Ein wichtiger Forschungsbereich ist das Information Retrieval, verstanden als Wissenschaft der Suchmaschinen und ihrer Nutzer. Themen der Wissensreprasentation umfassen Metadaten und Methoden bzw. Werkzeuge der Wissensorganisation (Folksonomies, Nomenklaturen, Klassifikationssysteme, Thesauri und Ontologien). Informetrie ist empirische Informationswissenschaft und behandelt u. a. domainspezifische Metriken (etwa Szientometrie, Webometrie oder Patentstatistik), Nutzer- und Nutzungsforschung sowie die Evaluation von Informationssystemen. Wissensmanagement befasst sich mit dem Teilen und Verteilen internen wie externen Wissens in Organisationen. Der Informationsmarkt wird uber den Austausch digitaler Informationen auf Netzwerken, besonders dem World Wide Web, definiert. Weitere interessante informationswissenschaftliche Forschungsgebiete sind Informationsethik, Informationsrecht, Informationssoziologie und Informationspolitik.
