It can take us to the throne of God, it can connect us to the stream of infinity and allow us to see the universe for what it really is. Controlled use of the imagination is fundamental to magical practice, and this comprehensive study by an experienced practitioner provides the keys to understanding and using these powerful inner techniques. Based on Nick Farrell's previous book Magical Pathworking, this greatly revised and expanded edition includes new chapters which further develop the techniques of pathworking for magical and spiritual purposes. It covers group work, divination, visiting other inner world dimensions and working towards what Farrell calls objective pathworking. "Even if you think you know all about visualisation, pathworking and the magical key of imagination - even if you teach the subjects - this book will astound you. Nick Farrell explores magical imagination with depth and discernment, revealing principles and methods that will enrich and transform your magical and spiritual practice. Quite simply, this book is the best of its kind and extends the magical use of imagination to new heights and insights. It is an essential book for all magicians, Pagans and anyone who works with the inner realms." - Peregrin Wildoak, author of By Names and Images.

The emotions pose many philosophical questions. We don't choose them; they come over us spontaneously. Sometimes emotions seem to get it wrong: we experience wrongdoing but do not feel anger, feel fear but recognise there is no danger. Yet often we expect emotions to be reasonable, intelligible and appropriate responses to certain situations. How do we explain these apparent contradictions?
Emotion, Imagination, and the Limits of Reason presents a bold new picture of the emotions that challenges prevailing philosophical orthodoxy. Talia Morag argues that too much emphasis has been placed on the reasonableness of emotions and far too little on two neglected areas: the imagination and the unconscious. She uses these to propose a new philosophical and psychoanalytic conception of the emotions that challenges the perceived rationality of emotions; views the emotions as fundamental to determining one's self-image; and bases therapy on the ability to listen to one's emotional episode as it occurs.
Emotion, Imagination, and the Limits of Reason is one of the first books to connect philosophical research on the emotions to psychoanalysis. It will be essential reading for those studying ethics, the emotions, moral psychology and philosophy of psychology as well as those interested in psychoanalysis.

Ralph Metzner first wrote about alchemy when he was in his early 30s. He included a chapter on alchemy in his book Maps of Consciousness, which was published in 1971. As a professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, he taught a course titled "Alchemy and Depth Psychology," as part of the East-West Psychology Program. The study of alchemy was also a part of a course he taught on esoteric systems of thought. I was a student in his alchemy class in the summer of 1983, as well as of the esoteric systems course during the academic year. In the 1990s he wrote about a process he called Alchemical Divination, and developed that into a training program which he taught for more than a decade in the early 2000s. In the latter few years of his life he recorded his thoughts on some 36 alchemical terms. Over an arc of some 50 years, Ralph worked on the practice of using alchemical processes for inner transformation. This volume of alchemical musings combines his earliest writing on alchemy with his last writings on alchemical terms.
The history of alchemy is intimately connected with the history of the so-called secret societies of the European Middle Ages. The secrecy of these groups was in part a political survival necessity. Their teachings, which involved liberation from false concepts and preprogrammed designs, if openly declared, would have aroused the opposition of the established church. In part, also, the need for secrecy is inherent in the nature of the work of schools of inner transformation. It is the secrecy of a technical language, not the secrecy of an attempt to gain political or commercial advantage, although this was precisely the accusation leveled against them.
The secrecy factor makes it difficult to reconstruct the history of these psychological schools with any accuracy, especially since much of the information about them derives from the defamatory distortions of the churchly opposition. It seems reasonably certain though that throughout that period when Europe was dominated by the power of the church these schools of psychological transformation continued to arise. To what extent there was an unbroken continuity of tradition, reappearing in different guises, and to what extent new teachings were formulated in concepts derived from ancient, semi-mythical sources in order to facilitate their acceptance, is difficult to say. The alchemists and other groups tended to emphasize that their teaching was the same as that taught by the "ancient sages" the first teacher was always Hermes Trismegistos, an Egyptian initiate, whom Egyptians identified with Thoth, the scribe of the gods, and the Greeks identified with Hermes, the messenger of the gods. Numerous works of anonymous medieval Latin alchemists were simply attributed to Hermes. Other ancients, whom the alchemists cited as initiates in their tradition, include Solomon, Pythagoras, Socrates, Plato, and Anaxagoras; and among medievalists, Avicenna, Albertus Magnus, Roger Bacon, Raymond Lully, and others.
The commonly accepted view of alchemy among contemporary scientists is that though their researchers had the merit of paving the way for the development of modern chemistry, yet they were regrettably steeped in the useless and superstitious quest to make gold. This despite the repeated and insistent statements of the alchemists that aurum nostrum non est aurum vulgum, "our gold is not the common gold," and that "our" mercury is not the common mercury.
An anonymous author of "An Open Entrance to the CLosed Palace of the King writes: "You must understand . . . that I have spoken metaphorically; if you take my words literally you will reap no harvest."

