Описание:

The only neighborhood-by-neighborhood guide to New York Citys largest borough, from the award-winning author of The New York Nobody Knows

Bill Helmreich walked every block of New York City--some six-thousand miles--to write the award-winning The New York Nobody Knows. Later, he re-walked most of Queens--1,012 miles in all--to create this one-of-a-kind walking guide to the citys largest borough, from hauntingly beautiful parks to hidden parts of Flushings Chinese community. Drawing on hundreds of conversations he had with residents during his block-by-block journey through this fascinating, diverse, and underexplored borough, Helmreich highlights hundreds of facts and points of interest that you wont find in any other guide.

In Bellerose, youll explore a museum filled with soul-searing artwork created by people with mental illness. In Douglaston, youll gaze up in awe at the citys tallest tree. In Corona, youll discover the former synagogue where Madonna lived when she first came to New York. In St. Albans, youll see the former homes of jazz greats, including Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday. In Woodhaven, youll walk a block where recent immigrants from Mexico, Guyana, and China all proudly fly the American flag. And much, much more.

An unforgettably vivid chronicle of todays Queens, the book can be enjoyed without ever leaving home--but its almost guaranteed to inspire you to get out and explore this captivating borough.

  • Covers every one of Queens neighborhoods, providing a colorful portrait of their most interesting, unusual, and unfamiliar people, places, and things
  • Each neighborhood section features a brief overview and history; a detailed, user-friendly map keyed to the text; photographs; and a lively guided walking tour

Описание: Sociologists have long noted that dynamism is an essential part of the urban way of life. However, walking as a significant social activity and crucial research method (in spite of its ubiquity as part of urban life) has often been overlooked. This volume considers walking in the city from a variety of perspectives, in a variety of places and with a variety of methods, to engage with the question of how walking can contribute to the sociological imagination and reveal sociological knowledge. Bringing together new research on sites across Europe, Walking in the European City addresses the nature of everyday mobility in contemporary urban settings, shedding light not only on the ways in which walking relates to other social institutions and practices, but also as a method for studying urban life. With attention to intersections of race and ethnicity, gender and class, as well as the manner in which processes of gentrification transform urban space, this book examines questions of access to public places, exploring the ways in which urban dwellers’ use of and relation to neighbourhood spaces are shaped by inequalities of status and power. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, geography and anthropology with interests in urban studies, mobility and research methods.

Due to the brilliant designs of British general James Oglethorpe in the early 1700s, the Historic District of Savannah, Georgia, is one of the most walkable neighborhoods in the country. With the help of this invaluable guide, saunter through Savannah's history-filled streets and squares and tour the city's oldest buildings and majestic homes, such as the Mercer House and the De Soto Hotel. Savor the histories and traditions of the relics of the romantic past and wander down the brick sidewalks under the city's hundred-year-old oaks. This guide also describes the many public gardens, galleries, museums, and areas of commerce before and during the Civil War and even includes a few of the pirate legends and ghost stories for which the city is famous. Accompanied by charming photos, this work provides insight into life in the 1800s, Savannah's Historic Plan, industry in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, and local art, all of which are revived in its pages.

Walking Blues: Making Americans from Emerson to Elvis

Описание: Who or what is an American? Many scholars have recently argued that in a country of such vast cultural and ethnic diversity as the United States it is not useful or even possible to talk of a single national identity. Are people right to suggest that the very idea of Americanness is merely a myth designed to obscure the divisions among us? This is the central question addressed by Tim Parrish in this imaginative interdisciplinary study. Working in the tradition of the blues, an art form based on the adaptation of cultural past to present, Parrish seeks to show what happens when we think of American identity not as some transcendental entity or essence, but as an ongoing process. At the core of his analysis is an appreciation of the rich legacy of pragmatism, a distinctly American frame of mind that sees truth as an act rather than an object, as a matter of doing rather than being. While the philosophical roots of pragmatism can be found in the writings of Ralph Waldo Emerson, William and Henry James, and Horace Kallen, the same intellectual approach informs the work of writers such as Ralph Ellison, Mary Antin, and Philip Roth as well as creative artists such as Son House, Elvis Presley, and James Brown. What all of these figures share, according to Parrish, is a recognition of the intrinsic connection between thought and action that has allowed Americans to define who they are through what they do. Walking Blues accounts for our cultural diversity without either insisting that we are all the same or denying that we have anything in common. Far from glossing over difference, Parrish shows how our American social, racial, and ethnic conflicts often mark the starting point for the various acts of creation through which we make--and remake--ourselves as Americans.
