Описание: An engaging, informative, and visually stunning tour of the numerous native, introduced, and ornamental tree species found in Vancouvers Stanley Park, combining a wealth of botanical knowledge with a fascinating social history of the citys most celebrated landmark. Measuring 405 hectares (1,001 acres) in the heart of downtown Vancouver, Stanley Park is home to more than 180,000 trees. Ranging from centuries-old Douglas firs to ornamental Japanese cherry trees, the trees of Stanley Park have come to symbolize the ancient roots and diverse nature of the city itself. For years, Nina Shoroplova has wandered through Vancouvers urban forest and marvelled at the multitude of tree species that flourish there. In Legacy of Trees, Shoroplova tours Stanley Parks seawall and beaches, wetlands and trails, pathways and lawns in every season and every type of weather, revealing the history and botanical properties of each tree species. Unlike many urban parks, which are entirely cultivated, the area now called Stanley Park was an ancient forest before Canadas third-largest city grew around it. Tracing the parks Indigenous roots through its colonial history to its present incarnation as the jewel of Vancouver, visited by eight million locals and tourists annually, Legacy of Trees is a beautiful tribute to the trees that shape Stanley Parks evolving narrative.

Описание:

"We were undercapitalized, inexperienced, practiced democratic decision-making and some of us smoked dope occasionally. All elements that would make us grow as human beings and as business people. We ran a helluva show."

In the spring of 1975, a free-spirited Jan DeGrass backpacked across Canada in search of adventure and greater meaning in life. When she arrived in Vancouver, she met a group of people committed to social change; together they re-imagined the food industry in BC.

In The Co-op Revolution: Vancouver's Search for Food Alternatives, author and journalistDeGrass writes about her journey as a founding member of the Collective Resource and Services Workers' Co-op. Bounding to life during the heady, activist, grant-funded years of 1974-1980, the CRS Co-op became one of the most successful co-ops in BC and was committed to co-operation and worker ownership. While the decade of the seventies is remembered for its new wave of co-ops--usually organized by a "free-flowing" collection of women and men in their twenties--CRS was unique in its success. Among its many accolades, it created the Tunnel Canary cannery, the Queenright Co-operative Beekeepers, Vancouver's popular Uprising Breads Bakery and a food wholesaler, which later became Horizon Distributors. The economic, political and social skyline of Vancouver was changing. For some, the co-op movement was about crushing capitalism; for others it was simply about buying cheap, wholesome food from people they trusted and living in communal camaraderie. No matter the pursuit, co-operation was the answer.

Описание: The Larder of the Wise: The Story of Vancouver's James Inglis Reid Ltd. traces the history of the iconic store whose traditional Scottish fare and well-remembered hallmarks of "We hae meat that ye can eat" and "Value always" earned the following of devoted customers from inside and outside of the city for almost eighty years. Founded in 1908 and situated for most of its history at 559 Granville Street, Reid's was a fixture in Vancouver's downtown shopping district. Customers were drawn by the store's cured and smoked hams and bacons, expertly prepared sausages and haggis, freshly baked meat pies and scones, and many other favorite items--almost all made on premises using recipes and artisanal techniques passed down for decades. When it closed in 1986 to make way for the Pacific Centre development, many thought an important part of Vancouver heritage was forever lost. But thanks to a treasure-trove of business records, letters, photos and objects preserved from the store, and drawing on her own personal memories and knowledge of the business as the granddaughter of company founder James Reid and the daughter of Gordon Wyness, who succeeded Reid as manager, author M. Anne Wyness brings this special store alive once again. Richly illustrated and engagingly told, this story of a unique family business is also a story of Vancouver itself. Through economic booms and declines, two world wars, shifts in consumer habits, the rise of the suburbs and the changing fortunes of the downtown Granville Street area, Reid's enjoyed prosperity and endured challenges in step with a changing city.

Описание:

The geographic names on the Atlantic seaboard were in use for more than a century before the war of the American Revolution was fought.

Just as that war was beginning the first Spanish caravels crept northward from New Spain toward the fabled Straits of Anian. After the war was ended the wild coasts along the Pacific were a lure for the explorer and the fur trader. Voyages of this kind increased, breeding disputes over sovereignty, which culminated in Great Britain's geographic and diplomatic expedition of 1792.The commanding officer, Captain George Vancouver of the Royal Navy, was the friend and acquaintance of many men who had taken part for their country in the disputes and the war with the American colonies. It was perfectly natural that he should compliment those men as he discovered or rediscovered places that needed naming. An explorer of the same nationality, but of an earlier or a later period, would, of course, have given us a different set of names famous in British history. The American who loves the history of his country is usually broad enough to love also the great achievements of his kin beyond the seas. He therefore not only tolerates but actually grows fond of such names as Hood, Howe, Rainier, Puget, and Vancouver, as applied to the geography of the northwest. from the Introduction.
