En efecto, una vez, que se recopilaron los datos previos de la Revelaci n y el Magisterio sobre Jesucristo y se solventaron las dificultades que provienen de la necesaria conexi n entre los tratados de Dios Uno y Trino y el de Cristolog a (volumen I), y se respondieron a las preguntas sobre qui n es Cristo--esto es, su ser como el Hijo de Dios vivo, el Verbo encarnado, las dos naturalezas perfectas unidas hipost ticamente en la segunda Persona de la Trinidad--, y qu es Jesucristo--es decir, su papel de Mediador-- (volumen II), corresponde profundizar en la obra del Se or, respondiendo al porqu de Jesucristo, lo que nos lleva al estudio de la Redenci n. Como dice el Credo niceno-constantinopolitano:
"propter nos homines et propter nostram salutem descendit, incarnatus est et homo factus est et passus est, et resurrexit tertia die, et ascendit in c los, venturus iudicare vivos et mortuos''. D. S. 125.
Aunque la obra redentora de Cristo alcanza su culminaci n en el Misterio Pascual de su Pasi n, Muerte, Resurrecci n y Ascensi n, sin embargo, siendo Cristo el Mediador por antonomasia y el Nuevo Ad n, toda su existencia terrena es tambi n salvadora: desde su entrada en el mundo hasta su exaltaci n a los cielos. Y sa es tambi n la raz n de que la teolog a cl sica incluyera en los estudios de cristolog a un apartado extenso para la consideraci n de los diferentes aspectos de la vida de Jes s, que no son simplemente preparaci n para la Redenci n, sino que son ya realidad de esa salvaci n. Santo Tom s lo declara taxativamente: "Omnia enim qu in Christi carne facta sunt, nobis salutaria fuerunt virtute divinitatis unit '' (Santo Tom s de Aquino: Compend. Theol., lib. 1, cap. 239).
Con todo, es l gico que se realice un estudio m s extenso de todo el misterio pascual del Se or, su Pasi n, Muerte, Sepultura, Resurrecci n y Ascensi n, desde el punto de vista soteriol gico.
La parte final del volumen se dedica a desentra ar la naturaleza de la obra redentora del Se or, sobre todo, bajo la perspectiva de la satisfacci n, expiaci n, m rito y causalidad de Jesucristo. Como resume Santo Tom s de Aquino, se trata de profundizar en la pasi n de Cristo, que en cuanto vinculada con su Divinidad, obra por v a de eficiencia; pero, en cuanto referida a la voluntad del alma de Cristo, obra por v a de m rito; vista en la carne de Cristo, act a a modo de satisfacci n, en cuanto que por ella somos liberados del reato de la pena; a modo de Redenci n, en cuanto que mediante la misma quedamos libres de la esclavitud de la culpa; y a modo de sacrificio, en cuanto que por medio de ella somos reconciliados con Dios (Santo Tom s de Aquino: Summ. Theol., III, q. 48, a. 6, ad 3.)
Concluye el volumen con la bibliograf a selecta que se utiliz para la composici n de toda la obra.
