Описание: The topic of ISAIAH: End Times and Messiah in Judaism is explained in the books title. The book uses selected sections of the Hebrew biblical Book of Isaiah as a springboard for explaining Judaisms understanding of the eschatological concepts of the End Times Redemption and the Messiah. I was motivated to write this book because in repeated conversations with American Christian pastors and believers, I found that there was a lack of agreement about even the meaning of the terminology that both Christianity and Judaism share in describing their views of the future. I chose to use the Book of Isaiah as my primary source because Christian tradition, based on understanding of translations of the book into English, makes use of Isaiah as a source for understanding the future Redemption and the coming of the Messiah. Judaism has a long-established and quite different understanding of these concepts. For the past 2,000 years, the Jewish understanding of these sources has been repressed due to the danger of stating things that are not in line with dominant Christian dogma. We now live in an era where such things are no longer taboo, and the Jewish view can be placed on the table for all to see and understand. This is a critical step in helping Christians understand the Jewish sources of their faith.

The End of the Psalter: Psalms 146-150 in the Masoretic Text, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Septuagint

Описание:

Psalms 146-150, sometimes called "Final Hallel" or "Minor Hallel", are often argued to have been written as a literary end of the Psalter. However, if sources other than the Hebrew Masoretic Text are taken into account, such an original unit of Psalms 146-150 has to be questioned.

"The End of the Psalter" presents new interpretations of Psalms 146-150 based on the oldest extant evidence: the Hebrew Masoretic Text, the Hebrew Dead Sea Scrolls, and the Greek Septuagint. Each Psalm is analysed separately in all three sources, complete with a translation and detailed comments on form, intertextuality, content, genre, and date. Comparisons of the individual Psalms and their intertextual references in the ancient sources highlight substantial differences between the transmitted texts.

The book concludes that Psalms 146-150 were at first separate texts which only in the Masoretic Text form the end of the Psalter. It thus stresses the importance of Psalms Exegesis before Psalter Exegesis, and argues for the inclusion of ancient sources beyond to the Masoretic Text to further our understanding of the Psalms.

Описание: For 2000 years Judaism and Christianity have been at odds with one another. The problem at the heart of the division is the concept of messiah. Shirley Lucass looks directly at the concept of messiah from an historical perspective and examines its roots in ancient Jewish literature, and its development within the Christian tradition, aiming not only to trace the biblical and extra-biblical developments of the concept, but to outline a platform for religious dialogue. Lucass begins with a survey of methodological approaches, and then moves on to consider the origins of the messiah concept in ancient near eastern kingship, the 'anointed' in the Second Temple period and the messiah as outlined in the New Testament and in post 70 CE Messianism. Lucass contends that the New Testament concept of messiah is not inconsistent with, nor incompatible with the Jewish antecedent traditions, and it is this conclusion which enables her to present a valuable chapter on the implications of this study for inter-religious dialogue.

Описание: For biblical scholars and historians of religion, this book changes the study of Isaiah, using comparative, archaeological, linguistic, and literary tools to argue for a different historical setting for Isaiah 24-27 than is usually thought. A passage that has often caused consternation comes alive in its proper contexts.

Описание: The Pentateuch (or the Torah) consists of the first five books of the Bible and is a foundational scripture for millions of people, both Jews and Christians. In this book Paula Gooder and Brad Anderson provide a clear and accessible introduction for those beginning Bible study. Key themes such as creation and the flood, exodus and liberation, as well as covenant and law are presented and analyzed. These themes are explored in their ancient context and from the standpoint of contemporary concerns such as liberation theology, gender issues and ecology. For this new edition introductory sections on the five books of the Pentateuch have been expanded and supplemented, while recent developments in the quest for the origins of the Pentateuch have also been updated. A new chapter on academic approaches to the study of the Pentateuch has been added, along with a section on the 'afterlife' of the Pentateuch which focuses on its place in the history of interpretation, as well as in the arts and culture. Reading lists and references have been updated throughout to take account of the most recent scholarship.
