L'ascension et la chute de l'empereur fran ais sont dot es de qualit s dramaturgiques ind niables, mais c'est son cerveau qui int resse le plus Kubrick, qui ne parvient pas comprendre comment un esprit aussi brillant a pu succomber ses propres tentations irrationnelles et une fougue aux cons quences si d vastatrices.
Tandis qu'il travaille sur le script, Kubrick lit tous les livres qu'il peut se procurer sur Napol on, consulte des historiens et rassemble le fruit de ses recherches dans une base de donn es pl thorique de plus de 30.000 illustrations et photos de rep rage. Les costumes font l'objet de recherches et de croquis, comme les uniformes en papier, destin s all ger le budget. Pourtant, quelques semaines du d but du tournage, la M.G.M. puis United Artists se retirent, arguant que la production de sagas historiques est trop t m raire par les temps qui courent et que le co t du film constitue un risque trop important. Ils le regrettent s rement aujourd'hui.
La curiosit de Kubrick l' gard de Napol on perdura jusqu' la fin de sa vie, mais le budget requis pour faire le film de ses r ves resta totalement irr aliste.
