A look at the extraordinary ways the brain turns thoughts into actions--and how this shapes our everyday lives

Why is it hard to text and drive at the same time? How do you resist eating that extra piece of cake? Why does staring at a tax form feel mentally exhausting? Why can your child expertly fix the computer and yet still forget to put on a coat? From making a cup of coffee to buying a house to changing the world around them, humans are uniquely able to execute necessary actions. How do we do it? Or in other words, how do our brains get things done? In On Task, cognitive neuroscientist David Badre presents the first authoritative introduction to the neuroscience of cognitive control--the remarkable ways that our brains devise sophisticated actions to achieve our goals. We barely notice this routine part of our lives. Yet, cognitive control, also known as executive function, is an astonishing phenomenon that has a profound impact on our well-being.

Drawing on cutting-edge research, vivid clinical case studies, and examples from daily life, Badre sheds light on the evolution and inner workings of cognitive control. He examines issues from multitasking and willpower to habitual errors and bad decision making, as well as what happens as our brains develop in childhood and change as we age--and what happens when cognitive control breaks down. Ultimately, Badre shows that cognitive control affects just about everything we do.

A revelatory look at how billions of neurons collectively translate abstract ideas into concrete plans, On Task offers an eye-opening investigation into the brains critical role in human behavior.

Описание: Jonathan Kahn argues that an uncritical embrace of implicit bias, to the exclusion of power relations and structural racism, undermines wider civic responsibility for addressing racial inequality by turning it over to experts. Race on the Brain challenges us to engage more democratically in the difficult task of promoting racial justice.

Описание: The Machines Inside Our Brain: Cognitive Mechanisms of Information Processing is an innovative anthology that not only provides students with engaging articles pertaining to brain processes of information processing and storage, but also teaches students how to strategically read, analyze, and digest scientific articles. The collection begins with a comprehensive instructional chapter that teaches students how to approach the consumption and analysis of a scientific article. Readers learn about the compositional features of an article, what it means when an article is peer reviewed, how to effectively annotate an article to increase personal comprehension, and more. Students are then challenged to apply these techniques to the articles within the anthology, then answer a variety of deep, applied questions regarding their contents. The readings within the collection share research cover the variety of cognitive processes that our brains carry out. Specific articles explore attention, automatic processing of information, the manipulation of mental representations, accessing memory, the structure of short-term memory, the nature of knowledge representation, expertise, problem solving, and more. A unique anthology that shares both classic and cutting-edge research while teaching students how to critically examine scientific articles, The Machines Inside Our Brain is well-suited for courses that focus on memory and brain processes, as well as classes that seek to provide a comprehensive survey of cognitive psychology while teaching students to read the primary scientific literature.

Practical tools and tips to lead a healthy and productive life

The brain is the basis of everything we do: how we behave, communicate, feel, remember, pay attention, create, influence and decide.

Why We Do What We Do combines scientific research with concrete examples and illustrative stories to clarify the complex mechanisms of the human brain. It offers valuable insights into how our brain works every day, at home and at work, and provides practical ideas and tips to help us lead happy, healthy and productive lives.

- Learn about how your brain functions

- Find out how emotions can be overcome or last a lifetime

- Access your brain's natural ability to focus and concentrate

- Think creatively

The thoughts you have and the words that you speak all have an effect on your neural architecture -- and this book explains what that means in a way you can understand.

Описание:

The world seems to become more complex from day to day. This trend characterizes our daily life - for example by the diversification of product worlds, by a growing jungle of laws, ordinances and regulations as well as by growing international interconnectedness in economy, culture and politics. At the same time, we produce a gain in knowledge and technologies, which has never been seen before. But what grows faster, is the finding of how limited our understanding of the world is. This refers not least to the organ, which we use to meet the continuously complicating matters - our brain. However, the neurosciences make great progress, and they succeeded in explaining lots of phenomena and in treating many diseases. But the findings about how the brain acts as an autonomous system or as a "brain processor" are limited, what not least results from the highly specialized research culture. But how might it be possible to keep control over complex societal processes while our insights into the appropriate control organ are deficient? Eckhard Schindler deals with this topic and tries to highlight some of the systemic artifices, which made the brain the most successful organ of our time. He describes a macro model, which explains how the nervous system intermediates between natural environment, social environment and body, and how it became a medium for pragmatic and creative reflection of nature in neural patterns. A final conclusion is that the brain generates the present-day complexity to a great extent on its own, and that it is thus mostly challenged by requirements that are produced by itself.
