A storybook about special needs siblings to engage the whole family My daughter, Jordhan, has the unique position of not only being a middle child, but a middle child among siblings with special needs. This story touches on the important contributions Jordhan makes to our family, especially on the days when she doesn't think so. We need more stories for siblings of special needs children. This is my gift to each of them to show how much we appreciate their very important role in the family. In the book, I have outlined activities that siblings can do on their own, or with parents and/or siblings. To make the most of the message given in the book, as well as from the activities provided, it is my hope that siblings and family members will:
Have a tool that will help make siblings of special needs children more visible in the family unit;
Give a voice to siblings that represents how real their feelings and concerns are, even when they aren't always able verbalize those things;
Help to provide a greater level of understanding by strengthening communication, patience and respect among family members;
Show that there is so much more than the labels these families are given and offer some insight into how they can learn to advocate for their children; and
Remember that each of us brings something beautiful and unique with us into the world that we can learn from, and teach others about. And that's so powerful.
"When you are a sibling of a child with special needs, especially one whose life can be dictated by sensory issues from their environment, you often learn to "live in the moment." In this validating family book, Mia's feelings are explored. Often siblings have to sacrifice or alter their day because of the needs of their brother or sister --whether it be leaving a fun activity to go to therapy or dealing with a meltdown that affects the whole family. Don't Rush Me explores these situations in a way that teaches siblings that their way-too-familiar rollercoaster of feelings is normal and that they are not alone in them." --Diane M. Renna, author of Meghan's World: The Story of One Girl's Triumph Over SPD
"Using colorful illustrations to deliver her message and spot-on dialogue, any parent or child can identify with the situations Chynna Laird presents. Written from the perspective of a typical child, one understands the patience and assistance she willingly offers to her siblings with sensory processing difficulties. This is a sweet, lovely book that cheers family relationships and accepts individual differences in others." --Laurie Zelinger, PhD, ABPP, RPT-S, Board Certified Psychologist, author of Please Explain "Terrorism" to Me

"In telling her own true story in Real Belonging, Lynn Price masterfully weaves in lessons to benefit all youth and families involved in foster care, and even those that are not. Lynn tells stories showing the twists, triumphs, setbacks, myths and facts of the journey through the system, and in doing so, proves that nothing in a child's life can compare to the sibling bond. Those in the social services including caseworkers, foster, adoptive and kindship providers will find great insights in this book. And most importantly, kids and foster families--every family--will find hope."
- LeAnn Thieman, Co-author of Chicken Soup for the Caregiver's Soul
"It's no secret that our most sacred institutions have been rocked to the core and it has adversely affected our nation's youth. But in this book, Lynn Price demonstrates that we all still need to belong to something bigger than ourselves and she shows how we can make others feel as if they do belong and they really do matter. This is a must read for anyone who has kids, likes kids, or is a kid at heart."
- Eric Chester, award-winning speaker and bestselling author
"As a foster child, not only was Lynn able to reunite my sister and me with my brothers (who lived with our aunt) for an amazing week at camp each year, she also taught me there were no limitations no matter who you were. She made it OK to be a foster child and let foster children know they're not alone. Read this book so your life is changed as much as mine was."
- Amber, former Camper
"It is because of Lynn and her passion for the sibling bond that allows me to have a relationship with my brother. It is because of Camp that I had someone to walk me down the aisle when I got married. Someone to share pictures of my son with when he was born. Someone for my son to call uncle. Many people take their siblings for granted, but for my brother and me, we are the only stability that we have had through the rough patches in life and we wouldn't be able to say that, or share any experiences like we have, without Lynn taking her hardship and making it something to help others."
Thirteen siblings were held captive in their own home--and lived to tell their story.
On January 14, 2018, a seventeen-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 on a borrowed cell phone. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her twelve siblings--ranging in age from two to twenty-nine--were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. "I've never been out," she stammered. She wasn't even sure how to spell her own last name. Louise and David Turpin presented themselves as loving, faithful parents. On social media they shared snapshots of family outings and vacations, often with their children in matching outfits. But what police discovered when they entered the Turpin home would eclipse the most shocking child abuse cases in history. For years, Louise and David had kept their children in increasing isolation, trapping them in a sinister world of torture, fear, and near starvation. New York Times bestselling author John Glatt's The Family Next Door is the definitive, devastating, and unforgettable account of the Turpins: a family whose dark secrets would shock and captivate the world. "Thoroughly researched and thoroughly disturbing." --Booklist"Unflinching...this chilling portrayal of abuse and secrecy may leave readers looking differently at their neighbors."--Publishers Weekly
From New York Times bestselling true crime author John Glatt comes the devastating story of the Turpins: a seemingly normal family whose dark secrets would shock and captivate the world.
On January 14, 2018, a seventeen-year-old girl climbed out of the window of her Perris, California home and dialed 911 with shaking fingers. Struggling to stay calm, she told the operator that she and her 12 siblings--ranging in age from 2 to 29--were being abused by their parents. When the dispatcher asked for her address, the girl hesitated. "I've never been out," she stammered.
To their family, neighbors, and online friends, Louise and David Turpin presented a picture of domestic bliss: dressing their thirteen children in matching outfits and buying them expensive gifts. But what police discovered when they entered the Turpin family home would eclipse the most shocking child abuse cases in history. For years, David and Louise had kept their children in increasing isolation, trapping them in a sinister world of torture, abuse, and near starvation.
In the first major account of the case, investigative journalist and author John Glatt delves into the disturbing details and recounts the bravery of the thirteen siblings in the face of unimaginable horror.
