During the last several decades, self-regulation of learning has permeated all areas of learning and development, including teaching preparation programs. Self-regulatory competences are essential for successful academic achievement and performance. This book is written for teacher candidates to believe that if they heard a call to teach, they can see in each paragraph of this book that they can do it. Teacher candidates reading this book will find themselves vicariously portrayed in the journey of the four teacher candidates described in this book. They can empathize with their struggles but will also find assurance that through self-regulation their own journeys and dreams could have great outcomes. This book is also written for teacher educators in teaching education programs so that they would realize that by transforming their curriculum in light of new findings on self-regulation, they could facilitate the training process of teacher candidates under their supervision and that self-regulation of learning and teaching matters for teacher candidates.
Drawing on a rich body of research and theory on self-regulation of learning, Bembenutty, White, and V lez present compelling case studies indicating that the capability of teacher candidates to self-regulate their attainment of educational goals depends on their exposure to self-regulated teacher educators, especially as they model, scaffold, and mentor in classroom settings. This important text gives numerous examples of how teacher educators can become role models and agents for self-regulatory change, and it will be an invaluable resource for courses in education, psychology, and human development.
Barry J. Zimmerman, Professor Emeritus
Graduate Center, The City University of New York
In an effective blend of theory and case histories, Bembenutty, White, and V lez provide valuable information and advice for prospective teachers and teacher educators. Their focus on help seeking is critical given the array of resources available to overcome early difficulties especially for teachers with significant challenges. Also important is helping them understand the role of delay of gratification in the face of expanding sources of distraction.
Stuart A. Karabenick, Research Professor
University of Michigan
This book builds a really strong case for the importance of self-regulation in teacher education. Moreover, it tells a fascinating story of educational success against the odds, made possible by personal stamina as well as contextual support. Both teacher students and teacher educators around the world will find this book a wonderful inspiration.
Ivar Br ten, Professor
University of Oslo, Norway
This is a practical book which provides a compelling narrative with page after page on teacher self-regulatory functioning. I recommend this book for teacher preparation programs, and I will definitely share it with many of my students and colleagues.

Developing the Expertise of Primary and Elementary Classroom Teachers challenges many current assumptions about primary education. Tony Eaude uses international research and the experiences of teachers at different career phases to indicate that primary classroom teachers with a high level of expertise adopt a wide repertoire of strategies and a flexible, reciprocal and intuitive approach to planning, assessment and teaching. He explores why a deep understanding of how young children learn, the ability to create an inclusive environment, relationships of care and trust and teachers who are attuned to children are essential. Eaude argues that to develop qualities such as confidence and resilience, to exercise informed intuition and to create a robust professional identity, many constraints on manifesting expertise, some of which are emotional, some more structural, must be overcome.
Drawing on the research on professional learning, Eaude shows that these abilities and qualities are learned over time, through regular, sustained, contextualised opportunities, relating theory and practice, with the years soon after qualification particularly significant. He highlights that the professional knowledge and judgement required in complex, changing situations is acquired and refined mainly through guided practice and experience backed by reflection and engagement with research. The need for supportive professional learning communities and for policy which encourages primary classroom teachers' enthusiasm, creativity and willingness to innovate is emphasised and an enriched apprenticeship model - using a variety of processes, including observation of other teachers, practice, mentoring, case studies and discussion - is advocated.

Описание: This second edition of the International Handbook of Mathematics Teacher Education builds on and extends the topics/ideas in the first edition while maintaining the themes for each of the volumes. Collectively, the authors looked back beyond and within the last 10 years to establish the state-of-the-art and continuing and new trends in mathematics teacher and mathematics teacher educator education, and looked forward regarding possible avenues for teachers, teacher educators, researchers, and policy makers to consider to enhance and/or further investigate mathematics teacher and teacher educator learning and practice, in particular. The volume editors provide introductions to each volume that highlight the subthemes used to group related chapters, which offer meaningful lenses to see important connections within and across chapters. Readers can also use these subthemes to make connections across the four volumes, which, although presented separately, include topics that have relevance across them since they are all situated in the common focus regarding mathematics teachers.
Volume 4, The Mathematics Teacher Educator as a Developing Professional, focuses on the professionalization of mathematics teacher educators, which, since the first Handbook, continues to grow as an important area for investigation and development. It addresses teacher educators’ knowledge, learning and practice with teachers/instructors of mathematics. Thus, as the fourth volume in the series, it appropriately attends to those who hold central roles in mathematics teacher education to provide an excellent culmination to the handbook.

Описание: Many countries now employ national evaluation systems to demonstrate publicly that universities provide a quality education. However, the current processes of quality evaluation are often detached from the practices of teaching and learning. In particular, those who teach and those who learn still have to be won over to such audit processes. This book argues that it is time for the higher education sector to concern itself with the human dimension so as to develop both academic professionalism and students’ commitment to their learning. Based on five completed research projects, which explore academics’ and students’ experiences and their views of quality evaluation, the book argues that developing the intrinsic values of teaching and learning held by academics and students is key to achieving high quality education. In this book, the author critically reviews the four most frequently used terms related to current quality evaluation: ‘fitness for purpose’, ‘value for money’, ‘student satisfaction’ and ‘students-as-customers’, and argues for a motivationally intelligent quality approach, emphasising the moral dimension and the intrinsic values of academics and students. The author also outlines an improved quality evaluation system that encourages and increases academics’ and students’ commitment to teaching and learning.

Описание: The goal of AMTE Monograph 4, "Cases in Mathematics Teacher Education: Tools for Developing Knowledge Needed for Teaching", is to provide detailed accounts of case use that will inform the mathematics teacher education community on the range of ways in which cases can be used to foster teacher learning and the capacity to reflect on and learn from teaching. The chapters in this monograph describe the use of cases with preservice and practicing teachers at all levels K - 12, in content and methods courses as well as professional development settings, and focus on developing various aspects of teachers' knowledge base (i.e., content, pedagogy, and students as learners). Hence, Monograph 4 should prove to be a superb resource for mathematics teacher educators.

Описание: This collection centres the diverse narrative experiences of six early-career US teachers who identify as critically reflective practitioners. The contributors cogently demonstrate how teachers with critically reflective mindsets take active steps to ensure that they are cognizant of how their intersecting social identities impact how they arrive at making different types of decisions (big and small), interact with students from varied backgrounds, and negotiate competing demands and expectations in and out of their classrooms. The contributors have carefully thought about how learning and teaching are complex processes that involve significant ethical, moral, and social responsibilities. While they do not offer easy answers to the complex challenges that teachers negotiate on a daily basis, their willingness to share their concerns, experiences, and lesson learned offer timely perspectives about the possibilities and promise of using critical reflection as a means to challenge and close persistent academic, equity, and opportunity gaps that disproportionately and persistently impact students from underserved populations. The editors offer strategies for developing and supporting critically reflective teachers with a focus on transforming PK-12 and teacher education through an equity-centric lens. They contend that aspiring and earlier-career teachers greatly benefit from employing critical reflection in their daily lives to not only survive but to also thrive in an increasingly complex sociopolitical climate. Additional resources and guiding questions are included with specific foci on teacher educators and other major decision-makers in PK-12 education who are directly involved with the education, professional development, and socialization of early-career teachers.
