for her, and Nathan is nearly killed by someone with a rifle. Bay and Nathan grow closer as they search for Carol. Nathan finds out that before her disappearance, Carol visited a lawyer and signed the farm over to Nathan. Carol's car, empty but bloodstained, is found in the bottom of a canyon. Nathan and Taki go on a final camping trip before the mountain roads become impassible, and when they return to Hailey, they find fire, corpses, and empty homes and streets. Nathan cannot find Bay, but he does find the attorney, Stan Chambers, and his friend Nick. They hide out at the farm. The world has changed. Communications are down. Hospitals and stores have been emptied by soldiers, and Nathan has no idea what is happening or why. But Bay has managed to send Nathan a text message that she has been taken to Twin Falls, 80 miles away, on a bus with many others, to a motel there. Nathan and his friends go to the motel and find notes that Bay has left behind, and track her to a chicken factory farm about an hour's drive distant. Meanwhile, Bay and her best friend Barb find themselves processing chickens with several other women, under guard, supervised by a woman called Big Anna. Nathan, Taki, and Stan find the chicken farm and attempt to rescue Bay, but the attempt fails when outsiders raid the farm and engage in a firefight with the soldiers. They rescue one boy from the chicken farm, and they flee in Nathan's Jeep. Bay's friend Barb is killed in the firefight. Winter closes in. The story will be continued in the next volume.

Описание:

Wildflower Girl is the autobiographical story of Dana Quinney, a girl who grew up in Ketchum, Idaho during the 1950s and became a field biologist.

Born to love the richness and magic of the wilds, Dana rode horses and learned to fly fish from her father, a legendary guide. She learned the names of flowers and trees, and the habits of animals that lived nearby . . . she knew what forces built the landscape she saw from her bedroom window, and grew up to find adventure in the wild places of the world.

A beautiful and fascinating story.

"A refreshing and delightful read. Dana expresses her early life experiences with nature so clearly and vividly . . it reminded me not to be so overwhelmed with present day issues and to appreciate the past events in my life. Thanks, Dana." - Peter Walker, District Forest Ranger of the U.S. Forest Service (Ret)

Описание:

BOOK OF THE YEAR: 2019 Idaho Library Association

Growing up in Ketchum, Idaho in the 1950s, Dana Stewart Quinney found magic in the wilds of Idaho's Wood River Valley - unplowed, unskied, untracked, and unpeopled.

Her memoir, Wildflower Girl, recounts the life of an adventurous girl born for a life beyond the trail, leading her to a distinguished career in field biology. From tales of fishing with her father - a fishing guide for Ernest Hemingway and the renowned Sun Valley Resort; to a discovery of new species - each beautifully written chapter takes you on a nostalgic journey of mystery, adventure, and the magic of nature.

"A refreshing and delightful read. Dana expresses her early life experiences with nature so clearly and vividly - it reminded me not to be so overwhelmed with present day issues and to appreciate the past events in my life. Thanks, Dana." - Peter Walker, District Forest Ranger of the U.S. Forest Service (Ret)
