Описание:

A landmark collection of prose from pulitzer prize winner annie dillard, including her most beloved pieces and some rarely seen work

The Abundance includes the best of Annie Dillards essays, delivered in her fierce and muscular prose. Intense, vivid, and fearless, her work endows the true and seemingly ordinary aspects of life with beauty and irony. These essays invite readers into sweeping landscapes, to join her in exploring the complexities of time and death, often with wry humor.

On one page, an eagle falls from the sky with a weasel attached to its throat; on another, a man walks into a bar.

Marking the vigor of this powerful writer, The Abundance highlights Annie Dillards elegance of mind.

She wasn't aware of her gift's significance, yet he expects to be courted.

Kimiko enrolls at the In-between's prestigious new high school, which is designed to promote the integration of the human and inhuman races. As a reaver, she's supposed to act as peacemaker, bridging a formidable cultural gap, but the other two members of her triad don't need any help in that department. Akira and Suuzu have been friends since middle school. Instead, the boys must rally behind Kimiko when she inadvertently initiates a courtship with Eloquence Starmark.

Описание: At the age of twenty-five, Kimiko Tobimatsu was a young, queer, mixed-race woman with no history of health problems whose world was turned upside down when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. In an instant, she became immersed in a new and complicated life of endless appointments, evaluations, and treatments, and difficult conversations with her partner and parents. Kimiko knew that this wasn't what being twenty-five was supposed to be like ... but then, she didn't have a choice.

With tender illustrations by Keet Geniza, Kimiko Does Cancer is a graphic memoir that upends the traditional "cancer narrative" from a young woman's perspective, confronting issues such as dating while in menopause, navigating work and treatment, and talking to well-meaning friends, health care professionals, and other cancer survivors with viewpoints different from her own. Not one for pink ribbons or runs for the cure, Kimiko seeks connection within the cancer community while also critiquing the mainstream cancer experience.

Honest and poignant, Kimiko Does Cancer is about finding one's own way out of a health crisis.

Описание: From the beginning of the first chapter: THE name is on a paper-lantern at the entrance of a house in the Street of the Geisha. Seen at night the street is one of the queerest in the world. It is narrow as a gangway; and the dark shining woodwork of the house-fronts, all tightly closed, - each having a tiny sliding door with paper-panes that look just like frosted glass, - makes you think of first-class passenger-cabins. Really the buildings are several stories high; but you do not observe this at once-especially if there be no moon --- because only the lower stories are illuminated up to their awnings, above which all is darlmess. The illumination is made by lamps behind the narrow paper-paned doors, and by the paper-lanterns hanging outside - one at every door. You look down the street between two lines of these lanterns - lines converging farofi into one motionless bar of yellow light. Some of the lanterns are eggshaped, some cylindrical; others foursided or six-sided; and Japanese characters are beautifully Written upon them. The street is very quiet - silent as a display of cabinet-work in some great exhibition after closing-time. This is because the inmates are mostly away - attending banquets and other festivities. Their life is of the night

Описание:

Akiko "Jane" Thompson, a half-Japanese, half-Caucasian woman in her midthirties, is attempting to forge a quietly happy life in the Bay Area with her fianc , Shiro. But after a bizarre car accident, things begin to unravel. An intruder ransacks their apartment but takes nothing, leaving behind only cryptic traces of his or her presence. Shiro, obsessed with government surveillance, risks their security in a plot to expose the misdeeds of his employer, the TSA. Jane's mother has seemingly disappeared, her existence only apparent online. Jane wants to ignore these worrisome disturbances until a cry from the past robs her of all peace, forcing her to uncover a long-buried family secret.

As Jane searches for her mother, she confronts her family's fraught history in America. She learns how they survived the internment of Japanese Americans, and how fear and humiliation can drive a person to commit desperate acts.

In melodic and suspenseful prose, Guthrie leads the reader to and from the past, through an unreliable present, and, inescapably, toward a shocking revelation. Block Seventeen, at times charming and light, at others disturbing and disorienting, explores how fear of the "other" continues to shape our supposedly more enlightened times.

Описание: In the fifties, with the occupation of Japan. The Korean war - this is the place to be. Two shipmates and I rented an old house up in the hills, overlooking the bay of Tokyo. After two weeks or so, the three of us are going to see Japan. We got on the bus to go downtown. It stops at every street, so we knew it would reach downtown. We are then back at the house, and our cook asked if we need someone who can speak english. The cook went to the neighbors and brought back a young lady. The woman was around twenty years old. Her hair was in a ponytail, and she was wearing a white cotton blouse and a pair of blue jeans. She said "hello, my name is Kimiko." She could speak english quite well, like an English lady and not like an American. I did not quite know what to think about that. She said "the old cook said you need a translator and you would like to go to Yokohama is that correct?" and I said correct. Kimiko offered to be our translator and guide. However in Japan, unmarried women needs an escort before they are permitted to accompany an unmarried man. And that's how the book came to be.
