What would happen in organizations if leaders used their power to encourage the full participation of subordinates?
Every day we read about leaders who abuse their power in ways that discourage the full engagement of subordinates.
Douglas R. Bunker, an organizational psychologist, proposes ways managers can create positive relationships with their subordinates that promote exceptional performance. Learn how to:
understand why subordinates accept or reject messages from managers; examine the underlying ethical and moral perspectives on power; and think differently about your own use of power
He also explains how to address the three fundamental needs of employees: agency, growth, and justice. When leaders and their subordinates work toward fulfilling these needs, everyones success will be enhanced.
Filled with case studies and research, this guide will help you transform your company culture, bolster communication, and reap rewards from Leader Power and Subordinate Engagement.
This anthology-the first of an initial two volume set-specifically covers Small Wars Journal writings on the Al Qaeda network spanning the years 2007-2011. It will be followed by a planned second volume covering the years 2012-2014 that highlights both Al Qaeda and Islamic State activities. Depending on the receptivity of the readers to these volumes, future anthologies may be published. Conceptually, these volumes have been inspired by the four Small Wars Journal-El Centro anthologies published to date between 2012-2015. These new anthologies are meant to contribute to US security debates focusing on radical Islamist global insurgency by collecting diverse SWJ essays into more easily accessible formats.
This volume is composed of forty-nine chapters divided into sections on radical Islamist OPFORs (opposition forces) and context and U.S.-allied policy and counter radical Islamist strategies, a preface by Youssef Aboul-Enein, a postscript by Hakim Hazim, this introduction, an acronym listing, extensive chapter notes, and short biographies of the forty-five contributors showcased in this work.

Finalist for the 2015 Pulitzer Prize in History
Written from a strikingly fresh perspective, this new account of the Boston Tea Party and the origins of the American Revolution shows how a lethal blend of politics, personalities, and economics led to a war that few people welcomed but nobody could prevent.
"A great Empire, like a great Cake, is most easily diminished at the edges," observed Benjamin Franklin, shortly before the American Revolution. In An Empire on the Edge, British author Nick Bunker delivers a powerful and propulsive narrative of the road to war. At the heart of the book lies the Boston Tea Party, when the British stumbled into an unforeseen crisis that exposed deep flaws in an imperial system sprawling from the Mississippi to Bengal. Shedding new light on the Tea Party's origins and on the roles of such familiar characters as Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, Thomas Hutchinson, and the British ministers Lord North and Lord Dartmouth, Bunker depicts the last three years of deepening anger on both sides of the Atlantic, culminating in the irreversible descent into revolution.