We don't know where creativity comes from. Is it inspired from above? Welling up from below? Picked up from the air?
"Creativity is a mystery wherever you encounter it..." (Rupert Sheldrake).
This book does not claim to reveal this secret. It does not attempt to reduce creativity to a "nothing but," for example to explain it as a special ability of certain creative individuals with special abilities. On the contrary, it is about exploring the fullness and variety of this amazing power, which is the basis of all cultural, artistic, scientific and spiritual activity of man, without attributing it to a simple cause.
The creative imagination is unlimited in its richness of design. At the same time, however, there is a canon of basic forms of creative experience and creative ideas. In other words, creative design is infinitely complex in its respective contents and at the same time follows a limited formal grammar.
To work out the basic forms of this grammar of creativity, this book examines 25 selected works by artists in detail. The guiding idea here is that artists often consciously or unconsciously address the riddle of their creative drive in their works, especially in their self-portraits. Artists are empiricists and experts in the creative process. All their work is shaped by the experience of being stimulated and guided by creative imagination.
Their depiction of this enigmatic creative factor, from which their self-understanding and their creative perspective are derived, thus allows us to sketch, as it were, a general phenomenology of creative expression. In other words, the works of painters show in a both vivid and empirically evidenced way how creativity is basically experienced and in which forms it is expressed and realized.
In order to be able to recognize pictures by artists in this sense as statements about the essence of creativity, they must be understood as symbolic reality, in which the riddle of creativity itself, which is at work in painting, is expressed in the form of a picture. The artist usually does not himself address this reflection on artistic creation in an explicit form. This would be questionable and in the best case lead only to an allegorical paraphrase of the phenomenon of art. Real statements about the essence of the creative are possible, however, if creativity itself is expressed in a pictorially symbolic form, i.e. if the artist does not try intentionally to illustrate his opinion about creativity, but if he allows the creative gestalt itself to appear as such.
This book presents art as something that invites symbolic understanding. In this way, art appears not only as an aesthetic experience, but also as a deep symbolic discovery, in which rich psychological knowledge can be found.

Автор: Lois Oppenheim Название: Imagination from Fantasy to Delusion ISBN: 0415875706 ISBN-13(EAN): 9780415875707 Издательство: Taylor&Francis Рейтинг: Цена: 137810.00 T Наличие на складе: Невозможна поставка. Описание: In Imagination from Fantasy to Delusion, Lois Oppenheim illustrates the enhancement of self that creativity affords, the relationship of imagination to the self as agent. The premise of this book is twofold: First, that the imaginary is real. Where it differs from what we commonly take to be reality is in structure and in form. The imaginary of art, for example, is not illusionary for it is phenomenologically describable and even depictable, as demonstrated by the self-reflexive efforts of modernist painters and writers. No less real than the imaginary of art, and thus fantasy, is the imaginary of delusion, ascertainable in the very function it serves. Though fundamentally different, fantasy and delusion do share a significant feature: a preoccupation with agency. Second is that change, the enhancement of self through an increase in agency, is facilitated by the biology of reward: The pleasure of increased self-cohesion—the efficacy acquired through knowledge of, and the attribution of meaning to, the world—is ultimately the sine qua non of imaginative thought. Oppenheim emphasizes the idea that imagination generates knowledge. Our sensory systems, like our higher cognitive functions, give the human brain knowledge to maintain the homeostatic balance required for survival and to enrich the sense of self required for agency. And, she suggests, imagination is a function of their doing so. Moreover, she explores the construct by which we apprehend the workings of imagination—fantasy—and considers in what the mental imagery that endows it consists, how fantasy may be transmitted transgenerationally, and how delusion can be an impediment to imagination while also being a product of it. Additionally, she likens psychoanalysis to the making of art as a process of acquiring knowledge and looks at creativity itself as a coming-to-know. Throughout this book, there run several opposing threads. The first is that of the intra- and interpsychic psychoanalytic paradigms. This theoretical contrast bears on our understanding of aesthetic experience as sublimatory versus object relational and on our understanding of the construction of meaning. A second opposition resides in the notion of agency (with its implication of self-cohesion) which has everything to do with ego function and, seemingly, the usefulness of "unconscious fantasy," a cornerstone of psychoanalysis now thrown into question by the postmodern favoring of dissociation over repression and other mechanisms of defense. Last, but no less significant, is the contrast interwoven between the empiricism of neuroscience and the metaphysics of philosophical thought. Oppenheim's underlying effort is to explore the validity of these oppositions, which seem not to hold as steadfastly as we tend to suppose.
