Arthur W. Pink (1886-1952) "was born in Great Britain and immigrated to the U.S. to study at Moody Bible Institute. He pastored churches in Colorado, California, Kentucky, and South Carolina before becoming an itinerant Bible teacher in 1919. From 1925-1927 he Pastored in Sydney, Australia then went to visit his hometown of Nottingham, England before returning to the U.S. He returned to his native land in 1934, taking up residence on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, in 1940, and remained there until his death. Most of his works first appeared as articles in Studies in Scriptures, a monthly magazine concerned solely with the exposition of Scripture.

"Pink was virtually unknown and certainly unappreciated in his day. Independent Bible study convinced him that much of modern evangelism was defective. When Puritan and reformed books were generally disregarded by the Church as a whole, he advanced the majority of their principles with untiring zeal. The progressive spiritual decline of his own nation (Britain) was to him the inevitable consequence of the prevalence of a "gospel" that could neither wound (with conviction of sin) nor heal (via regeneration).

"Familiar with the whole range of revelation, Pink was rarely sidetracked from the great themes of Scripture: grace, justification, and sanctification. Our generation owes him a great debt for the enduring light he has shed, by God's grace, on the Truth of the Holy Bible."

After Pink's death, his works were republished by The Banner of Truth Trust and reached a much wider audience as a result. Biographer Iain H. Murray observes of Pink, "the widespread circulation of his writings after his death made him one of the most influential evangelical authors in the second half of the twentieth century." His writing sparked a revival of expository preaching and focused readers' hearts on biblical living. Yet even today, Pink is left out of most biographical dictionaries and overlooked in many religious histories.

Pink was an ardent Calvinist and did not shrink from preaching and teaching the "doctrines of grace" otherwise known as the Five Points of Calvinism. He was a voluminous writer generating over 2000 expository articles and dozens of books. (www.theopedia.com)

While another important part of his commission is stated in, "Comfort ye, My people, said your God" (Isa. 40:1). "What an honorable title, "My people " What an assuring relationship: "your God " What a pleasant task: "comfort ye My people " A threefold reason may be suggested for the duplicating of the charge. First, because sometimes the souls of believers refuse to be comforted (Ps. 77:2), and the consolation needs to be repeated. Second, to press this duty the more emphatically upon the preacher's heart, that he need not be sparing in administering cheer. Third, to assure us how heartily desirous God himself is that His people should be of good cheer (Phil. 4:4)." "Opinion has been much divided concerning the design, scope, and application of the Sermon on the Mount. Most commentators have seen in it an exposition of Christian ethics. Men such as the late Count Tolstoi have regarded it as the setting forth of a "golden rule" for all men to live by. Others have dwelt upon its dispensational bearings, insisting that it belongs not to the saints of the present dispensation but to believers within a future millennium. Two inspired statements, however, reveal its true scope. In Matthew 5:1, 2, we learn that Christ was here teaching His disciples. From Matthew 7:28, 29, it is clear that He was also addressing a great multitude of the people. Thus it is evident that this address of our Lord contains instruction both for believers and unbelievers alike." Two chief obstacles lie in the way of the salvation of any of Adam's fallen descendants: bondage to the guilt and penalty of sin, bondage to the power and presence of sin; or, in other words, their being bound for Hell and their being unfit for Heaven. These obstacles are, so far as man is concerned, entirely insurmountable. This fact was unequivocally established by Christ, when, in answer to His disciples' question, "Who then can be saved?", He answered, "with men this is impossible." A lost sinner might more easily create a world than save his own soul. But (forever be His name praised), the Lord Jesus went on to say, "with God all things are possible" (Matt. 19:25, 26). Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar. Born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society and quickly rose in prominence. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death, ' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Hear me, ye Shepherds of the new millennium The philosophical strength of Christianity resides in its claim to Truth. The theological strength of Christianity resides in its identification of that Truth. Its metaphysical strength resides in its clarification of that Truth while its social strength is found in its call to existential relationship with that Truth

The reputation of Truth, however, is being brought to task. Its value and relevance are being challenged by a veiled counterfeit that parodies itself in a discolored form of reality. The armor of Truth is being substituted with a loose fitting mantle by an alien Captain of Deception. The trumpeting of Truth goes unheard by a Sleeping Giant who has been lulled to slumber by the lullaby of comfort and contentment. The convicting darts of Truth are being masterfully dodged by the psychology of avoidance. The God of Truth is being replaced by the age-old sin of self-enthronement.

There is, indeed, a pitiable shallowness today that is mixing Truth with the murky waters of a haughty and arrogant spirit of self-deification creating an illusion of progress and prosperity. Wisdom, dear brethren, is being shunned for the ignorant darkness of self-sufficiency. The darkness of ignorance is, unfortunately, much more comfortable than the convicting brilliance of Truth, where the demand for self-confrontation leads man to the excruciating realization of his limits; thereby requiring of him a painful search beyond himself for validity How much more accommodating, I ask, is the broadened canon of tolerance than the canon of righteous restraint The narrow road that directs man toward peace with God has been broadened into an avenue of tolerance. The Creator God has become a foreign and unwelcomed deity whose Truth has been reduced to a level of contemptuous intrusion.

Indeed, as the post-modern church enters the new millennium Truth is being shaped, reshaped, and shifted devastatingly by the tumultuous winds of a culture in spiritual chaos. In the storm center of swirling spiritual confusion stands the people of God, the people of this post-modern church, and under her ministry umbrella the people entrusted to her care - both inside of and outside of the church.
