It is nearly five times as long as its predecessor and the writing style is pitched at a more mature audience. The scope of the novel is vast; it is divided into six parts and the illustrations are also more sophisticated. It won the Newbery Medal for 1923. It was one of the novels in the series that was adapted into the film Doctor Dolittle.
The novel begins when Tommy Stubbins, the narrator of the story, finds a squirrel injured by a hawk. Matthew Mugg, the cat's meat man, informs him to get help from Doctor Dolittle, who can speak the language of animals. The Doctor is away on a voyage, but when he returns, he attends to the squirrel. Tommy is introduced to some of the strange animals in Dolittle's care, such as the Wiff-Waff fish, and those who care for his household, such as Dab-Dab the duck, and Jip the dog.Polynesia the parrot arrives in Puddleby from Africa informs the Doctor that Bumpo is studying in Bullford. Tommy begins his studies with Doolittle, or rather with Polynesia who teaches Tommy the language of animals. Chee-Chee comes from Africa disguised as a lady and tells about his voyage to Puddleby. The Doctor acquires The Curlew and is thinking of taking Tommy, Polynesia, and Luke the Hermit. They find out from the hermit's dog, Bob, that he was sent to prison for murder but Bob is a witness so when the court is in the process the Doctor proves to the judge that he can talk to animals when this is settled he translates Bob's story to English. When the story is finished the judges conclude that the hermit is innocent.

One day he got acquainted with Doctor Dolittle, and after that his dreams began to come true; for that kindly little man promised to teach him all he knew about animals and their languages, and to take him along on his next voyage of discovery. They decided where to go by opening the atlas with their eyes shut and touching the page with a pencil.
All in all it was perhaps the most amazing voyage that has ever been heard of. The excitement began with four stowaways (one of them the cat's-meat-man ); then came the Doctor's discovery of the key to the language of the shellfish, through his meeting with a Fidgit. After that, events crowd thick and fast: the stop at a Spanish island where the Doctor creates a sensation as matador at a bullfight: the shipwreck; the landing on a Floating Island; and all the adventures there till the Doctor is crowned king by the devoted natives and has to be got away home to Puddleby by stealth.
The Voyages of Doctor Dolittle is three or four times as long as The Story of Doctor Dolittle and, therefore, three or four times as funny. Most writers would never have been able to "do it again" after writing such a book as the first one; but Mr. Lofting's second book is even more delightful than the first.

Doctor Dolittle was a little, lovable old doctor who had so many animal pets about his place that his patients would not come to see him anymore. So he became the animals' own doctor, and his fame spread far and wide among them. A call came from the monkeys in Africa who were suffering from an epidemic, and the doctor went to their aid.
Doctor Dolittle and his pets had wonderful adventures in Africa. In return for his services he was presented with a new pet, the Pushme-Pullyu, which has two heads so that it can talk and eat at the same time without being impolite. There never was quite such another little old doctor--his story will charm grownups as well as children, and the author's delightfully humorous illustrations add the finishing touch to the volume.
